In the 1st quarter of 2019, Saginaw Future Inc. (SFI) directly assisted eight projects resulting in nearly $66 million in new investment that is expected to create and retain 299 jobs. In addition, 14 regional companies won 75 government contracts valued at more than $64 million.
Morley Companies, Inc. continues its growth, adding more than 200 jobs in Saginaw County in the first half of 2019. For job opps, see The 156-year-old business is adding a fifth office in Saginaw with its expansion to be located within the Horizons Center. The additional office means approximately $1 million in capital investments. Morley is one of the largest employers in Saginaw County, with more than 2,800 associates in its offices in Saginaw, Detroit, Grand Blanc, South Carolina, California, Connecticut, and Florida. The new positions are in customer service, case management, and process support, and anyone with experience in banking and general accounting or a legal background is a plus, but not required. Michigan Premier Laundry  was founded in 1969 to consolidate and standardize services between Ascension St. Mary’s Hospital, HealthSource Saginaw, Covenant HealthCare, Ascension St. Joseph Hospital, and McLaren Bay Region.  Michigan Premier Laundry (MPL) has expanded to provide sanitary, state-of-the-art health care laundry services to the aforementioned hospitals, eleven affiliate hospitals and 89 clinics throughout the State of Michigan. MPL ships between 55,000 and 65,000 pounds of health care laundry each day. The company is currently constructing a 21,000 sq. ft. addition at 1321 Cumberland St. in the City of Saginaw. A $4.6 million investment in the project will result in the creation of 30 new jobs. In all, MPL has processed and shipped nearly 400 million pounds of linen in its 44-year history.  For job opps, see http://www.mplmi.com/index.php/contact-us.html
ASCENSION ST. MARY’S HOSPITAL in Saginaw has begun a multi-million dollar project to update its emergency room and clinical programs. As one of the leading non-profit and Catholic health systems in the U.S., Ascension, recently invested $50 million in St. Mary’s Hospital in Saginaw, Ascension Standish and St. Joseph Hospital in Tawas to ensure they meet evolving health care needs. The health system also completed a rebranding campaign.
Hausbeck Pickle Company announced a 100,000 sq. ft. expansion that will begin this summer. The company expects to invest $6 million and hire 10 new full-time workers and 100 seasonal employees. Hausbeck is a family owned business that was founded in 1923. It is a major supplier to Burger King, Taco Bell and Subway. For job opps, see https://hausbeck.com/join-the-hausbeck-family
Mustard Seed Shelter is a non-profit, women’s shelter serving Saginaw Residents.  A one-story, 3556 sq. ft. addition is being built, which will double capacity. The expansion will house ten guest rooms, two staff guest rooms, a kitchen, conference room, office, living room and bathrooms. The organization will retain the existing five employees and plans to hire two additional staff members.
Woodley/Michigan Photo bldg. is being transformed into a mixed use development by LaMarr and Jordan Woodley.  Once complete the historic building will contain 27 market rate residential apartments and first floor retail space. The nearly $3 million Downtown Saginaw development is positioned directly across the street from the new Delta College Saginaw Center projected to open during third quarter 2019.
AHB Tooling & Machinery, Inc. announced two senior team members purchased the metal working distributor and all 46 employees were retained and two jobs were created. AHB invested $55,000 in software and furnishings for its new Kochville Township location. SFI partnered with Great Lakes Bay Michigan Works! to secure job training funds and a $2,500 grant from the Michigan Defense Center.
Wineman Technologies Inc. invested nearly $150,000 in building improvements, new servers and advancing its computer network. The purchases will improve the capabilities of Wineman to handle larger and more complicated projects. SFI partnered with the MEDC to secure a STEP grant and the PTAC also assisted the company with its recertification as a Service Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business.
Saginaw Future PTAC assisted 14 regional companies attain 75 government contracts in the first quarter worth nearly $65 million. Impacted industries include defense, medical device manufacturing and site remediation. The SFI Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) provides free assistance to companies interested in federal, state and local government contracts.
Saginaw Downtown Development Authority has purchased flower planters for Downtown and Old Town.   They will be placed at primary intersections in both areas around Memorial Day. A microgrant from EMCOG’s Prosperity Region 5 will be used to purchase and install temporary wayfinding signage in Riverfront Saginaw. There will be 54 signs at 25 locations directing visitors that eventually may lead to permanent signs.
Dixie Highway from I-75 through Airport Road is scheduled for joint repairs, milling and resurfacing. Construction will begin mid-June, to be completed by late August 2019, weather dependent. Work will begin on the outside lanes, with one lane of traffic being maintained in each direction on the inside lanes. There will also be a two week closure to construct the Airport Road intersection. During this closure, the detour route will use Dixie Highway, Portsmouth Road and Roedel Road. Once complete, work will begin on the inside lanes with traffic shifted to the outside lanes. Work on the second phase of this project, Airport Road to Junction Road is currently in design for 2020 construction.
