Dear Friends and Supporters of Saint John's:
As many of you already know, a few short weeks ago we announced that our long-time CEO, Michele Steeb, is moving to Lucas, Texas this summer with daughter Brooklynne and husband Jim, who has accepted a new job there. While we are deeply saddened to see her go, we fully support her decision to put her family first, and we are indebted to her for the legacy she leaves behind at Saint John's. The good news is that Michele will continue to consult with us from afar in our pursuit of public and private funding partnerships as we continue to meet the growing needs of women and children struggling with addiction, domestic violence, mental health and homelessness in the Sacramento region.

We've had a busy month here at Saint John's! From this change in leadership to a hugely successful Big Day of Giving campaign, many new client hires and preparations in full swing for our Polo for Change event just around the corner (June 8!), I invite you to peruse all of the details on these and more below! We thank you for your continued support of Saint John's and we look forward to seeing you all at Polo for Change on June 8 in Wilton!

Marc Cawdrey

Big Day of Giving - Goal Shattered!
Hip Hip Hooray to all of our wonderful supporters and community partners for your amazing support on May 2, Sacramento's Big Day of Giving! Our 24-hour fundraising campaign generated $65,508 in support of the up-to-270 women and children we serve, each and every day, at Saint John's!

The herculean effort far surpassed the $37,000 raised via last year's BDOG campaign, and shattered our goal of reaching the $50,000 threshold!   And a special shout out to the 170 attendees of our BDOG Guest Chef Dinner, held on May 2 under the stars at Plates Cafe, which helped to contribute more than $11,000 to our total! Our guests, armed with thumbtacks, enthusiastically purchased and popped multi-colored balloons filled with raffle tickets!

Thanks also to Chef Jay Veregge from The Firehouse Restaurant for the delicious food, to The Outliers for their toe-tapping tunes, to Matchbook Wines for their tasty varietals and to Bloem Décor for their beautiful florals.

Sacramento's workforce just got nine people stronger! Congratulations to
Felicia A.
on her new job as a referral coordinator at All Med Medical (check out our blog on Felicia HERE), to Alexandria J. for being hired as traffic controller with APS Environmental, to Starr S. for her new job in food prep and as a server MacQue's BBQ, to Ashiana C. and Lonnetta E. for being hired to work in donor recruitment for Vitalant, to Jessica V. on her new job as a machine operator for WoodMack, to Aimee F. for being hired at Jersey Mikes, to Erika E. for her new position as an office assistant at the Governor's Office of Emergency Services, and to Traci B. for her new job as a server/cashier at 85 Degree Café and Bakery !

These ladies have all worked very hard on their journeys to confidence and self-sustainability. Real Change is happening at Saint John's, each and every day!

Meet Interim CEO Marc Cawdrey
Marc brought more than 30 years of executive and entrepreneurial experience to Saint John's when he was named COO in 2016. His love of business was kindled early as product planning and development manager for PACCAR International in Bellevue, WA. Marc also served as president of Cawdrey/Rice Advertising, and then founder and chief executive of Brandfusion, one of San Francisco's largest integrated branding companies. After 22 years in the communications business, Marc became co-founder and COO of Laura DuPriest LLC, a specialty cosmetics manufacturing and sales company. He moved to Sacramento in 2007 to join the global e-commerce company SkinStore.com, one of the largest online cosmetics retailers in the U.S., and shortly thereafter began volunteering at Saint John's. The company sold to the HUT group in 2016. Marc and his wife, Sue, live in Fair Oaks and have three children.
Congratulations to our Employee of the Month, Nicholle Cox!
Every month, Saint John's honors an employee for exemplifying one of our seven core values. Nicholle Cox, assistant director of catering at Plates Cafe and Catering, was honored this month for Respect, which means caring for ourselves, being sensitive to others and embracing differences.

"Nicholle puts Saint John's on the top of her priority list from the time she wakes up until the job is complete that day and beyond," comments Plates Culinary Program Director Dwayne Scott. "She embraces difference as her schedule is never the same from week to week. If called in on her day off, she is always willing to come in and help, sacrificing her free time while being sensitive to others, helping reduce their stress levels just by being there. With as many moving parts that go on in a usual day for her, she still manages to tackle a huge work load, remain focused and still manages to keep a smile on her face."

Twenty percent of our staff at Saint John's are former clients of the program. Nicholle is one of them! Congratulations, Nicholle! We are so fortunate to have you on our staff!
