2016 Rhone Update: This is a one-two knockout punch with the 2015 and 2016 Rhone vintages for both the North and South regions. 2016 turned out to be an ideal growing season with a summer that stretched into fall. The hot and dry season was complimented by cool summer nights, meaning the grapes had more hang time on the vine to fully develop and concentrate flavors. Some producers are comparing this vintage to some of the greatest, such as 1990, 1998 or 2007. These wines are powerhouses and will take on some time in the cellar yet still drink with the elegance you'd expect from this region.

Vacqueyras is a region in France's Southern Rhone Valley. It sits on the eastern bank of the Rhone river nestled in against what many consider its big brother, Gigondas. Originally part of the larger Cotes du Rhone region, but in 1990 the region was separated out due to its consistent ability to produce exceptional quality wines.
All wines produced in Vacqueyras are required by law to be made up of 50% Grenache. The reminder can be a mixture of the classic Rhone grapes such as Syrah and Mourvedre. These blending grapes give the winemakers the ability to help shape and construct the wine into a final product that often falls in the medium to full-bodied category and holds finesse.

Tasting Notes:
This juice is dark in the glass. You will find ripe blueberry and blackberry aromas with a touch of herbal notes, which is expected as it is named after Garrigue. Garrigue are the flowers that grow wild in Mediterranean climates. You can smell the herbal or floral notes from them as you drive around the Rhone region. More dark berry flavors on a rich and layered palate.

Drink this vintage over the next 6 or 8 years.

2016 Alain Jaume, Vacqueyras, Grande Garrigue

The Jaume brothers have produced a classic 2016 Vacqueyras Grande Garrigue based on 60% Grenache and the rest Mourvèdre, Syrah, and very old vine Cinsault. Dark fruits, garrigue, crushed rock-like minerality, and ample spice notes give way to an ultra-classic, balanced 2016 that has a great mid-palate and sweet tannin. Drink this layered, pleasure-bent effort over the coming 7-8 years."
