Melinda Carlson, Co-Director of Christian Life and Chair of the Fine Arts Department teaches Speech to all freshmen students. This week, students wrote and presented original speeches specific to the highs and lows of 9th grade incorporating lyrics from songs that resonate with them. As one student in the class described, “Art decorates space while music decorates time.” Christian Rosales wrote about the fleeting happiness of the material world and the eternal grace of God. The following is the text of his speech:
Going into high school, I knew there would be people who had better materialistic things than me. Some people will hold you to a certain standard based on the clothes you wear or the things you have. Comparison will bring people’s confidence down, and it takes time to learn that worldly things are only temporary and only matter in the short, earthly life you will live. In the song “Love Yourz,” J. Cole writes, “Always gon’ be a whip that’s better than the one you got, Always gon’ be some clothes that’s fresher than the ones you rock, Always gon’ be a girl that’s badder out there on the tours, But you ain’t never gon’ be happy ‘til you love yours.” These lyrics express that the time you spend on this earth caring about the things that you don’t have will make you feel unhappy, unfulfilled, and empty until you learn to love the things you do have.
Since worldly things won’t matter for that long, it has been one of my goals in 9th grade to get closer to God. I know I sometimes fall short in doing the things that will improve my relationship with Him, but I recognize those mistakes and try to learn from them. Travis Scott sings in his song, “Star Gazing” something that I can relate to when I don’t follow my intuition,
“Then a storm came in and YOU saved my life/ Head up to the sky, down on my knees/ Out of nowhere, you came to save the night.” While these lyrics might have a different meaning for other people, for me, they explain that during a time of hardship, out of nowhere God comes and takes you out of those hard times, and puts you on your feet to face the world once again.
Great job Christian! Your message is a great reminder to us all!
