A Message from RE Director, Robby Kiley
Dear Religious Education Families,
Happy New Year to all of you!

Did you know that Advent marks the beginning of a new Liturgical Year in our Church? Our old year ended with the celebration of the Solemnity of Christ the King (full name: Feast of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe - cool!). Our new year begins on December 3, with the celebration of the First Sunday of Advent.

We will welcome this new year by giving you some tips for celebrating Advent with your family, including a meditation on the readings of Advent from Intern Chris, a calendar of Advent events, and family Advent activities (revised and updated from last year!). You'll also find a message from Fr. Bill about the new Baptismal Font and Parish Life Center, exciting information about the new Whole Family Catechesis program, and an update from Children's Liturgy of the Word. We hope there is something inside that will help your celebration of this new Church year!

A Message from Father Bill
When I rode my bicycle from Canterbury to Rome a few years ago on the pilgrimage known as the Via Francigena, I was impressed with the Romanesque architecture of so many of the local Italian churches on the way.  Combined with my five years as Associate Pastor of Saint Monica Church in Mishawaka (a Romanesque church), the decision to build our new church in this architectural style was confirmed.

I was also struck by another detail in Italian churches. Many of them had a baptistery separate from the main church. Those baptisteries contained immersions pools and were constructed in an octagonal shape. The newly baptized Christian would emerge from the watery grave with all sins forgiven. Clothed with a white garment representing having put on Christ and carrying a candle signifying Christ's light, the new Christian would enter the church and be confirmed and welcomed to the Eucharist for the first time.

This ancient custom helped us make the decision about the placement of our new baptismal font in the Baptistery of the Parish Life Center, separate from the new church.

Whole Family Catechesis:
Last year, as we prepared to dedicate our new church, we hosted three nights of parish mission to help prepare our parish for the new space. It was a great couple of days to remind us that we as a parish community are the "living stones" that make up Saint Pius. During the mission, we had simultaneous programming for adults, teens, elementary students, and infants/toddlers. The whole family was able to come for the mission, and we loved seeing the way families would interact and share when they were reunited!
Inspired by this model, the Religious Education and Youth Ministry offices launched a new program this year:

"Whole Family Catechesis: Faith | Family | Food"

Turning Over Our Hearts to Jesus: A Reflection on the Advent Readings
A Message from Intern Chris Gattis

Advent is coming. The arrival of Jesus Christ at Christmas is upon us. Yet, we also wait in glorious anticipation for Jesus to come again as king of all creation. Advent is a season of waiting in two ways!
Children's Liturgy of the Word
Children's Liturgy of the Word welcomes our youngest parishioners, ages 4-6, on Sunday morning during the 8:00 and 10:00 a.m. Mass.

Children's Liturgy of the Word is a special celebration where our young children are invited to hear the Word of God on Sunday during Mass. The young children of the Parish learn the liturgical language of the Catholic Church and we nourish and guide their spiritual growth.

The little ones are enjoying the new meeting space in the Parish Life Center. While they hear the same Gospel as the grown-ups in the church, they get to  wiggle and hear it explained just for them.
