In the 2nd quarter of 2017, Saginaw Future Inc. (SFI) directly assisted eight projects resulting in nearly $61.7 million in new investment that is expected to create and retain 192 jobs. In addition, eight regional companies won 70 government contracts valued at nearly $5 million.

Saginaw Valley State University College of Business and Management will soon have

a new home as SVSU moves forward with plans for a 40,000 sq. ft. building addition. SVSU’s capital outlay request for $9.8 million in state funding received planning authorization approval in the 2018 fiscal year budget for the State of Michigan. SFI and

the Saginaw County Chamber of Commerce have supported the project and actively encouraged approval of state funding. SVSU plans to construct an addition connected to Curtiss Hall, where faculty offices for the College of Business of Management are currently

located.

Delta College officials announced that they have received construction authorization in the 2018 budget from the State of Michigan that was signed by Governor Rick Snyder in July. Delta's $12.7 million, 35,000 sq. ft. facility will be located at the 300 block of E. Genesee Ave., near N. Franklin St. in the City of Saginaw. SFI has assisted with many development issues related to the project and will continue to work with Delta as the project moves forward. Delta plans to open the campus in August 2019 and selected Spence Brothers to lead the construction efforts of the college’s satellite campus.

Dow HIMS was built in 1964 and a pioneer in silicon-based materials used in health care applications. The Healthcare Industries Materials Site recently renovated and expanded its Thomas Township facility. The company also added production equipment that supports the automation of the silicon rubber process, improving safety and productivity. The total investment was $17.3 million, resulting in 12 new jobs.

Merrill Technologies Group has been awarded a new contract to manufacture and paint high-speed rail car shells and plans to expand its existing operations in the cities of Alma and Saginaw. The project is expected to generate a total investment of $3.75 million and create 102 jobs, which was assisted by a $408,000 Michigan Business Development Program performance-based grant. Michigan was chosen over Indiana.

State & Local Support - Dixie Highway Project is a $4 million reconstruction of

Dixie Highway from Airport Rd. to Junction Rd. SFI has been working with Bridgeport Charter Township and the Saginaw County Road Commission to secure funds. The Bridgeport Downtown Development Authority has committed $400,000, the Saginaw County Road Commission pledged $600,000 and Senator Ken Horn led state efforts to secure $1 million in state matching funds. The team is now working with the East Michigan Council of Governments to apply for a U.S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration grant for the remaining $2 million needed.

Hausbeck Pickle Company was formed in 1923 and is an international supplier of pickles and peppers, processing 50 million pounds of pickles and 42 million pounds of peppers annually. Hausbeck recently built a $150,000 sorting line in the City of Saginaw that sorts, inspects and washes peppers, a process that had been taking place out of state. The company added two production workers to run the line.

Orchid Bridgeport is adding more manufacturing space, which will allow for significant increases in production capabilities while reducing overhead costs, and create up to 10 new jobs. The space use will be similar to current operations of machining, coating and packaging operations. Total investment is expected to be $500,000 with completion targeted for next spring .

US Graphite Inc. hired 11 people , added several pieces of equipment and upgraded its building totaling $500,000. SFI assisted the company with a brownfield plan for its City of Saginaw location. US Graphite was able to capture over a $100,000 in reimbursable expenditures for various improvement projects. The company has been operating for over 100 years and supplies carbon and graphite materials for diverse industries.

Destination Assets Analysis is a tourism master plan that compiled area assets and identified gaps in destination market segments. Saginaw Future and the Saginaw County Chamber of Commerce served on the Steering Committee for the Great Lakes Bay Regional Convention & Visitors Bureau Study. Results and recommendations were shared with regional developers to pursue potential opportunities.

The Saginaw Basin Land Conservancy unveiled the nearly completed, 3-acre , Janet H. Nash Riverfront Preserve, which is located at the corner of Genesee and Niagara streets across from the Saginaw Arts and Sciences Academy.
