Dean Thomason's Sermon at Temple De Hirsch Sinai Postponed

Due to the spread of Omicron, Temple De Hirsch Sinai has elected to return to online-only services, and so Dean Thomason will not offer a sermon at this evening's Shabbat service as previously announced. His sermon has been rescheduled for March 18, 2022. (At this time Rabbi Weiner of Temple De Hirsch is still planning to preach at Saint Mark's on Sunday, January 30, at the 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. services.)
The Baptism of Our Lord

THIS SUNDAY, JANUARY 9

This Sunday is the observance of The Baptism of Our Lord Jesus, one of the four dates of the church year that the Book of Common Prayer identifies as particularly appropriate for the sacrament of Baptism. (The others are the Easter Vigil, which falls on April 16 in 2022, Pentecost on June 5, and All Saints’ Sunday on November 6).Two candidates will be baptized at the 11 a.m. service this Sunday. The 8 and 9 a.m. services will include a Renewal of Baptismal Vows.

Following the Magi: Exploring and Celebrating Dimensions of Culture

TWO WEDNESDAYS: JANUARY 19 & 26, BOTH 6:45-8:15 P.M., in Bloedel Hall and via Zoom

The season of Epiphany is a time of unveiling, light, and revelation. On Wednesdays, January 19 & 26, we will gather in the spirit of the Magi following the bright star, exploring and celebrating nine dimensions of culture. The Rev. Canon Eliacín Rosario-Cruz will facilitate our conversation.
On Wednesday, January 19, we will explore the following dimensions of culture:

  • Uncertainty Avoidance
  • In-Group Collectivism
  • Institutional Collectivism
On Wednesday, January 26, we will explore the following dimensions of culture:

The Inquirers' Class Returns for Spring 2022

SIX SUNDAY MEETINGS, 12:30–2 P.M., BEGINNING MARCH 6 AND CONTINUING THROUGH PALM SUNDAY, APRIL 10, 2022

No matter where you are on your journey, consider attending this two-class series, facilitated by clergy, where we will explore together the basics of the Christian faith through the Episcopal lens. Whether you are new to Saint Mark’s, or just interested in sharing and learning, you are welcome. After completing the series, many people often decide to receive the sacrament of baptism or be confirmed or received into the Episcopal Church. Attendees are strongly encouraged to attend all six sessions.

Flentrop Organ Concert

The next offering on the Saint Mark's Music Series will be a recital on the Flentrop by our own Canon Kleinschmidt and John Stuntebeck, presenting works by Dieterich Buxtehude, Nicolas de Grigny, Rachel Laurin, David Hurd, and the world premiere of a newly commissioned work by Oklahoma-based composer, Rebecca Groom Te Velde.

The visit to Saint Mark's of the Bishop of Indianapolis, The Rt. Rev. Jennifer Baskerville-Burrows, will include a workshop for clergy, a Saturday gathering to which all are invited, Sunday morning preaching, and a "Friends Talking" forum with Dean Thomason.

The all-day workshop on Saturday, January 15, titled Following Jesus to a New Counter-Cultural, Post-Pandemic Normal, will explore the resources of our faith tradition for grounded and connected life and ministry for all of God’s people. Registration is required for both in-person and online participation; find the registration form at this link.

NOTE:  For this all-day event, proof of vaccination or recent negative COVID test (professionally-administered PCR test in the previous 72 hours) will be checked at the entrance. Those without proof of vaccination or negative test will not be admitted. Masks must be worn at all times while indoors.

Grab your walking shoes and join us at the 2022 MLK Jr. Rally and March in Seattle. 2022 will mark the 39th year of this event honoring Dr. King's legacy.
 
Due to COVID, Garfield High School is CLOSED. There will be porta-potties (including an accessible unit), so please plan accordingly. Please dress warm and wear comfortable shoes.

The Radix Project: Small Groups/Deep Roots, an opportunity to gather in small groups to study, pray, and share together, continues with the theme Doing Justice, Loving Mercy. The series launches with an opening plenary presentation on Sunday evening, January 23, to which all are invited whether or not they intend to participate in group meetings. We have a number of poinsettias leftover from our Christmas decorations that need a new home! Feel free to take one or more plants with you after morning services. The poinsettias are in the "coffee corner" of the nave. After this Sunday, the remaining poinsettias will be discarded. Thank you!
Small Group Ministry Returns!
Radix 7: Doing Justice, Loving Mercy

OPENING PLENARY PRESENTATION: SUNDAY, JANUARY 23, 6:30-8 P.M.

SMALL GROUPS BEGIN TO MEET: WEEK OF JANUARY 24, and meet once a week for six weeks. All groups will meet online via Zoom only. Submit the online form to join a small group. Deadline to register: Monday, January 17.

The Radix Project: Small Groups/Deep Roots, an opportunity to gather in small groups to study, pray, and share together, has now been offered three times a year—in the winter, spring, and fall—since January of 2020. The offering is returning to an online-only format for its seventh iteration, starting in late January. New groups are formed for each series, so if you have not participated in the past, please consider signing up! Many community members have found it to be a profound and life-giving experience.

The theme for this series is Doing Justice, Loving Mercy—stay tuned for more details in the coming weeks. The series launches with an opening plenary presentation on Sunday evening, January 23, to which all are invited whether or not they intend to participate in group meetings. Welcome Lucas Jindra, Cathedral Music Intern

Lucas is in his second year of study at Saint Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, and is spending his January term in Seattle to learn as much as much as he can about what life in the music ministry at Saint Mark’s Cathedral is like. He will share in the organ playing, observe the work of the Choir School, sing in the adult choirs, receive coaching on the performance of organ literature with Canon Kleinschmidt, and coaching on organ accompanying with John Stuntebeck. On Sunday, January 16, he will offer the monthly Organ by Night program on the Flentrop organ after Compline, and can answer questions following his recital. Welcome, Lucas!
