This month concludes as usual with Memorial Day on the 30th of May. And as spring concludes, then the summer begins with a tribute to fallen soldiers. Have you ever wondered why we memorialize fallen solders as summer begins? The answer is because of spring flowers. The first memorial days were events in 1865 in both the South and North, by African-American and Caucasian people, only a month after the war between the states had ended. These somber celebrations quickly became an annual tradition; these “decoration days” were typically set for early summer, when people could access the most flowers to lay on headstones.
Decoration days helped a torn nation heal. People told—and retold—war stories, honored the feats of local heroes, reconciled with foes. After World War I, communities extended the holiday to honor all who died in military service, although the official national observance didn’t begin until 1971. This Memorial Day’s national moment of remembrance takes place at 3 p.m. local time. Make the time to say a prayer for those who have given us our freedom.

“I am an American; free born and free bred, where I acknowledge no man as my superior, except for his own worth, or as my inferior, except for his own demerit”—Theodore Roosevelt
Sincerely, your friend,
David Mosser
