The Road to New Life

Our focus for much of last month was generosity; how we were created in the image of a generous God to live generously. We are now in the season of Lent, in which we prepare ourselves to observe and celebrate the ultimate expression of God’s generosity and love: the gift of the life, and especially the death and resurrection, of his son Jesus.

This Spring, I’m leading a study of Luke’s Gospel on Wednesday evenings. And one of the many interesting things about Luke’s Gospel is how, just about halfway through, Jesus “set his face towards Jerusalem.” In other words, he set his face towards his crucifixion and death. The second half of Luke’s Gospel is about how Jesus prepares his disciples for his death, as well as his actual death and resurrection. Half of Luke’s Gospel—and really, all of Jesus’ life—was a road to the cross; a road to death.

But it wasn’t just a road to death, it was also a Way to Life; for him and for us. Jesus’ death led to his new, resurrected life. Easter couldn’t have happened without Good Friday. In dying for us, Jesus enabled us, by dying to ourselves, to experience the same kind of life.

And so, as you probably already know, our sermon series for Lent is called “The Way of Life.” It might just as well be called the road to New Life. For the rest of this month, we’ll be walking that road with Jesus. And as he journeys towards his life-giving death, we, too, will be finding those things to which we must die so we can experience resurrection life. I hope you’ll join us.

-Pastor Tommy

We believe that healing happens in community, through learning about God's love and care for us and through sharing life alongside others who understand. At the same time, we know that in-person grief support groups are not always available or accessible, especially in rural areas and smaller churches where these resources may not currently be offered. This online group was created to fill that gap and to ensure that no one has to walk alone.

Join us for a free online grief group, open to everyone and anyone navigating grief and deep feelings. On Wednesdays for six weeks, we’ll meet bi-weekly from 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM, beginning March 11th.

Please share with your friends, church, and specifically invite those you know who are struggling with grief.
