| | Bulk Items and White Goods Update | | |
More Items, New Fees!
Salem residents can now dispose of more kinds of bulky items at the curb!
The new fee for standard Bulk Item pickup (furniture, carpet, etc.) is $20. As before, you can schedule pickup of up to two items on your regular recycling day.
White Goods are bulk items that need to be collected separately for proper recycling. More items are now accepted for pickup as White Goods in Salem! Aside from dishwashers, dryers, and similar appliances, the category now also includes CRT- and Freon-containing appliances as well as mostly metal bulk items.
That means you can schedule a curbside pickup with Waste Management (WM) for ACs, computer monitors, dehumidifiers, freezers, refrigerators, and TVs, among other items. See flyer for more info.
The fee for White Goods is now $20. As before, pickup can be scheduled on White Goods Days only, typically once a month. Please see the City's Curbside Collection Calendar for White Goods Days.

Contact UTEC for Mattress
& Box Spring Pickups!
You're probably aware that mattresses and box springs can no longer be disposed of as trash. Now, the City of Salem is working with a new vendor, UTEC, to recycle mattresses and box springs.
To schedule a curbside pickup – available at $40 per unit – call UTEC at 978-856-3997 or visit UTEC's mattress recycling page.
No need for a mattress bag unless there is inclement weather on your curbside pickup date (or if the unit is contaminated). You can also reschedule your pickup or cover the mattress with a tarp.

On Facebook, go to Groups and search for Buy Nothing Salem, or Giving in Salem MA, to join one of the local, free swap groups.

Don’t buy new boxes!
Take advantage of U-Haul’s Take a Box, Leave a Box program to cut costs and waste. You can also ask at grocery stores and check with friends or online giving groups.
On the subject of boxes ...
Usable boxes can go back to U-Haul when you're done! For the leftovers, recycle by folding flat and placing them in your recycling or taking them to the transfer station.
Work that bag collection!
Mine your car’s trunk or backseat (or maybe a closet) for sturdy, lightweight bags. Zero cost, handy handles!

Keep Mercury Out of the Waste Stream!
A recent MassRecycle article reminds us that when mercury escapes into the environment and is inhaled or absorbed by living things, it can cause significant damage to the nervous system, immune system, kidneys, liver, and developing offspring. In freshwater and seawater, it can make its way into the food chain, from plankton through small fish, then to larger fish, and finally to humans and other predators who consume the fish.
In Salem, you can dispose of products containing mercury at the Department of Public Services at 5 Jefferson Ave. In addition, Home Depot on Traders Way accepts compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs), which contain mercury.
