Greetings! Enjoy our Saints News!
HEAD OF SCHOOL MUSINGS
During our Veterans Day Assembly we took time to honor and learn from two local Veterans, Lt. Col. Garrett Fonda and Lt. Col. Harvey Latson. We were reminded of one definition for a United States Veteran:

A Veteran is someone who, at one point in his or her life, wrote a blank check made payable to “The United States of America,” for an amount up to and including his or her life.

Although our VCHS military alumni do not hold Veteran status, we did take a moment to recognize and honor them for their commitment and service to our nation and to us.

  • PJ Dauphinais ’02 (Navy)
  • Ian Ryan ’10 (Navy, Walter Reed National Military Medical Center)
  • Wilhelm Eyrich ’10 (Army, Colorado National Guard)
  • Zach Farris ’17 (Air Force, Nuclear Security Team)
  • Isabelle Carlson ’18 (Villanova, Navy ROTC)
  • Tom Engleby ’18 (Air Force Academy)
  • Jake Nowicki ’18 (Norwich University, Army ROTC)
  • Micah Sharpe ’20 (Army, 10th Mountain Division)

By taking time out of our day to honor Veterans and pay tribute to our military alumni, I hoped to see at least two things happen: 1) increased awareness and admiration for Veterans who have made sacrifices on our behalf, and 2) reflection from our younger students to consider whether or not they might serve our nation in the same way as the alumni above: through ROTC, attending one of our nation’s prestigious Service Academies, or even enlisting.

May God continue to bless America as men and women continue to answer ‘the call’ and serve America and Americans through the United States Armed Forces!

BRAVOS!
CONGRATULATIONS TO '22 SAINT, ORION ADELMAN
FOR RANKING 8TH IN SAILING NATIONALS
VCHS Saint, Orion Adelman is a competitive sailboat racer, something he has been doing since he was 11 years old. Here are some fun facts about Orion's sailing:

  • He trains and races with the Annapolis Yacht Club in Annapolis, Maryland
  • Although most of Orion’s sailing takes place during the summer there are a few major regatta’s that take place during the school year
  • He mostly races in a boat called the C420. This boat is about 14 feet long and is sailed by a team of two people

Recently, Orion represented Annapolis Yacht Club in the Corinthian Cup, an annual tournament between the Annapolis Yacht Club and the St. Francis Yacht Club. This is a series of races where the first team to win 10 races wins the Cup.

  • Orion and his team won the Cup while racing in San Francisco Bay, with the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz as the backdrop
  • This was the first time Annapolis Yacht Club has won the event in San Francisco

Also this year, Orion placed 8th at the C420 US Nationals regatta. This race included over 150 boats with sailors ranging in age from 14-23, including some of the best college sailors in the country
Orion plans to continue his sailing career through college. He is actively talking with a number of college coaches about sailing on a college team and moving through the athlete recruitment process.

SERVICE MATTERS
SALVATION ARMY NEEDS YOU This Holiday Season!
The goal at the Salvation Army is to help our neighbors in need maintain their dignity and offer them hope while offering them a hand-up. One of the ways we do this during the holidays is to offer holiday food baskets and distribute them around the valley. This year we will be partnering with The Community Market to offer
shelf stable food, along with fresh fruits and vegetables, turkeys, and other festive holiday offerings.

Here are ALL the volunteer opportunities:
  • Wednesday, November 17th @ 4:00 p.m. We need strong people to help us unload and organize. This will take about 2-3 hours. Click here

  • Friday, November 19th @ 4:00 p.m. - 6 p.m. We need help moving the boxes into locations around the school for distribution. This will take 2 hours. Click here

  • Saturday, November 20th @ 8:30 a.m. we need help delivering food throughout the valley. Bring your family and take as many as you would like to deliver. Click here

  • Adopt one or more families.  Typically this means purchasing a small toy, gift card, or other items for a family in need. We provide you with all of the information and instructions. Click here

  • Food pantry help. Shifts are from 10:00-1:00 or 1:00-4:00 Monday-Friday. We need help receiving food, organizing and cleaning. Fun to do with friends or family. Children welcome with a parent present. You have to wear a mask while in the building. Click here

  • Ring the Bell. Great to do with friends, family, and pets! Pick a location, then a date and time on the sign up. Click here
