Father's Message

Beloved brothers and sisters in Christ,

August is the month of Our Lady. The Assumption of the Virgin Mary feast is in the middle of the month and is the Easter of the summer. This feast is so important that our church has defined 14 days fast before it. That is to emphasize its importance in the yearly calendar. The Virgin Mary, for us Orthodox, is our mother, the woman for whom the Jewish people worked to give to humanity. The entire course of Israel was made for her from the first Adam to Christ. She is the only woman who carried God in her womb, the second person of the Holy Trinity, Jesus Christ, for nine months, and that is why she is called Theotokos. She is the one who fully understands us. She understands parents' pain for their children, our petitions for health, and our sufferings in this life. She understands, reaches out to help us, and asks her Son and God to solve our problems.

For this reason, in addition to fasting, we have the Great and Little Parakleses to the Virgin Mary every day from August 1st to August 13th. So, my brothers and sisters, our St. Spyridon church will have Paraklesis to Our Lady for health and salvation every day at 7 pm, according to the program you may find on our website or in our church. Let's not miss this opportunity to speak with our Virgin Mary, describing to her our joys while asking her to deliver us from our sorrows.

I pray for a happy August 15th, and the Virgin Mary may be with you.

With much honor and pray

Fr. Gregory Stamkopoulos

Presiding Priest of St. Spyridon, NYC

In response to the tragic humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, and the immediate aid needed there, His Eminence Archbishop Elpidophoros of America announced a major fundraising effort today that will help those most affected by the Russian invasion.
The first action taken by Archbishop Elpidophoros this morning was to donate $100,000 to the Ecumenical Patriarchate to support the efforts of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine. Archbishop Elpidophoros also announced the creation of the Ukrainian Relief Effort, which was established in collaboration with International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC)*.
Together, the Archdiocese and IOCC aim to raise $1 million for both immediate and long-term support of the Ukrainian people.
In his Encyclical on the crisis, Archbishop Elpidophoros states:
"We join our spirit to the spirit of His All-Holiness and exhort all our Faithful: offer prayers and tangible support for all the Ukrainian People, those of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine and those of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church under the Moscow Patriarchate, those of the Ukrainian Catholic and Jewish communities, and all who find themselves in the dire circumstances of war.”

 2022 Stewardship Campaign

Click and Pay your Stewardship or Make a Donation

In January, we started our 2022 Stewardship Campaign by reaching out to all of St. Spyridon’s parishioners and friends. We feel blessed and humbled by your enthusiastic response. But there is still a lot to do. To face the uncertainty of the future, we need to build our community here and now based on the embodiment of Christ’s teaching and example. This is why stewardship is so crucial.

As you know, Orthodox Christian Stewardship is a way of life that acknowledges our responsibility before God. A primary goal of stewardship is spiritual growth. We become Stewards when we believe in God and begin to act on our beliefs. As Orthodox Christians, we acknowledge that every aspect of our life is a gift from Him. We are called to cheerfully offer back to God a portion of the gifts with which we have been blessed.

An Orthodox Christian Steward is an active participant in the life of the Church, as the Body of Christ, in its prayers and services, in its social and philanthropic activities.

So, what can we do? Offer Treasury. Sure, we need it to keep our church open. But we can also give of our Time and Talent to the Church. What does that mean? Good question! In an effort to make stewardship more concrete, the Stewardship Committee has decided to dedicate the next four Sundays to stewardship awareness. We will bring in people who will share with the community their experience with stewardship.

Hymns of the Day

Resurrectional Apolytikion in the Plagal Second Mode

Angelic powers were above Thy tomb, and they that guarded Thee became as dead. And Mary stood by the grave seeking Thine immaculate Body. Thou hast despoiled Hades and wast not tried thereby. Thou didst meet the Virgin and didst grant us life. O Thou Who didst arise from the dead, Lord, glory be to Thee.

Apolytikion for Eudocimus of Cappadocia in the Fourth Mode

The One that hath called thee from the earth to Heaven to dwell * preserveth thy body uncorrupted after thy death, O saintly Eudocimus; * for in living modestly and chastely, O blest one, * thou didst keep thy flesh free of all stain and defilement; * with boldness, therefore, pray unto Christ that we may all be saved.

Apolytikion for the Church in the First Mode

O Father, God-bearer, Spyridon, you were proven a champion and Wonder Worker of the First Ecumenical Council. You spoke to the girl in the grave and turned the serpent to gold. And, when chanting your prayers, most sacred One, angels ministered with you. Glory to Him who glorified you; glory to Him who crowned you; glory to Him who, through you, works healing for all.

Seasonal Kontakion in the Grave Mode

You were transfigured upon the mount, O Christ our God, and Your disciples, in so far as they could bear, beheld Your glory. Thus, when they see You crucified, they may understand Your voluntary passion, and proclaim to the world that You are truly the effulgence of the Father.

 Epistle Reading

Prokeimenon. Plagal Second Mode. Psalm 27.9,1.

O Lord, save your people and bless your inheritance.

Verse: To you, O Lord, I have cried, O my God.

The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Romans 15:1-7.

Brethren, we who are strong ought to bear with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves; let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to edify him. For Christ did not please himself; but, as it is written, "The reproaches of those who reproached thee fell on me." For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that by steadfastness and by the encouragement of the scriptures we might have hope. May the God of steadfastness and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. Welcome one another, therefore, as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.

Plagal Second Mode.

 Liturgical Gospel Reading

7th Sunday of Matthew

The Reading is from Matthew 9:27-35

At that time, as Jesus passed by, two blind men followed him, crying aloud, "Have mercy on us, Son of David." When he entered the house, the blind men came to him; and Jesus said to them, "Do you believe that I am able to do this?" They said to him, "Yes, Lord." Then he touched their eyes, saying, "According to your faith be it done to you." And their eyes were opened. And Jesus sternly charged them, "See that no one knows it." But they went away and spread his fame through all that district.

As they were going away, behold, a dumb demoniac was brought to him. And when the demon had been cast out, the dumb man spoke; and the crowds marveled, saying, "Never was anything like this seen in Israel." But the Pharisees said, "He casts out demons by the prince of demons."

And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every infirmity among the people.

7th Sunday of Matthew

Obituary

Sophie Aivazis (nee Polihrom), 103, of Fort Lee, NJ, passed away on Wednesday, July 27, 2022. Sophie was born in the West Village of Manhattan, NY in 1919 to parents who emigrated to the U.S. from Kastoria, Greece. She lived in Washington Heights for many years and then settled in Fort Lee, NJ in 1977.

She was predeceased by her husband Constantinos Aivazis, and survived by her son and daughter-in-law Mr. & Mrs. Elias and Mary Aivazis of Charlottesville, VA; grandchildren Alexander Aivazis of Columbia, SC and Elizabeth Aivazis of Crozet, VA; and her only surviving sibling, her sister Mrs. Martha Pinou of Cliffside Park, NJ. Sophie and her husband were devout members of St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church in Manhattan, the parish in which they were married and where her son attended parochial school and was also subsequently married.

Sophie proudly served as the grand matriarch of her extended family. She was an eternal optimist, always seeing the best in both people and the circumstances which presented themselves. She was always positive in her outlook and strove to overcome her challenges, to include cancer and heart disease, both of which she beat; she was a true survivor. Sophie had one priority in life, her family, to which she was dedicated throughout her lifetime. She touched so many lives with her kindness and generosity and was a greater than life figure by virtue of her will to live and the happiness and joy which she spread to those whom she loved. She will be missed by so many who knew and loved her.

The viewing will be held on Saturday morning, July 30, 2022, at 9:30 am, St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church, 124 Wadsworth Ave., New York, NY 10033 with the funeral immediately following at 10:30am. Arrangements by Riverdale Funeral Home, 5044 Broadway, New York, NY 10034. Donations in Sophie’s name can be made to the Kastorian Society, 150-28 14th Ave., Whitestone, NY 11357.
