A Practice of Openness

The practice of Centering Prayer invites us into a profound paradox:

by giving our complete attention to God, we receive more than we

could imagine. Like opening our hands to release what we hold too

tightly, this practice can help us cultivate a generous spirit.

To begin, find a comfortable position, close your eyes, and take a few

slow breaths. From this still place, choose a sacred word that represents

your intention to be generous—perhaps “open,” “give,” “share,” or

“release.” As you continue to breathe, silently introduce your sacred

word as a symbol of your consent to God’s presence and action within.

When you notice your mind straying with thoughts, feelings, or sensations—

whether pleasant or challenging—simply return to your sacred

word. This gentle returning is itself an act of generosity; you are giving

your full attention to God’s presence.

Many find this practice challenging at first. Our minds naturally want to

plan, solve, or worry. Yet each time we notice our wandering and gently

return to our breath and sacred word, we practice letting go of our need

to control. We learn to trust that in releasing our grip on our thoughts

and concerns, we open ourselves to receive what God wants to offer us

in this moment.

End by slowing opening your eyes and then see if you can carry this spirit

of openness into your day. You might find that this practice naturally

flows into greater generosity with others.

RPM Voices of Rhode Island Rocks the Hall

Sunday’s concert of African-American choral music rocked St. Columba’s parish hall like never before, offering quite a contrast to what we’re used to in our concert series (and isn’t that the point?). The 21 singers, along with 2 pianists, a bassist, and a drummer, perfectly illustrated the energy, the spirit and the love that has defined the African-American spirit for generations and brought the audience, very nearly a full house, to its feet more than once, cheering lustily.

The choir, featuring young and old, black and white, male and female singers, including three soloists, performed 14 pieces over an hour plus. All stayed for the reception afterwards, mingling with audience members and visiting the chapel.

There was general agreement that this glorious and uplifting concert was the perfect antidote for these troubling times and for that we thank RPM Voices of Rhode Island who, I can promise you, will be back.

Sara Chadwick

It was a very joyful and meaningful experience in every way. Uplifting. Soul-filling. Thank you, Sara Chadwick, and Concert Committee, for your musical—and pastoral—support of our beloved community.

I know I speak for us all when I say we are deeply grateful. - Rev. Anne

St. Columba's community is excited about giving to the Martin Luther King food pantry. Each month we will be asking for specific needs where the shelves are deficient. Baskets will be in the back of the church as well as the parish hall for our contributions which will be delivered as the end of the month. If each of us will donate just one of these items we will share in the feeding of the 5,000.

Fifth Sunday in Lent

Sunday April 6, 2025

Proper C

Almighty God, you alone can bring into order the unruly wills and affections of sinners: Grant your people grace to love what you command and desire what you promise; that, among the swift and varied changes of the world, our hearts may surely there be fixed where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ our Lord,

who lives and reigns with you and the

Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
