Greetings! Enjoy our Saints News!
HEAD OF SCHOOL MUSINGS
I’ll have to admit I was pulling for Gonzaga to have a perfect season, beat Baylor, and win a national championship. I was also cheering for Point Guard Jalen Suggs who played high school ball for Minnehaha Academy where I cut my teeth as a young principal. But Baylor dominated from tip-off to the final buzzer and put an exclamation point on their season with an 86-70 win.

What was Baylor Coach Scott Drew’s secret sauce throughout his 28-2 season? A culture of JOY – Jesus, Others, Yourself. At a school like Baylor, Drew said, “he enjoys the freedom he has to publicly share his Christian faith and incorporate Christian ideas and practices into the program.” That culture rubbed off on Baylor star Jared Butler who explained, “It’s joy; it’s fun.”

Families, nations, companies, and schools most often thrive and achieve top results when they prioritize others before self. Consider the U.S. Air Force Academy with its motto – ‘Service before self’ or Amazon – ‘the earth’s most customer-centric company.’ These are inspiring mottos and missions, but for what higher purpose? That’s where Coach Drew’s JOY slogan – with Jesus first – puts the ‘icing on the cake.’

Although we’re far from perfect and our priorities can get skewed at times, at VCHS, like with Baylor basketball, we strive to place our Christian faith – a commitment to Jesus Christ – as our first priority. When we get that right, real joy and real success follow. Like Coach Drew, we also aim to “incorporate Christian ideas and practices” into everything we do – to love God first and then to love our neighbors (our students, parents, alumni, faculty/staff, friends, etc.) like ourselves. True love flows from its source.

What are your priorities? Are you experiencing joy? Are you living JOY? It’s never too late to move the dial, reallocate priorities, and place first things first.

BRAVOS!
So Fresh and So Green, Green
Bravos to this collaborative effort between the science department and Rustic Farm to Fork!

Chelsea Rummenie, owner of Rustic Farm to Fork, is helping to green up our school! After brainstorming with Mollie Ritsch and Mrs. Hixon about environmental awareness and sustainability, Chelsea attended a compost seminar at Walking Mountains Science Center. There, she was inspired to start composting in order to reduce waste and decrease greenhouse gas emissions by reducing our dependence on landfills. Chelsea has also purchased a hydroponic tower to create a garden of healthy greens. Mrs. Hochtl incorporated the growing into her curriculum and her science students assisted in planting the seeds. Check out the sprouting kale, arugula and microgreens that will become fully grown plants in the weeks to come. Our efforts continue toward sustainability with zero waste classrooms next year and moving away from single use items at lunch service. Stay tuned for more photos of the progress of the tower garden.
Wacky Tacky week is in full swing. Don't forget to show your Saints Spirit Friday to wind up a fun week. Thank you to STUCO for all the hard work. We will highlight the competitions and silliness in next week's edition of Saints News.

HEALTHY MIND & SPIRIT
10 Ways to Build and Preserve Better Boundaries

Boundaries are essential to healthy relationships and, really, a healthy life. Setting and sustaining boundaries is a skill. Unfortunately, it’s a skill that many of us don’t learn, according to psychologist and coach Dana Gionta, Ph.D. We might pick up pointers here and there from experience or through watching others. But for many of us, boundary-building is a relatively new concept and a challenging one.
