To begin sailing from US ports, two major hurdles had to be cleared. One major hurdle was cleared when Congress approved, and the administration signed, a waiver of the Jones Act (Merchant Marine Act of 1920) enabling non-US flagged ships to sail from one US port to another US port without making a stop in a foreign country. Therefore, the waiver allows round-trip cruises to Alaska out of Seattle starting this summer.
Princess, Holland America, Celebrity and Royal Caribbean among others have announced sail dates for Alaskan cruises. For example, Royal Caribbean’s Serenade departs Seattle on July 19, and its Ovation sails on August 13. Princess announced a sailing on the Majestic departing on July 29. Celebrity’s Summit will begin its itineraries on July 23. These are but a few of the sailings now available to Alaska.
The second major hurdle was cleared when the cruise industry along with the vigorous support from the travel industry prevailed upon the CDC to accept the stringent health and safety protocols established by the cruise industry. Last week, that hurdle was cleared, and Celebrity announced the first cruise out of a US port from Fort Lauderdale on the Edge captained by Kate McCue, the first female captain of a major passenger vessel, beginning on June 26. What an honor!
The specific protocols for each cruise line vary from one another but, in general, 99% of crews will have to be vaccinated, as well as 95% of passengers. A lower percentage of vaccinated passengers will be allowed for cruises with a heavy preponderance of children, but 95% of adults on those cruises must be vaccinated. All initial sailings will be at no more than 40%-50%% capacity. What a great time to enjoy a cruise! And the good news continues with the re-opening of river cruises throughout Europe to Americans who are fully vaccinated. Further, many land tour companies are rapidly making itineraries available to its vaccinated guests.
