Greetings! Enjoy our Saints News!
HEAD OF SCHOOL MUSINGS
I’m not sure what the Beatles intended to say with their 1967 smash hit ‘Hello, Goodbye’, but their hello-goodbye lyrics came to mind as I prepared to write this musing. We have a VCHS goodbye and a hello. This summer, Heather Downey will transition from her Director of Admissions role back to a fuller-time mom and her business. These last 3 years, Heather has been invaluable to our admissions success and has served our school in all kinds of other ways – with her Connect group, substitute teaching, acts of kindness and service, and the list goes on and on. Thank you, Heather, for all you've given VCHS and for finishing this school year strong as we continue to round out the Class of 2025. Heather has already been working with her successor to pass the baton this summer.

I'm incredibly excited that Kristy Maslan, our Office Manager, will be our new Director of Admissions starting this summer. Kristy not only brings a year of VCHS experience working in a multi-faceted role, but she also has a strong background in sales and marketing with her real estate and retail background. Kristy will be fabulous in this role and is not too far away from already thinking about the Class of 2026 – today’s 7th graders!

And with that transition, the Office Manager position opened up and I'm also excited to announce that Shannon O'Brien will fill that role starting this summer. Shannon brings a wealth of school experience as she's been a fixture on the Vail Christian Academy staff for 11 years. She also knows VCHS like the back of her hand as a VCHS parent (McKenzie ’12, Barb ’18, and Slater ’21) and a super-star parent volunteer, including serving the last few years as a key leader with our Parent Association. We’re thrilled Shannon will be joining the VCHS Team!

SPORTS
Connor Downey, our very own California Redwood

Meet VCHS Student-Athlete Connor Downey:
  • Date of birth: June 27, 2003.
  • Parents: Jim and Heather Downey.
  • Siblings: Ryan, 19, and Quinn, 15.
  • How is golf different from basketball? “I think the camaraderie is a lot different. You have a lot of different people with different goals to accomplish. It’s an interesting space. We all have to come together as one.”
  • Proudest moment in basketball? “I think it was last year. Ryan was still in high school so all three of us (the Downey brothers) were playing at the same time with the Moritz brothers (Alec and Theo).”
  • What is coach Sheldon Kuhns like? “It’s the confidence he has in me. He’s not going to take me out. In fact, he’s probably going to play me more. He has more confidence in me than I do in myself and that’s cool.”
  • Favorite subject: Physics.
  • Career plans: “I’m better at math than anything, so I’m looking at engineering or architecture.”

STUDENT LIFE
The Social Dilemma
On Tuesday, Vail Christian High School students and faculty viewed and discussed The Social Dilemma, a powerful docudrama in which Silicon Valley insiders expose ‘exploitative and addictive technology’ helping viewers understand how social media platforms work and how they impact us. By watching this together, the hope is that our VCHS school community will develop a common vocabulary, better understand the intersection of social media and mental health and take action to better student lives and move towards a healthier alignment with who God created us to be.

In many Christian traditions, people observe Shrove Tuesday which precedes Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent. At VCHS, our tradition is pancakes!
The VCHS Admin team serves the 5th Annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Lunch. Students enjoyed pancakes, bacon, sausage, and all the fixings.

DOES GOD EVEN CARE ABOUT ME?
In 2015, The New York Times ran an article called “Googling for God.” In this article, author Seth Stephens-Davidowitz starts by saying, “It has been a bad decade for God, at least so far.” He goes on to ask, “What questions do people have when they are questioning God?”
