"First, Light!"
Sunday Sermon

On Sunday, we kick-off a sermon series exploring the seven days of creation described in Genesis 1:1-2:3. Pastor Tim will lead us through Genesis 1:1-5, where we discover that the first thing God created is light! This light has been shining upon and through God's people ever since and scripture is filled with admonitions to let our light shine. The smallest thing can make a huge difference in the life of those we meet along the way.

Genesis 1:1-5 | Worship: 9 & 10:30am
Fall KICK-OFF

Join us this Sunday, September 8 between services, from 9:45-10:45am, in Fellowship Hall as we open sign-ups for those of us who are ready to take the Next Steps in our faith journey. There will be representatives from many of our Small Groups for Adults that meet on Sundays and throughout the week. Tanya and Mike will be available to talk about our Sunday and weekday opportunities for our children ages Pre-School through High School.

A Message from Lutheran Disaster Response

The situation
Hurricane Dorian has caused widespread destruction and flooding throughout the Bahamas and the U.S. Virgin Islands. While we wait for further details, we continue to surround all affected in prayer. Everyone who survived this hurricane will have extensive needs.

Our response
As in all disasters, the ELCA works closely with partners to respond to and support the communities affected. With the Bahamas, Lutheran Disaster Response (LDR) International and ELCA Global Mission will work through international relief partners–specifically through Church World Service Disaster Response. LDR-Int’l and Church World Service are committed to both immediate and long-term recovery for the whole area impacted by the storm.

Due to the unique international dynamics of the Bahamas, gift cards and supplies are not as helpful as financial donations. These funds—to BOTH the synod disaster response fund AND Lutheran Disaster Response—allow us to be most flexible and responsive to those in need. As soon as it is safe, Bishop Suarez and synod leadership will make a pastoral visit. 100% of donations to both LDR and the Florida-Bahamas Synod Disaster Fund will be directed towards the necessary relief and recovery work.

What you can do
Pray
Please pray for people who have been affected by hurricanes. May God's healing presence give them peace and hope in their time of need.

Give
Your gifts designated for “Hurricane Response” will be used entirely for direct response until it is complete.

Staffing Changes
Tami Gomez

Moving forward, Tami will be combining two areas of passion as she leads Care and Connecting Ministries. Tami will be assuming the Adult Next Steps (small and larger groups) Ministries and several of the Sunday morning ministry teams. Tami will continue to offer pastoral care and serve as the main contact person for our Visiting Care Team, TLC Ministry, and Prayer Ministries. Tami sees an organic link between connecting people and establishing caring relationships built in connection and is excited about her new role. Tami has been at Saint Matthew since she began worshiping here two decades ago while a college student at Saint Mary's College. She attended Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary graduating in 2010 with a Master of Christian Ministry. Tami would like for everyone at Saint Matthew to know they are loved and there is a place for you to plug in.

Tami is available Monday-Thursday and you will also see her on Sundays with her husband, Phil, and daughters Alondra, age 4, and Isabella, age 5. Contact Tami by email or at 925.932.1955 x107.
Amanda Hall

Amanda has been working at Saint Matthew for a year and a half. She has been supporting Teen Ministry and her role has expanded to include her many other talents as Amanda has moved to full time as our Communications Coordinator and Ministry Support. Administration is one of her spiritual gifts and she really loves and values being a support to what God is doing in different ministries behind the scenes. When she's not chasing after her 3 kiddos: Caedance (6), Rayce (4), and Isaiah (2), Amanda is a worship leader, an amateur acoustic guitar player, and is currently a distance student at Portland Seminary pursuing a Master of Arts in Theological Studies, with an emphasis in Biblical Studies.

Amanda is in the office Monday-Friday from 9-4.

Special Fall Appeal for Seminary Support

On Sunday, September 8, we are kicking off the "Seminary Fund," as approved by our Congregation Council, with the goal of raising $35,000 to support Mike Basil in his journey through seminary and the candidacy process to become an ELCA pastor.

Raising up the next generation of leaders for the church of Jesus' is a responsibility that we all share in the body of Christ. We already have the capacity to provide some support for seminarians through our Foundation, but this fund will allow us to go much further. Our goal is full tuition support and candidacy costs for Mike's program.

If we exceed our goal, we will be able to use the funds to support other seminarians on their journey toward ordination. What a joyful opportunity to support our future leaders.

To participate in this special appeal, write your check to Saint Matthew with the notation "Seminary Fund" in the memo line. Let us do what the Saint Matthew family does so well, and respond with joyful generosity.

Our initial appeal runs through the end of October. We will keep you posted on our progress.

September is National Emergency Preparedness Month

On Sunday, September 15 , we are having a planned evacuation of the sanctuary sometime before the service would normally end. When instructed, please exit the worship center as instructed and then rejoin us in Fellowship Hall for our fellowship time after worship. Our hope is that we will never have to evacuate the sanctuary; however, if there is a fire or other disaster, this is one step we are taking now to be prepared. Our goal is to see what we are able to do well and areas where we might need to improve. We would like to have the two services as full as possible in order to really assess how we are doing so please plan to attend church on Sunday, September 15 as Saint Matthew participates in our first emergency preparedness drill! If you have questions, please email Tami Gomez .
