VCHS was founded in 1998 and Coach Kuhns and Coach Alexander joined us as early pioneers with Saints Basketball and Volleyball in 2001. It’s now time to honor both of them for their exceptional commitment to VCHS and hundreds of Saints athletes. Mark your calendars: On February 18th we will dedicate and name the basketball and volleyball courts after two VCHS legends – Coach Kuhns and Coach Alexander. Earlier this week, this is what I shared with both coaches and their families:
Sheldon Kuhns has invested deeply into the lives of his basketball players for 22 seasons from 2001 until today. Cool and calm, humble, and fun-loving, Coach Kuhns is also a fierce competitor. To date, his teams have won 3 League Championships, 2 District Championships, 2 Region Championships, and made 3 State Tournament appearances including the State Final Four. In February 2019, Coach Kuhns recorded his 200th win. More importantly, for the young men on Coach Kuhns’ teams, he desires to see them develop Christ-like character, regularly coaching them through Fight Club. His mantra, and what his players chant when breaking from a team huddle – Team Together – will never be forgotten. Because of Coach Kuhn’s leadership, particularly in building a positive program culture, basketball is a signature Vail Christian sport, and one that is highly respected in Eagle County, the Western Slope, and throughout Colorado. Today, hundreds of men call Coach Kuhns their mentor and friend. Because of his deep, long-term commitment to Vail Christian High School, Saints Basketball, and so many men, Vail Christian High School hereby declares the basketball court in Wheeler Athletic Center be named and dedicated in honor of Coach Kuhns and for God’s glory. From this day forward it becomes the Coach Kuhns Court.
Cathy Alexander invested deeply into the lives of her volleyball players for 15 seasons from 2001-2015. Humble and always wanting the spotlight to be on her players, Coach Alexander was also a fierce competitor. During her tenure, her teams won 4 League Championships and 3 Region Championships, as well as made 5 State Tournament appearances. Exemplifying Cathy’s giftedness as a coach, many of her players developed the skills and passion to compete in volleyball at the collegiate level. More importantly, she prepared her volleyball players for life. She kept Christ at the center of her coaching and mentoring and her players were known to chant ‘For Him’ at the end of huddle breaks. Because of Coach Alexander’s leadership, particularly in building a positive program culture, volleyball remains a signature Vail Christian sport. Today, hundreds of women call Coach Alexander their mentor and friend. Because of her deep, long-term commitment to Vail Christian High School, Saints Volleyball, and so many women, Vail Christian High School hereby declares the volleyball court in Wheeler Athletic Center be named and dedicated in honor of Coach Alexander and for God’s glory. From this day forward it becomes the Coach Alexander Court.
Go Saints!
