ALUMNI PROFILE

Mackenzie Urban '17

As a transfer student to Saint Mary School, I quickly noticed the higher academic standards and the incredible support from teachers and staff. They helped prepare me for high school, college, and beyond, teaching me teamwork, communication, and the confidence to advocate for myself—skills I know I wouldn’t have gained in public school.

My favorite class was ILA with Mrs. DeSimone. Her focus on Greek and Latin roots, writing, and reading comprehension made a huge difference during my transition and continues to help me every day. In 6th-grade math, I struggled until my teacher offered lunch-time tutoring—an opportunity that would never have existed at my old school. By year’s end, I earned High Honor Roll and learned to take ownership of my education.

Saint Mary instilled a strong sense of service that shaped my life. I carried that value through high school and college, volunteering with PCAA and Girl Scouts through my sorority. I still miss the close-knit Saint Mary community most—many of my middle school friends remain my closest today.

Some of my favorite memories include Activity Day, our 8th-grade trip to Six Flags, retreat days, and helping with art displays and yearbook alongside Mrs. Marsh. The school’s motto, “Passionately Catholic. Academically Excellent. Filled with Joy,” still guides me. My Catholic foundation gave me balance and faith I lean on daily, especially in my career.

I graduated from High Point University with a bachelor’s in business administration and finance and a master’s in business communication—finishing college a full year early thanks to the strong foundation I received at Saint Mary School. I now work as an Expense Specialist at Spectrotel in Neptune, NJ.

I will always cherish my time at Saint Mary School and hope every future student creates the same wonderful memories I did.

SCHOOL SPOTLIGHT

It was great to see so many families pic up our signs. Please take one home from Mass and display on your yards to help promote Saint Mary School and Church!

FAMILY SPOTLIGHT

Kransniqi Family

Before my husband and I got married, we made a few promises to each other. Mine was that our children would attend Catholic school. His was that we would always have carpeting in the bedroom rather than wood floors and I hate carpet.

When we moved to Middletown in 2018, we enrolled our son Jack in the Little Saints program at Saint Mary School, and I immediately loved it. Then, of course, COVID disrupted everything. Like many families, we decided to try public school since “everyone” said Middletown had a wonderful school system. Jack started kindergarten there and attended public school from grades K–2. I truly have no complaints about our experience; it was actually very positive.

But I knew something was missing.

That something was God, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

During Jack’s second-grade year in public school, I began sending my younger daughter, Eloise, to the Tiny Tot program at Saint Mary’s. Every single day when I dropped her off, I could feel the love and warmth from the teachers and staff. It was tangible. And while our public-school experience was good, I wasn’t feeling that same faith-filled connection there and I missed it deeply.

I longed to be part of a community rooted in faith, where children are taught not only to love themselves, but to love their neighbor. I wanted my children to be educated by people who share the same values and beliefs that my husband and I hold close to our hearts. Most importantly, I wanted God to be part of their everyday lives even during the hours when I couldn’t be with them.

Perhaps I am partial, since I attended Catholic school my entire life. But to this day, I still rely on that community. The friendships and relationships I formed through my Catholic education remain active and meaningful in my life.

Above all, I believe Saint Mary School forms the whole person, academically, spiritually, and morally. And that is why we so passionately choose to send our children here.

Thank you for allowing me to share.

Sincerely,

Marilu Krasniqi

CATHOLIC CLASSICAL LIBERAL ARTS EDUCATION

Catholic Summary of the Article: “It’s the Friction, Stupid”

by Susan B. Arico (published March 9, 2026)

At the heart of the article is a profoundly Catholic truth: overcoming friction — the obstacles, struggles, and resistance of daily life — is not something to eliminate, but the very path to human flourishing and holiness. Just as Christ embraced the Cross, we are called to lean into life’s difficulties rather than flee them. Removing too much friction in the name of comfort actually prevents us from becoming the saints God created us to be. I encourage all to read the article.

SAINT MARY SCHOOL

Help transform Saint Mary School with Traditional Sacred Art

Four years ago, Saint Mary School joyfully adopted a Catholic Classical Liberal Arts philosophy—an educational approach rooted in the rich intellectual and spiritual tradition of the Church. This model forms students not only in academic excellence but in virtue, beauty, and truth, integrating faith with reason across all subjects. Students encounter the great works of Western Civilization, explore Scripture and Church teaching, and learn to see all knowledge as flowing from and leading back to God.

To further support this sacred mission and ensure that the physical environment of our school reflects our Catholic identity, Saint Mary School is embarking on a new project to purchase Traditional Catholic Art. These sacred images—of Jesus, Our Lady, the saints, and moments from salvation history—will help lift students' hearts and minds to the divine as they walk through the school halls each day. The atmosphere created by such sacred art can profoundly influence the spiritual and intellectual formation of our students.

We are inviting parishioners and alumni to join us in this beautiful endeavor by sponsoring a piece of Catholic art in memory of a loved one—a family member, teacher, priest, or alumnus. Each piece costs approximately $1,000 and will serve as a lasting legacy within our school.

If you would like to support this project and reserve a piece of art, please contact our school president, Mr. Craig Palmer, at cpalmer@stmaryes.org or call 732-671-0071 x221. Thank you for helping us form the next generation of saints.
