This week during Council Workshop, the Council provided consensus for the City Court to move forward with the creation of a Veterans Court. The court, in cooperation with partners, will develop innovative “pre” and “post" adjudicative solutions, as may be appropriate to each case, to achieve the mission of the court - which is to realize sustained accountability and successful reintegration of veterans into the community.
The City Council also received an overview of the Glendale Parks and Recreation master plan. The recommendations are still in draft form. The Council provided robust feedback to staff as they continue the draft process. Soon, residents will be invited to provide input on their vision for our parks.
Council also provided consensus to move forward on a proposed pavement cut ordinance. Occasionally, we find a utility request to trench a street that was just recently repaved. The purpose of this ordinance is to discourage any street cuts that are not emergencies, improve the standards for cut repairs, and to provide mechanisms to help coordinate street pavement plans with all utility partners.
During the regular voting meeting of the Council, a small residential development was approved to move forward. The property is located on 69th Avenue and Paradise Lane, inside Grenada Estates. A few years ago, the Council approved an ordinance to allow new residential housing in the Granada Estates subdivision. Previously, only mobile homes were allowed in the area. The new subdivision will be a gated community with a pool, planned open space, and may contain up to 70 individual one and two story family homes (based on draft renderings provided).
The Council also approved an ordinance allowing for the city to execute ground lease and lease purchase agreements to allow the City to lower the effect of interest rates on the unfunded portion of the City’s public safety retirement system. The authorization is expected to save the city over $100 million over the next 17+ years.
