Judges Sub-Committee Roundtable discussion
A Judges Sub-Committee Roundtable discussion took place on May 1 via Zoom and included the following attendees: Lynne Beal, Bob Duggan, Greg Dargavel, Pat Healy, Joe Jospe, Katie Nicoll, Tom Sitar et Mike Turner.
The conversation focussed on the following four topics:
- CORK – What would we like to see for CORK? Should CORK be aspiring to host more Worlds and other international events? What level judges are desirable for CORK? How can we offer better training opportunities for judges? How can we attract international judges from outside the country and continent? What are the funding challenges for Canadian and foreign judges?
- Adherence to the rules - How big an issue is respect for the rules? How can we encourage better adherence to the rules? When should judges be protesting? Do we follow the classes lead, or do we offer leadership?
- Direct judging - Should the judging community be encouraging events to use direct judging? What are the financial implications for using direct judging effectively?
- Rule changes - What rule changes would judges like to see? Should judges be empowered to disqualify boats without a hearing for some rule breaches? Which ones? RRS 31 was raised as a possibility.
Consensus emerged that the roundtable format was interesting and useful, and we would schedule another session in a few months time.
Input on any of these and other issues is welcome.
