October 27, 2022

Hello Steve, Enjoy our Saints News!
HEAD OF SCHOOL MUSING

Bentley. What comes to mind? A British luxury car? Yes. But for us in Saints Nation a new image should appear – our very own mascot – drum roll, please – Bentley, the Saint Bernard. Thank you Student Council and the Class of 2022!

It should be no surprise that a Saint Bernard is the mascot for a school that has called its students and teams ‘Saints’ since 1998. After all, the St. Bernard connects us to our faith (St. Bernard of Clairvaux, an 11th century Christian leader) and our mountain geography (St. Bernard rescue dogs known for their heroic acts in the Alps).

Bentley will be making appearances this weekend, and you don’t want to miss him. Join us at 6:00 on Friday to watch our 15-3 (ranked #6 in State) Lady Varsity Volleyball Saints play Rangely. And then join us again at 12:00 (Tailgate) and 1:00 (Kickoff) on Saturday to see our 6-1 (ranked #6 in State, also) Football Team take on Rangely. Go Bentley! And Go Saints!

VCHS Students Speak at the Ethical Leadership Forum in Vail

Saints Jillian Lee '23, Jeep Meynier '24, Angel Palacio '23, Daisy Palacio '23, Jesus Palacio, '25, Jorge Sinaloa '24 and Juliet Studness ' 24 were invited to attend the Ethical Leadership Forum to speak about their Student Shoulder to Shoulder experience. Pictured above are Jesus, Juliet, Daisy and Angel. Pictured below is Juliet speaking at the forum.

Student Shoulder-to-Shoulder is a program that helps nourish global citizenship education and ethical leadership in high school students locally and around the world.

Juliet went to New Orleans for coastal land loss and habitat restoration in marginalized communities and Jesus went to Costa Rica along with Angel and Daisy for sea turtle conservation and empowerment in local communities. Jeep went to San Diego to learn about border communities and Jorge went to Dartmouth to learn about sustainable living and human impact of the environment.

Two VCHS teachers also participated in Shoulder to Shoulder trips this summer: Kasey Desmond, Social Science Department, went to Bocas del Toro, Panama and Andrea Juskaitis, English Department, went to Cuzco Peru and the Andean Mountains to indigenous communities.

VCHS is a partner school with Student Shoulder to Shoulder and we are hoping to have more students involved through this program in 2023.

Seasonal Fruit Bowl

The Community Health and Food Sustainability class in collaboration with Rustic Farm to Fork will be providing a seasonal fruit bowl to students starting on October 18th. This fall, the fruit bowl will be stocked with Colorado apples and pears from Austin Family Farms in Paonia. This is part of an initiative from the Community Health and Food Sustainability class to support Colorado farmers and provide a healthy snack option for students to eat between classes.

All Saints and their families are invited to donate to the weekly seasonal fruit bowl to ensure healthy snacks are available to the VCHS community. Please click here to sign up to donate to this cause. A note of thanks recognizing our donors will be attached to the fruit bowl each week.
