Colorado is the 8th largest state based on land size. Visualize the state’s boundary lines but cut off the I-25 corridor heading east. Picture Colorado now with Wyoming in the north, Utah in the west and New Mexico in the south. Vail Christian High School is close to the center of this Rocky Mountain region. Then consider this. By enrollment size, VCHS is the largest Christian (or Catholic) high school in this vast land expanse.
Why does this matter? Simply put, because of Jesus Christ, VCHS is light for our students where there is darkness. In the Gospel of John, Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” That light was on full display at the annual Fine Arts Christmas Celebration on Tuesday night. Christmas was celebrated and Jesus Christ was worshipped as Immanuel – God with us! For schools in these times, this is not the norm.
At the Celebration, light was this year’s theme. The Fine Arts Department composed of Melinda Carlson (Choral), Heidi Cofelice (Visual Arts), Brian Hall (Digital Media), and JD Webster (Worship Arts) created an evening not to be forgotten. Almost half of the student body was involved, showcasing the arts.
The visual arts were on full display with AP Studio Art, Studio Art I and Art of Business pieces, including manger scenes. Digital Media students Thankful Video Projects were shown throughout the night setting a tone of gratitude. There were two unique ensembles including Izzy King (piano) and Paige Middleton (violin) performing a transposed Corelli/Vivaldi piece and Marek Labenski (piano), Paige Middleton (violin) and Lluvia Esparza (vocal) performed Christmastime.
The Choral Ensemble began by performing Carol of The Bells, a Ukrainian Christmas Carol as well as White Winter Hymnal, Silent Night, Holy Night and even the fun You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch along with several others. With one of the pieces, Kyra Amass performed an interpretive dance. Sprinkled throughout the evening, the Chapel Band led us in worship with music including Here Comes Heaven. The sound and light crew put the icing on the cake ensuring the entire night came together beautifully.
I’ll close with the chorus from Here Comes Heaven.
Angels let your song begin
Here comes heaven
Christ is born in Bethlehem
Here comes heaven
The Light of the World has come and is with us now. Merry Christmas!
