Ms. Baranker’s Corner
The Peer Helpers Plus lessons will continue to be taught through the Prevention and Awareness for Total Health (PATH) curriculum during guidance classes twice a month for students in grades PreK–8. Each lesson will center around an essential question. This will provide families with an opportunity to continue the conversation at home and reinforce what your child is learning during guidance.
This month we will focus on: making good choices and how our choices can affect how we think, feel, behave, and even affect our relationships. Choices are decisions you make when you have two or more options. Life is full of experiences and events, some of which can be wonderful, while others can be difficult to handle. However, it is during tough times that we must choose how to react. It is always easier to handle life when everything is going smoothly. We will also discuss how to utilize various coping skills. Coping skills give us the ability to handle ourselves in a manner that will help us control our emotions and feelings even when we can’t control the circumstances. As we continue to practice these skills, we improve our ability to succeed now and in the future.
The word of the month is SELF-RESPECT.
Making good choices for yourself is a way to show self-respect. Before we can determine what self-respect means, we must first understand the meaning of respect. Respect is treating others with kindness. Respect is being kind and considerate to others and valuing them for who they are. Self-respect is being kind to yourself and making the best choices for yourself. Self-respect is taking care of yourself, valuing yourself, and not putting yourself down. We are always with ourselves, so we should love and respect ourselves. Self-respect is not selfish. In order for us to care for others, we must first be healthy ourselves. If we want to be kind and have healthy relationships with others, we must first learn to have self-respect.
Essential Question: How do you make a good choice?
Essential Question: What can you do to help cope with your difficult situation?
