Greetings! Enjoy our Saints News!
HEAD OF SCHOOL MUSINGS
Calling for Parent Volunteers

We’re off to a terrific start and many exciting events lie ahead. To pull them off well we need parent support. Over the last 17 months we haven’t been able to have parent-parent community and parent-school connectivity the way we used to. COMMUNITY is a VCHS hallmark. Let’s rebuild it. There’s no better way than to have parents plug in with other parents to help make this school year a great one! There are three tangible ways you can do that – right now:

First, help us ensure we have all the volunteers we need for the All-School Retreat at Crooked Creek Ranch from September 27th (depart at 12:00) through September 29th (return at 12:00). Without sufficient volunteers the retreat will not happen. Don’t let your Saint sway you with by asking you not to go "with" them. We need 32 drivers and 18 kitchen work crew volunteers. You can ensure your student that you won't be with them most of the time. Kitchen work crew is a great parent bonding activity. Thank you to the parents who have already signed up for this. Email Shannon O’Brien right away at shannonobrien@vchsweb.org to volunteer.

Second, we have several parents who have already volunteered to help plan this year’s fundraiser – LaughMingleDance. The event was originally scheduled for April 1, 2020, but the event had to be cancelled given the valley’s shutdown. We were so close – tickets sold, comedian committed, dance floor ready, etc. Much of the heavy-lifting has already been completed but we need to ‘dust off’ our plans and make the evening of October 1st one not to forget. Michael Jr. is ready to make us laugh with an almost 1-hour stand-up routine. We especially need 9th and 10th grade parents to join the planning committee but 11th and 12th grade parents are also welcome to volunteer. Email Steve O’Neil at soneil@vchsweb.org to serve on the planning committee. Tickets, silent auction items, sponsorship, and gift-in-kind opportunities will be communicated soon.

Finally, our Parent Association (PA) is working hard to help with school spirit, build community, and support our teachers and students. Our Co-Chairs this year are Katie Rothenberg (Leo ’22, Maggie ’24) and Atlanta Meynier (Jeep ’24). Email them at parentassociation@vchsweb.org
to learn more about ways you might volunteer or support the PA’s efforts.

Let’s make it a great year – TOGETHER!

BRAVOS!
Jim Pyke brings incredible expertise to VCHS Computer Science Department

This comprehensive course covers all aspects of cyber security and ensures organizations and people are taking the necessary precautions to protect their interests. VCHS will benefit directly from improved identity protection and security of personal information.

With cyber crimes increasing it is important to educate students to identify threats and also give them an understanding as to how these threats can be minimized and mitigated.

The CISSP training covered:
  • Learning and applying the concepts of security and risk management
  • Gaining an understanding of security engineering to protect information by exploring and examining security models and frameworks
  • Learning how to identify, categorize and prioritize assets
  • Examination and security network architecture and its components
  • Learning how to identify and control access to protect assets
  • Designing and conducting security assessment strategies, logging and monitoring activities
  • Developing a recovery strategy and maintaining operational resilience
  • Learn how to secure the software development cycle

These will apply to AP Computer Science Principles and also are an intricate part of the CyberPatriot program.

Way to go Mr. Pyke!
