It’s rare for a school to be in the position in which VCHS now finds itself – fully staffed and ready to go with all teachers and most head coaches for the upcoming school year. With the very real national and local teacher shortage (as well as recruiting high quality, Christian teachers), this is a feat, and one in which I thank God. Let me introduce you to some new members of the VCHS family.
Well, I guess Jim Pyke isn’t new, per se. He spent a year away from us and then realized how much he missed students. Mr. Pyke taught VCHS Computer Science courses from 2016-2022, and next school year will teach AP Computer Science Principles and Cybersecurity. Over time, he hopes to further grow Computer Science course offerings. Mr. Pyke holds a BA in Math from CU-Boulder and a Masters of Computer Information Systems from Colorado State University. When asked about how he plans to integrate the Christian faith into the daily experiences of his students, he said, “Computer Science can sometimes consist of ethical ambiguity and is often viewed without a Christian influence, but I like to use faith as a way to guide my students when confronted with ethical crossroads.”
Savannah Webster will split her time between VCHS and Young Life. With Young Life, she will serve Up Valley high school students. At VCHS, Ms. Webster will teach one Math course and coach two sports (see below). She holds a BS in Education (Math emphasis) from Baylor University. When asked how she plans to integrate the Christian faith into the daily experiences of her students, she said, “I find it easy to integrate faith into math because of the way God has so intricately created number systems. There’s always a solution to math problems and there are so many math puzzles that fit together perfectly – showing God’s perfection.”
Kris Wiebe is no stranger to the local education scene, including two years at BMHS (Biology and Chemistry) and now completing her 9th year at ECCA (Science and Math). She’s excited to teach at a Christian school and said this about faith integration – “I’ve noticed that some of my students struggle to balance faith and science. As a child, I had the same struggles, but I agree with the great scientist Johannes Kepler who said that learning science is like uncovering the hand of God. I try to remember Micah 4:12 – ‘but they do not know the thoughts of the Lord, nor understand His plan.’ As God’s children on this earth, we cannot know His true plan completely, but it’s fun to uncover small bits of it through science.” Ms. Wiebe holds a BS in Wildlife Biology from CSU and a MA in Secondary Education from the University of Phoenix.
