SLYC GOLF TOURNAMENT SPONSORSHIP

Our annual Golf Tournament, taking place on Tuesday, August 8 at Wildfire Golf Club, is SOLD OUT! Thanks to all who registered for your incredible support and enthusiasm around this event!

Happily, there's another way you can still participate in this year's event and make an impact — you can become a sponsor!

Our annual Golf Tournament is the SLYC’s main fundraiser. And most of the money raised comes from sponsorship.

What are the funds used for?

  1. To keep our membership and programming costs affordable.
  2. To keep our tennis courts in shape. Court 2 is now the nicest court after resurfacing and widening last year. That costs money. Court 3 and the pickleball court will be resurfaced in the fall.
  3. To keep our sailing club with boats that don’t sink. We have a new coach boat and a few new sailboats, but boats wear out over time.
  4. To keep the community strong. We are lucky to have the SLYC and Juniper Island, and it's pretty unique for Stony to have that. There's no shortage of required maintenance and upgrades to this beautiful sailing and tennis club with such a storied history.

Direct sponsorship is best. And you get to share some of the cost due to tax deductibility options (Canadian residents only), either personally or through your company.

Feel free to use this online form to secure your sponsorship https://forms.gle/RYZuNcHgkLfug6nU6 or contact Bethany Chittick at slycinfo@gmail.com or by phone (705) 772-6716 anytime between 8am-4pm on weekdays.

You are of course welcome to do a sponsorship through your business if that's more efficient for you. Bethany can guide you as needed but the form is similar to ones you used in previous years.

Here’s a look at our sponsorship tiers (signage is optional):

  • Bronze ($500 or more): Signage for your family or business placed at a hole at Wildfire
  • Silver ($1,000 or more): Large signage placed at the front of the Wildfire Clubhouse and beside Court 1 on Juniper Island
  • Gold ($2,500 or more): Large logo signage placed at the front of the tournament and on Juniper Island, as well as generous acknowledgement in the SLYC newsletter

Thank you for your support!

JUNIOR SAILING UPDATE

We’ve wrapped three weeks of sailing and we’ve had our first off lake regatta of the season — this summer is flying by!

Our race team had an amazing showing at Steerers regatta at PCYC on Thursday and Friday last week. SLYC had 18 sailors racing in seven 420s, three Optis and one Laser. Top honours go to Quinn Calder for landing a podium position for third place in the Optimist Green Fleet (total of 43 boats racing). And, Maggie Hertz clinched a top-10 finish with an eighth place overall in the same competitive fleet. Our 420 team had an excellent regatta and we had four boats in the top 25 of a very competitive 61-boat fleet. Top 420 honours go to Pippa Barrett and Tate Ferron, who placed 13th out of 61 boats (and landed three top-10 races in the regatta — very impressive).

The race team continued on to compete in the Four Sisters regatta at PCYC on Saturday and Sunday. Pippa Barrett and Tate Ferron had our best finish, landing an incredible fifth place of 40 boats in the 420 spinnaker fleet. Campbell Calder and Erica Brohman also landed a top-10 finish by securing the eighth spot in the competitive 420 fleet.

Congratulations to all racers on a regatta well sailed! And a big thank you to all parents who drove sailors to and from PCYC, hauled trailers and chaperoned at the ever-famous Green Acres hotel.

Coming up: We have a big week — read carefully so you don’t miss out on any fun this week!

  • House Day: The morning of Thursday, July 27 will be filled with fun races, games and cheers.
  • NOTE: All sailors come to sailing from 9am-12pm (even if you're normally in the afternoon session — then everyone has the afternoon off prior to the banquet later that afternoon). Do your best to wear your house shirts on House Day for team cheers and great photos!
  • NOTE: With so much action on Thursday, parking will likely be an issue. Please boat pool wherever possible, and if you're a staff member, please park at the new docks below Court 2 (and watch for rocks/markers on your way in!)
  • Junior Sailing Banquet: Thursday, July 27 from 5:30-8:30pm ($10 fee for burgers, chips and drinks)
  • PJ Day: Friday, July 28 is Pyjama Day, so come ready to sail, but arrive in your wackiest and/or comfiest PJs!

That’s all for now, and please send any questions to Sydney Rankin at head.instructor.slyc@gmail.com or Dave Anderson at juniorsailingdirector@gmail.com

Take care and happy sailing!

Dave Anderson

Director of Junior Sailing

WEEKEND RACING

Following the great success of Alumni Instructors vs the 2023 Instructors Team Racing, won by the 2023 Instructors, there has been a good turnout of 9-16 boats each weekend for our races.

Light winds have been challenging, but Race Starters Maclean and Rocky Walsworth, with Sophie Green and Taylor Dutton assisting as needed, are doing an excellent job.

The first 420 and Opti Race day was successful, with Peter Dipasquale and Sy Walsworth winning in the 420's, and Thompson Keenan in the Opti’s. In other races, Tam Matthews won the Viamede Cup. On Saturday, the Turner Cups were won by Doug Smith in Flying Scots, Gord Welsh in the ICLA Laser and Jennifer Beatty in the Ackroyd’s. On Sunday, the Ken Slater Memorial Trophy was won by Atticus Kimsa in the ICLA Radial.

Looking ahead to this weekend, the Ryder Cup is on Saturday, July 29 and the fun Cruising race is on Sunday, July 30. The Sunday race starts off the Juniper dock and you sail around Big Island in either direction, choosing any channel/route you wish.

Also please note on your calendars the Laser, 420 and Fleet Race Day will be on Saturday, August 6 (on the holiday weekend). All club members who enjoy sailing have the use of the SLYC sailboats for weekend racing, simply show up at the club at noon any race day and choose your boat for a 1pm start.

See you on the water this weekend!
