October 10 E-News
A note from The Rev. Ann Weatherholt
Dear Friends at St. Peter's:

Thank you for the lovely reception and gifts (!!).  My glass rooster is sitting proudly on a prominent bookshelf and Allan and I are looking at the calendar for possible dinner dates in Frederick.  I thoroughly enjoyed my 8 weeks with you, and as I said to many, you really ARE a welcoming church!  I also enjoyed the rummage sale "madness" of Thursday evening -- what an impressive operation!  I plan to be there for Emily's+ installation in a few weeks, singing in the choir and greeting everyone.  May God continue to bless you all in your ministry and mission.

Fondly,
The Rev. Anne O Weatherholt (aka "Daniels's Mom")
Announcements
  • Sundowners party is back again this year! Join us to support Hope in South Africa on Saturday, October 19. We'll have rugby, party games, and live music starting at 1 pm. Please bring a dish and beverage to share and chairs for your family. No RSVP necessary. For directions and donations visit hopeinsouthafrica.com
  • All are invited to come to a reception on Monday, October 14 from 6:00-8:00 honoring the retirement of Catherine Beliveau, the outgoing Executive Director of WUMCO Help. Catherine has been very instrumental in the work of WUMCO, now in its 51st year of service to the community.  Under her leadership WUMCO has evolved into the most important social organization in western upper Montgomery.  Its many programs for the less fortunate among us have enriched the lives of hundreds of low-income families. You will have the opportunity not only to thank Catherine for her service but to leave behind your message of appreciation.  The reception will be held at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, (20100 Fisher Ave., Poolesville).  Light refreshments will be served.
  • PECANS This year's crop of pecans, mammoth halves and medium pieces, have been ordered.  Prices are the same as last year - $12 for the one pound bags of each.  They will be arriving in early to mid November.  Please let Barbara know if you would like to pre-order yours:  bkandreassen@comcast.net  They make a great gift and are far superior to anything purchased in a store.  They also freeze perfectly for long term use.
  • Fall-O-Rama Jazz Evening with the Montgomery Village Blue Notes is Saturday, November 2 here at Saint Peter's! Join us for an evening of jazz and fun. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased from the church office or by talking to Kevin Collar,
    kevincollar56@gmail.com.
  • Backpack Bites Program
The Free and Reduced Meals (FARMs) program at Montgomery County schools provides free or reduced cost breakfast and lunch to children from low income families.  This insures that those children have at least two meals a day. Last year, a program was started at Poolesville Elementary School to provide supplemental food over the weekend to FARMs families with elementary age children.  The program, Backpack Bites, is a collaboration between local churches and WUMCO Help. Backpack Bites provides a bag of food that contains enough food for (at least) one nutritious meal and snacks.  The bag is sent home on Friday of each week in a child's backpack. We currently have 29 families participating: 13 from PES and 16 from MES.
How to Help:
There are three ways to support this program:
  1. We need packers for the food bags.  Once a month, we meet to pack the bags for the next four weeks.  The whole process takes about one hour from set up through clean up. It is a fun, easy process. All packing events are being held at Poolesville Presbyterian Church.  SSL hours are available for these packing event. The first packing event of the school year will be on Saturday, October 12th, so we may start delivering bags on Thursday, October 17th.
  2. We need supplies!  Here is a list of needs for the packing:
Instant Oatmeal packets - Plain
Canned Vegetables
Single serving Fruit cups
Treats (granola bars/Cheese crackers)
8 oz shelf stable 2% Milk
Rice (1-pound bag)
Pasta (1-pound box)
Mac & Cheese
Peanut Butter (20-26 oz jars)
Dry Beans (1-pound bag)
Canned Tuna
3.       We will need volunteers to deliver the bags to two different schools.
Please contact Joel Tjornehoj ( jtjor@comcast.net) if you would like to get involved with this special program.
  • Please join us each Wednesday, in the children's chapel at 10:00 a.m. for St. Peter's Preschool Bible Storytime.  Each session includes songs, two Bible stories, simple craft and a snack. If you have friends or neighbors with preschool-aged children, please share this information about Bible Storytime, so they can join in the fun this fall.
  • Weekly choir rehearsals are now underway on Sundays in the choir room following the 10:30 service. We welcome all voices age High School and up to join. The choir sings for the 10:30 service and occasionally for the 8:00 service. Choir is a great way to make new friends, to enjoy fellowship, and to further your music education. We have several fun events planned for the fall including choir and orchestra music for Rev. Emily's installation as Rector and a Christmas Party at Daniel and Elizabeth's home in Baltimore. If you have any questions, please speak to Daniel Weatherholt, Director of Music or to a member of the choir. Daniel can also be reached at dweatherholt@stpeterspoolesville.org.
  • Do you play a musical instrument? Daniel would love to hear from you! We are looking for ways incorporate special music into worship on Sundays that the choir does not sing an anthem. Youth and adults are welcome to participate! To express interest, please speak to Daniel Weatherholt, Director of Music, or send him an e-mail at dweatherholt@stpeterspoolesville.org.
