Hemlock Semiconductor Breaks Ground on $375 million

The state, through the Michigan Economic Development Corporation approved $37 million for infrastructure improvements in Thomas and Saginaw Charter Township to support a $375 million investment at Hemlock Semiconductor. The company is a global leader in the manufacture of polycrystalline silicon and the largest producer of high purity polysilicon in the United States. Polysilicon is used in several products, including the production of semiconductor chips and solar panels.
 
The investment is expected to create 170 new jobs, according to the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. HSC currently employs 1,350 employees at its headquarters in Thomas TownshipThe next-generation technologies HSC will deploy through the project will increase the purity of the company’s semiconductor-grade polysilicon and improve supply to meet rising global demand. This project is the first phase of planned expansion projects recently announced by HSC. The planned projects will take place in phases over the next three years.
Major Indoor Water Park Expansion Planned at Bavarian Inn Lodge
The Bavarian Inn Lodge water park in Frankenmuth is getting a massive expansion.
More than 20 new attractions are planned, including more water slides, a wave pool, and a swim-up bar for adults. When it's done, the indoor water park will be more than 140,000 sq. ft. The $80 million expansion project begins Dec. 13, with plans to open in spring 2024. Some attractions will open in late fall 2023.

"We are truly raising the bar on fun at the Lodge, creating unique attractions and new types of experiences within our resort," said Michael Keller Zehnder, President of the Bavarian Inn Lodge. "This expansion will help us to advance our goal of creating fun and enjoyable experiences for all ages. We are reimagining family fun and see this as an exciting project for all of Frankenmuth."

According to Zehnder, there will be no disruptions to the Family Fun Center, banquet center, hotel rooms, and existing water park amenities.
Investment will Retain 1,100 Jobs in Saginaw County
Nexteer Automotive
Buena Vista Charter Township received Michigan Strategic Fund (MSF) approval of $25.5 million in federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) funds in support of a project for Nexteer Automotive. It will help secure new equipment for the company's world-class manufacturing operations and retain high-quality jobs at the company’s Buena Vista site. Nexteer is a global leading motion control technology. The company is committed to accelerating mobility to be safe, green and exciting.

The CARES funds are vital in ensuring Nexteer retains manufacturing positions, while continuing to make critical investments at the site both now and in the future. The project is expected to generate a total private investment of up to $51 million and retain 1,100 jobs.

In addition to the significant capital investment, Nexteer provides good-paying pathway jobs to its employees, including individuals from geographically disadvantaged areas. The MSF also approved a 15-year State Essential Services Assessment exemption valued at $2,273,225 in support of the project. Buena Vista is supporting the project by serving as the applicant for the CDBG CARES grant.
New Owners for Historic Downtown Saginaw Building
Jefferson One
Owners of Ox Eye Media purchased the Jefferson One building located at 100 S. Jefferson Ave. in Downtown Saginaw for a total investment of nearly $1 million. The six-story office building built in 1931 currently houses WTA Architects, United Way of Saginaw County, READ Association and others. All are expected to remain as tenants. Ox Eye Media, which develops and publishes board games, comic books, television and movies, will also locate its headquarters in the building. Saginaw Future assisted the company with identifying investment opportunities in Riverfront Saginaw.  
Weiss Equipment Expands in the City of Frankenmuth

Weiss Equipment is expanding its footprint in the City of Frankenmuth with a new dual-purpose warehouse and shop. The family-owned and operated company is a provider of outdoor power products, such as off-road vehicles, residential lawn and power equipment and more. The new building will allow the use of overhead cranes to increase process efficiency. The Weiss expansion is expected to result in an investment of $2.5 million and the creation of two to three jobs.

SFI assisted the project by convening a meeting with Frankenmuth leaders, Michigan Economic Development Corporation and Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. Consumers Energy was also inolved to ensure the level of power is available and conversations with Michigan Department of Transportation on logistics has been initiated. Second Location in the City of Saginaw
Elite Cannabis
Elite Cannabis is opening a second retail location on the corner of N. Mason St. and State St. in the City of Saginaw. Development firm, NH Ventures, is rehabilitating a former 7-11 that has been in and out of use for many years. The project will renovate and upgrade the building at 2030 N. Mason St.

Plans call for an overall improvement of the site and provide storm water remediation for an investment of approximately $3 million. Fifteen new jobs are expected to be created. Saginaw Future assisted the project through the planning and zoning process.
PTAC Success and Rebrand

Saginaw Future Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) assists businesses in identifying and securing government contracts. In the second quarter, the PTAC assisted 28 regional companies that won 166 government contracts valued at nearly $8 million.

The federal government is a multibillion-dollar purchaser of goods and services. States and local governments are also major purchasers of products and services. To ensure that Saginaw County businesses have access to these contracts, the Region 5 PTAC was created. The organization is a sub-center of the Northwest Michigan PTAC and services Saginaw, Arenac, Bay, Clare, Isabella, Gladwin, Gratiot and Midland Counties. Housed at Saginaw Future offices, the PTAC can help you understand and take advantage of government contracting opportunities. By expanding your market, your firm will become more diversified and strengthen your customer base. The Saginaw Future PTAC provides NO FEE assistance to businesses that are interested in tapping into this market.

On October 1, 2022, the Procurement Technical Assistance Program (PTAP) and Procurement Technical Assistance Centers (PTACs) transitioned from the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) to the Office of Small Business Programs. This move will allow the Department to integrate these centers into broader industry engagement activities and leverage them to provide support to suppliers looking to do business with the Department and other federal agencies. The PTACs have also been rebranded as APEX Accelerators. The Department’s APEX Accelerators are located in fifty states, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, Guam, and U.S. Virgin Islands and have ninety-six locations. These Accelerators will keep helping American businesses pursue contracts with federal, state, and local governments by assisting with various registration and eligibility requirements, identification of contract opportunities, preparation for applications and submission of bids.

Rafael Turner
Rafael Turner is a Community Affairs Manager for Consumers Energy, Michigan’s largest energy provider. He proudly serves Genesee, Saginaw and Shiawassee Counties, ensuring his friends and neighbors receive the hometown service Consumers Energy aims to provide. Turner currently works from the Flint Service Center.
He is a dedicated professional with over 20 years of experience working in philanthropy, business, and government affairs.

Turner served as Program Officer for the Ruth Mott Foundation and Manger of Government Relations and Community Outreach for the Flint & Genesee Chamber of Commerce. He currently serves on the Workforce Development Board for GST Michigan Works and the Board of Directors for the Shiawassee Economic Development Partnership. Turner also sits on the Board of Trustees for the Community Foundation of Greater Flint and the Foundation for Mott Community College. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Communications and Media Studies from Eastern Michigan University and a Master of Public Administration from the University of Michigan.

Saginaw Future Inc. has been reaccredited by the International Economic Developers Council (IEDC) for the third time. The Accredited Economic Development Organization (AEDO) Program recognizes the professional excellence of economic development organizations (EDOs). The AEDO Program provides EDOs with independent feedback on operations, structure and procedures.

With the AEDO recognition, Saginaw Future is part of an elite network of EDOs who have gone through the accreditation process. The IEDC has over 5,000 members and only 71 are accredited. The AEDO status recognizes Saginaw Future as a leading authority on economic-related issues.
