Safety Spotlight: Preventing Ergonomic Injuries

Identifying the hazards in your workplace is the first step to preventing injuries. After supervisors discuss and identify hazards with workers, controls can be put in place to reduce those hazards.

Following the Hierarchy of Controls can help your worksite reduce risks associated with any hazard. For example, ergonomic injuries like strains and sprains can be avoided at a worksite that requires tasks involving heavy lifting by using the Hierarchy of Controls. See if you can:

  • Eliminate tasks from your workflow that require lifting heavy items?
  • If not, can you:
  • Substitute any items that are too heavy to lift safely for similar, lighter items?
  • If not, can you:
  • Install engineered controls such as a cart or a mechanical hoist to assist with lifting heavy loads?
  • If not, can you:
  • Implement administrative controls such as limiting how many heavy lifts a worker can do in one day?
  • If not, can you:
  • Identify personal protective equipment (PPE) that could help reduce the hazard, such as shock-absorbing footwear, or gloves with grips to make lifting easier?

Young Worker Certificate Course

Statistics show that workers under the age of 25 are at a higher risk for workplace injuries. While it’s vital to provide site-specific safety training to all workers, keep in mind that young and new workers may have no knowledge of occupational health and safety.

Have your young workers complete the WSCC’s free Young Worker Certificate Course to learn the basics of workplace safety topics and worker rights! The course takes about 2 hours to complete and is available in English, French, and Inuktitut. When successfully completed, students also get a certificate which is a great addition to their resume.

Wildfire Smoke: New Resource

As wildfire season approaches, the WSCC has prepared resources that can help to address workplace hazards related to wildfires. These resources will assist employers to identify and communicate potential hazards to workers.

Our latest resource is a Toolbox Talk about Wildfire Smoke exposure. This Toolbox Talk includes general information to help employers and workers identify pathways of exposure to wildfire smoke, potential hazards, and ways to reduce wildfire smoke exposure at any workplace. Please note that this information is not intended for frontline workers such as wildland firefighters or first responders.

The WSCC reminds employers to pay attention to air quality alerts and advice from Public Health or Environmental Health in their respective community.
