Sunday Sermon
Bp. Mark W. Holmerud

Join us on the second Sunday of Easter as we, along with the nearly 200 other congregations of the Sierra Pacific Synod, hear a sermon by our bishop, the Rev. Mark Holmerud.

"There Will Be Joy"
Bishop Eaton's Easter Message

Our experiences this Easter are remarkably similar to those of the first Easter. Amidst fear and anxiety and crushing disappointment, we will sing our "Alleluias" with growing hope, strength, defiance and joy, confident that God loves us completely and has brought us into eternal life.

Christ is risen. Alleluia.

Rhythms of Renewal by Rebekah Lyons, Wednesdays at 7pm, beginning April 22nd

Daily struggles with anxiety and stress make it difficult to receive God's peace. Rhythms of Renewal will help you trade your anxiety for the vibrant life you were meant to live through four profound rhythms: rest, restore, connect, and create. With encouraging stories and practical steps, Rebekah Lyons will help you begin an intentional, lifelong journey toward sustained emotional, relational, and spiritual health. Rhythms of Renewal is your guide to daily rescue and a way forward into the peace your soul longs for.

The Road Back to You by Ian Morgan Cron and Suzanne Stabile, Sundays at 8am, beginning April 26th

Ignorance is bliss - except in self-awareness. What you don't know about yourself can hurt you and your relationships - and maybe even how you make your way in the world. It can also keep you in the shallows with God. Do you want help figuring out who you are and why you're stuck in the same ruts? The Enneagram is an ancient personality type system with an uncanny accuracy in describing how human beings are wired, both positively and negatively. In The Road Back to You, Ian Morgan Cron and Suzanne Stabile forge a unique approach - a practical, comprehensive way of accessing Enneagram wisdom and exploring its connections with Christian spirituality for a deeper knowledge of God and of ourselves.

No reading is required before the first session! For more information, please contact Andrea at
Labor of Love
Protective Masks for Health Care Providers

Our "Labor of Love" team has stayed very busy during the 'Shelter in Place'. We are still working in a production line of dresses by driving them doorstep to doorstep and each person doing their part to finish them.

We have now turned our focus on making MASKS for our local hospitals in need, church members and our Trinity homeless friends. With all hands on deck in this invisible war, we are the new "Rosie Riveters" sitting at our machines trying to make a difference where we can. Anyone who has 100% cotton sheets or fabric and small elastic they can donate, please let us know and we will pick it up to use for the masks. Anyone that can simply cut out or pin masks are welcome to help too! We have already created over 700 masks so far!

Contact Sue Lape to get involved with this ministry.

The Lead Pastor Call Search is Still On

Your Call Committee says "Hi!" from the land of Zoom!

Our call committee team has identified potential candidates for our Lead Pastor role and while shelter-in-place is limiting face-to-face time, we are still able to connect and progress via our "friend" Zoom!
Once the shelter-in-place is lifted we will be able to continue to the next stages of the process. Thank you for your continued prayers and support!
Christ in Our Home

If you would like to latest copy of "Christ in Our Home," please stop by campus and pick up a copy outside the main office door (street side) or you can ask a Saint Matthew helper to drop one by if you email your request to Tami Gomez. You can pick them up between 10am and 2pm, Monday through Thursday, or you can have it delivered to your email by signing up here.
We're Here for You!

If you have a confidential need for support at this time, please reach out to your faith community. Requests are confidential. We are able to offer spiritual support and in many cases can offer other types of assistance including financial support, and even toilet paper (yes, for real, just let Tami know). Please know that you are important and we want to come alongside you when we can.
For urgent pastoral care needs, please call the office and follow the prompts to be connected to the pastor on-call. For less urgent needs, such as grocery shopping or other support, please contact Tami Gomez.
A Celebration of Generosity and Faithfulness

Thank you, partners in mission and friends of Saint Matthew, for hearing our encouragement to continue to be generous and faithful in your support of the ministry of the congregation in these uncertain times. Through the mail and electronic giving, your support has been pouring in. Please keep the support coming, there is a bright future ahead for us!

There are a number of ways to electronically give regularly to Saint Matthew:

  • Set up Simply Giving. Simply Giving is a way to authorize a regular contribution (you choose the amount and regularity) that Saint Matthew will “pull” from your bank account. Here is a link to the form for Simply Giving.
  • Set up a recurring “Bill Pay” from your checking account. Use your bank’s bill pay feature to have them send your contribution to Saint Matthew. Your bank will mail the check to Saint Matthew at 399 Wiget Lane, Walnut Creek, CA 94598. (Hint: Your bank will ask you for Saint Matthew’s account number – just use your name for the account number.)
  • Set up a recurring contribution with your credit card. Go to the Saint Matthew website ( or the Saint Matthew app, choose GIVE, and follow the prompts.
  • Text the amount you would like to donate to 925-854-4402 and follow the prompts.

You can also send a check by mail to:

It is understandable that during this unusual time some of us may not be able to give to Saint Matthew due to job layoffs or reduction in hours. As part of the Council's fiduciary responsibility to Saint Matthew, the Executive Committee (comprised of Pastor Tim and Council officers) has reviewed the programs that are available to the church as part of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES). The decision has been made to apply for those programs that would benefit us. Saint Matthew has not yet been approved and, if approved, Council would make the decision to accept or decline, based upon the current financial need.
Easter Letter

There have been significant delivery delays from the post office and some congregants still have not received the Easter letter. The mailing included a letter from Pastor Tim ( click here to read Pastor Tim's letter) and an Easter Offering envelope. We are keeping with our practice of dedicating our Easter Offering to ministries beyond our regular budget. This year the recipients of this year’s Easter offering will be: Love-A-Child Missions, Points of Light Oakland Mission, Children’s Rescue Mission in Honduras, Young Life Krasnodar, and the Saint Matthew “In As Much Fund”. In the event that you do not receive the Easter mailing, you can give to the Easter offering by mailing a check to Saint Matthew (put Easter on the memo line) or give online and choose "Easter Offering" in the Fund dropdown list.
Saint Matthew Foundation Scholarship
Deadline is TONIGHT

Remember completed applications and all recommendations need to be submitted by TONIGHT at 6pm to be considered.
An update from Barbara Groenveld

Our usual date to assemble layettes for babies at the regional hospital in Martinez is the Tuesday after Mother’s Day, May 12th. No one knows if we will be able to meet and assemble at that time. As soon as the all clear sounds we can plan a date to meet and assemble.
In the meantime many have contacted me about getting ready and are using this time of social distancing to sew, knit, crochet, and
quilt items. Purchasing sleepers and onesies is only somewhat possible now. If you do, remember that we donate sizes 3 months and 3-6 months.  Please contact me at (925) 937-2047 if you have any questions.

Connecting on Social Media

We have a really great opportunity to invite our own communities to church right now, since anyone, anywhere can check out Saint Matthew! Every time you share a post from Saint Matthew, or share our YouTube link, you’re inviting your friends and family to church. Since starting our YouTube page, we’ve had over 2,660 views, and 56.2% of our viewers clicked over from Facebook! Church looks very different for us now, so it’s very important that we keep “showing up” for church on Sunday mornings on our social media platforms, so we can keep our congregation active and engaged with each other.

If you have Facebook:
  • Go to the Saint Matthew Lutheran Church Facebook page and make sure you click the “like” button. This will show you updates from Saint Matthew on your Facebook feed. Liking and commenting on posts from Saint Matthew that show up in your feed shows your support for what Saint Matthew is doing digitally.
  • When we post the links for church online, click the button says “Share” to post on your own Facebook profile. This is how you’re inviting your friends and family to church! It will leave space for you to add a caption for your post, so you can make it more personal for your profile.

If you have Instagram:
  • Go to the Saint Matthew Lutheran Church Instagram page (@saintmatthewwc) and make sure you click “follow.” This will show you updates from Saint Matthew on your Instagram feed. Liking (double tap the pictures!) and commenting will show your support!
  • On Sunday mornings, take a picture of what church looks like for you right now, and post on your Instagram feed or share in your Instagram stories. A picture of your TV or laptop with the service on, your cup of coffee, your household sitting together, etc are all great!
  • Tag Saint Matthew (@saintmatthewwc) in the picture or in the caption, and use the hashtag #smlcchurchonline. Using that hashtag allows us to easily find all of those posts and we can feature them in our Instagram stories to show how our community is still connected and active through this time when we’re all separated.
