Heading off to college, I knew very little about the liberal arts tradition that I was about to experience. Although I majored in history, I also needed to fulfill all types of ‘gen ed’ requirements in art history, music, philosophy, etc. During those four years, I learned what it meant to be well-rounded, shaped by lofty Renaissance ideals.
While fine arts programs are often underfunded or even cut at K-12 schools and universities, we see them as an integral part of a VCHS education, so much so that we also have fine arts graduation requirements, seldom seen in many high school settings. For a school our size, the course offerings are robust in five areas: Chapel Band, Choral Ensemble, Digital Media, Theater, and Visual Arts. We also offer niche classes like Art of Business and Spring Musical Set Design.
Unless you sit in on classes, attend a chapel, or join us for a production, it’s difficult to fully grasp how well-rounded and artistic our students are. For last week’s Admission Open House, Digital Media produced this 8-minute video that nicely highlights VCHS Arts.
Our students can also participate in the arts through student-led, teacher-advised clubs. This year, clubs include Articulation Magazine, Jewelry, Photography, Swing Dance, Vinyl Record, and Yearbook.
You’re invited to see all the arts showcased on the evening of December 9th at the Fine Arts Christmas Celebration. It will be an opportunity to celebrate the hard work of our students and their teachers.
