Improvements to TheDow Event Center | The Saginaw County Board of Commissioners recenlty hosted a Business After Hours and ribbon cutting to show off all the hard work that went into TheDow Event Center this season. Attendees received an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at suites, locker rooms and much more. Saginaw County and TheDow will soon be hosting the Memorial Cup and significant upgrades were done to the facility to prepare for this event that will also serve our community for years to come. | | | |

Redevelopment Project in Old Town Saginaw
Shaheen Development is redeveloping 122 S. Hamilton St. in Old Town Saginaw, which will transform the obsolete property into a retail and professional office space. The site consists of a three-story, 10,935 square foot vacant building constructed in 1864 with a total budget of $1.7 million. When complete, the first floor will be occupied by the Michigan Cream & Sugar Ice Cream Company, a local, hand-crafted, high-quality ice cream manufacturer and seller. The company purchases milk from family-owned dairy farmers in the Great Lakes Bay Region and locally sourced Pioneer sugar from the Michigan Sugar Company, a grower-owned cooperative. The third floor will be transformed from an attic style storage area to office space for an accounting firm that provides assurance, consulting, and tax services to a variety of industries.

New Investment for Freeland Bean and Grain | The Freeland Bean and Grain (FB&G) project involves demolishing an obsolete structure and replacing it with a new building that will be 2,560 square feet. The new facility will be used for bagging, palletizing, storage, and loadout of black edible beans for export. Combining operations into one space will improve efficiency. The capital investment for this project is $855,401 and will retain 14 jobs. SFI assisted FB&G and the community with an eight-year PA 198 real property tax abatement for new construction and real property improvements. | | |
New Facade Coming for Rita's Cafe |
Rita’s Southern Soul Cafe is located at 110 N. Washington Ave. in Downtown Saginaw. Rita’s will be replacing all front-facing windows and doors including the boarded windows on the second story. The Saginaw Downtown Development Authority supported this project with a $5,000 façade grant. The overall $25,000 investment will improve the building’s facade and support Downtown Saginaw’s main commercial corridor.

Discount Auto Body Purchases New Equipment | |
Discount Auto Body is purchasing additional equipment to provide contracted services in house. This will allow Discount Auto to make the necessary vehicular repairs on site at 1316 E. Genesee Ave. in the City of Saginaw. Discount aims to be a full-service auto body collision shop and SFI assisted the company with securing a Saginaw Economic Development Corporation loan. The project will result in a total investment of $190,000, create one job, and completely rehabilitate a blighted corner on the E. Genesee Corridor.

Greater Capacity for Clearbrooke Technologies | |
Clearbrooke Technologies services include toll blending, bottling and private labeling, as well as industrial processing. Clearbrooke is investing in a high-capacity tube filling machine with mixing tanks and added equipment, including a digital scale for production equipment. The company currently operates a packaging machine purchased second hand during the pandemic when there were delays in purchasing new machinery. Clearbrooke is purchasing an added store feeder for the machine. Without the feeder, output is limited to 30% capacity. This overall investment will allow Clearbrooke to operate at full capacity while eliminating waste and reducing cost. The investment will retain two jobs and create two new jobs. The total investment is $550,000. SFI assisted Clearbrooke with application to an Industry 4.0 grant.

After a thrilling decade of innovation and teamwork, Hemlock's Gray Matter Team #5712 has risen to the top, clinching the title of State Champions in the FIRST Robotics Competition. Celebrating their 10th anniversary in the competition, this monumental achievement highlights the team's dedication and skill. The team competed at the FIRST Robotics Michigan State Championship at Saginaw Valley State University recently with 160 teams from around the state.

Saginaw County Small Business Award Winners | Michigan Celebrates Small Business recognizes small businesses in all industries whose growth supports Michigan’s economy. Saginaw Charter Township’s Sandlot Apparel Decorating was selected as One of Michigan 50 Companies to Watch. Sandlot Sports offers screen printing, embroidery, promotional products, team sportswear and equipment, along with custom online stores. VA RE Development, LLC with its Veterans Administration building project, also located in Saginaw Charter Township, received the APEX Accelerator (government contracting) for Best Small Business. | |
Saginaw Metro Area Ranks 3rd for New Projects in 2023 | |
Site Selection Magazine recently announced its 2023 tier 3 top metros by projects with a population over 50,000 but under 200,000. The Saginaw Metro Area tied for third place with 11 qualifying projects that include a minimum investment of $1 million, creating 20 or more new jobs and 20,000 sq. ft. or more of new space. | |

Umbra Group Receives Industry 4.0 Grant | |
The Great Lakes Bay Manufacturers Association (GLBMA) is administering the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) Industry 4.0 Implementation Grants for the for Prosperity Regions 5 and 6. Industry 4.0 is the Fourth Industrial Revolution, which involves the digitization of the manufacturing process. Umbra Group, located in the City of Saginaw, received a $5,000 grant for a 3D printer used for testing and prototypes. Click here for more information on the grant process. | |
New Concession Building & Amenities at the Zoo | |
The Saginaw Children's Zoo held a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate a new concession building. The new features include the Harvey Randall Wickes Foundation Family Comfort Center, Train Whistle Café, Train Plaza, and Carolyn R. Otto Memorial Comfort Center. The Zoo also added a train sculpture that children can climb on, and families can use it as a photo opportunity. The second train was purchased years ago, and components were used to bring handicap accessibility to the original train ride at the zoo. | |
