Greetings! Enjoy our Saints News!
HEAD OF SCHOOL MUSINGS
Is your student looking for a ‘normal’ summer experience? Looking to serve others and learn along the way? Is he/she interested in the environment, working with children, and connecting the two?

VCHS is 1 of 14 member schools with Students Shoulder-to-Shoulder (SStS), a locally-based non-profit with a bold purpose – to grow a global network of ethical leaders. This summer, SStS is offering 9 global, domestic, and Colorado based trips. To avoid risk to their students and NGO partners, SStS has pushed their programming deep into the summer months so that participating students might have an opportunity to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 prior to travel.

However, there is a Colorado trip based in Boulder in which students will work with Thorne Nature Experience connecting environmental stewardship and a youth camp program. This experience does not require participating students to be vaccinated. VCHS students can apply for this opportunity and join other SStS member school students. If there’s enough interest from VCHS students, as well as from a few of our faculty, SStS has agreed that the trip could be solely tailored for VCHS. It’s currently scheduled July 25-August 7.
I’m a huge fan of SStS, especially because one of their trips had a huge impact on my son between his junior and senior years at VCHS. This is what he had to say:

  • My SStS experience in Peru was by far one of the highlights of my time in high school. It wasn't just because it was a thrilling adventure in the high Andes, it wasn't just because of the meaningful relationships that I made; it was because I was able to immerse myself in an entirely different culture.

  • I learned a lot through my SStS experience – ethical leadership principles, the local environment and indigenous traditions, but most importantly I discovered the importance of the shared human experience.

  • SStS offers an opportunity to push yourself out of your comfort zone, have an experience you will never forget, and leave inspired to bring about positive change.
Thomas O’Neil – Vail Christian High School ’19, Georgetown University ’23

I’d encourage your student to apply to any of the programs and SStS will hold a spot with no financial risk at this time. If a sufficient number of VCHS students apply for the Thorne Nature Experience in Boulder, we will work to make it an exclusive SStS-VCHS trip. I’m passionate about this because it’s so on point with our school’s mission – equipping mind, body, and spirit for lives of purpose, service, and leadership!

BRAVOS!
Senior Saints Basketball

We honored our 5 senior basketball players: Zoey Barela, Greta Grems, Kaylie Kraft, Grace McCurdy, and Sandra Tellor after Monday's game with Soroco. Congratulations to these students who are closing a chapter of their lives and heading onto the next season of their lives. We are very proud of them.
Kudos to Jim Pyke - Recognizing Female Diversity in AP Computer Science
Studying computer science can open doors for students, giving them the tools to excel, and setting them up for high-paying careers, but girls have been left behind for far too long. That’s why the College Board is honoring schools for expanding young women's participation in AP Computer Science classes and for the important steps they’re taking to reach gender parity. Schools receiving the AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award have achieved either 50% or higher female exam taker representation in one of or both AP Computer Science courses, or a percentage of female computer science exam takers that meets or exceeds that of the school’s female population.

NATIONAL DAY OF UNPLUGGING
March 5-6, 2021
On the first Friday in March, National Day of Unplugging, kicks off a 24-hour period from sundown to sundown, to unplug, unwind, relax and do things other than using today’s technology, electronics, and social media. Disconnecting or unplugging from all the digital static offers us an opportunity to reset. It also allows us to make more human connections with the people around us.

Consider whether accepting this challenge might make an impact on your family.

SERVICE MATTERS
Click HERE to find out more about how Students Shoulder to Shoulder gives students in grades 8-12 the opportunity to learn about the principle of ethical leadership from inspiring nonprofit leaders. Students discover the complexity of global challenges by working and learning alongside our trusted partners while immersed in the communities they serve.

Saints, please remember to log your required Service Hours. Use your creativity to find new ways to serve in our community during Covid - reach out to neighbors, teachers, etc. and ask how you can help out.
