THE WISDOM SCHOOL
Write Around the Corner
SATURDAY, MAY 2, 9 A.M.-NOON
Facilitated by the Rev. Mary Lindberg
How do we write our way into the unknown during times of change in our lives? How can writing alone and with others give us clues about what lies beyond our thresholds, and empower us to take steps forward in faith? This writing workshop offers us the chance to discover wisdom, imagination, and connections to others through the written word. Pastor Mary Lindberg believes in the power of the pen as a spiritual tool. She serves as a Spiritual Director and leads writing groups, particularly with underserved groups, using the supportive Amherst Writers and Artists (AWA) method. Mary has published books for adults and children.
Fee: $29 (includes sales tax now required by the state). Registration is required.

Final Choral Evensong of the Program Year
SUNDAY, MAY 3, 4:30 P.M. in the cathedral nave and livestreamed
Saint Mark's invites one and all to raise their prayers and praises to The Risen One in the brilliant afternoon light of the first Sunday in May. The Evensong Choir will offer "Rejoice in the Lamb" by Benjamin Britten — a cantata which is widely regarded as a masterpiece of 20th century sacred music. It is Britten's musical condensation of a 1,200-line poem by Christopher Smart, a wildly imaginative 18th century English poet. In addition, the choir will sing the Songs of Mary and Simeon (Magnificat and Nunc dimittis) in the dramatic setting composed by Philip W. J. Stopford in 2014 for the choir of St. Anne's Cathedral, Belfast, Ireland. This will be the final monthly offering of Choral Evensong until Sunday, October 4.

Queer Conversations: Chosen Family Gathering & Family Dinner Potluck
SUNDAY, MAY 3, 5:30 P.M. in Leffler House living room
Join us for an evening celebrating the sacred gift of chosen family — the people who have claimed us, held us, and helped us become who we are. We’ll honor the communities of care we intentionally build, share stories of the kin who sustain us, and enjoy a relaxed family dinner potluck together.
All are welcome as we gather for connection, reflection, and a celebration of the families we choose in love. If you’d like, you’re warmly invited to bring a dish to share, but it’s absolutely not required. Your presence — and your belonging — are the heart of the table.
Questions? Email Queer in Christ leaders.

Spring Nature Therapy Walks
WEDNESDAY, MAY 6 & SATURDAY, JUNE 20 10 A.M.-NOON at Volunteer Park (registration required)
In early observance of Rogation Days, the parish will offer two Spring Nature Therapy Walks in Volunteer Park. These will take place from 10 a.m. to noon on May 6 (in observance of Rogation Days) and on June 20 (the Eve of the Summer Solstice). The purpose of the walk is to slow down, open our senses, and enjoy the beauty and healing that nature has to offer. Everyone is welcome, no experience is necessary, and we will walk at a slow, gentle pace.
The walks will be led by Dan Stroh, a certified forest therapy guide, in cooperation with Ancient Earth Outings. There is no cost, but space is limited, so registration is required.
For more information, you may contact Canon Rich Weyls.

Prophet of Justice, Prophet of Life: William Stringfellow
WEDNESDAY, MAY 6, 6:45-8:15 P.M. in Bloedel Hall and on Zoom
Join our curate, the Rev. Adam Conley for an introduction to the life, writings, and prophetic witness of William Stringfellow. Stringfellow was a civil rights lawyer and lay Episcopalian who called the church to action in the 1960s and 1970s in the face of historic injustices. This 20th century Christian prophet has piercing words of moral clarity to speak directly to our present day. Come gain insights into Stringfellow's insistence that the church’s commitment to social justice must always remain rooted in the Word of God and the corporate worship of the church.
Program is free; optional community dinner at 6 p.m. ($8/adult; $25/family max.)

Second Sunday Book Group: We Hereby Refuse
SUNDAY, MAY 10, 12:30 P.M. in Cathedral House 210
For our May book discussion Second Sunday Book Group is reading We Hereby Refuse: Japanese American Resistance to Wartime Incarceration, a graphic novel based upon painstaking research about those who resisted being sent to internment camps during WW II. Most stories from that time tell about people who didn't resist because they wanted to prove their loyalty to the U.S. This book is about three resisters. It was written and illustrated by four people who live in our area. Why this book now? For one reason, to gain a more complete understanding of that period and, for another reason, because it has some parallels to our time.
Questions? Contact Pearl McElheran.

The Art & Craft of God's Praise: The Hidden Life of Pipe Organs
WEDNESDAY, MAY 13 & 20, 6:45 P.M. in Bloedel Hall
This two-part forum on May 13 and 20 will be like that dissection lab in high school in which you got an unforgettable glimpse into a small creature's inner workings and learned how they are manifest on a larger scale in your own body. Here, guided by Canon Kleinschmidt, you will get to participate in taking apart and reassembling a miniature pipe organ! Equipped with insights gained through that unusual experience, you will then be introduced to the art, science, and history of organ building on a cathedral-sized scale. Why do pipe organs sound the way they do? Why do they look the way they do? Why, for centuries, have human beings found them useful in acts of public worship? Why might an instrument with such ancient origins be relevant to us today, and to all those who will come after us? Come and see!
Program is free; optional community dinner at 6 p.m. ($8/adult; $25/family max.)
