The SalemRecycles Mission is to reduce trash tonnage in the City of Salem by increasing recycling, diverting reusable items, and motivating city stakeholders through education and information.

February Repair Cafe

Don’t throw away your broken item – bring it to the Repair Café! SalemRecycles will be hosting a Repair Café on Saturday, February 11th from 9am-12 noon at the Community Life Center at 401 Bridge Street.

Appointments are required and walk ins will not be accepted. Schedule an appointment by contacting Janelle Rolke at jrolke@salem.com or 978-619-5672.

Repair volunteers will be available to mend clothing, sew buttons, sharpen scissors and knives, tinker with or rewire electronics and lamps, diagnose computer issues, glue wooden furniture and ceramics, bicycle maintenance, and more.

Please keep in mind these services may change as we confirm volunteers. We hope to see you at this fun event where you can learn how to fix things and reduce your waste!

If you have a repair talent to share at an upcoming cafe, let Janelle know!

2022 Recycling Audit Results

Our recycling contamination rate, the percent of non-recyclable items placed in recycling bins, dropped to 8.1% in the 2022 waste audit! This is an improvement from 8.9% in 2020 and 8.3% in 2021.

Shown in the chart below are averages from the green recycling pickup days and blue recycling pick up days sampled by Waste

Management. To help lower the contamination rate even further for the 2023 audit, please remember: plastic film, food waste, scrap metal, and foam should not be placed in the recycling bin.

To recycle your Styrofoam, please join us at the

Styrofoam Recycling Event at Beverly High School on 1/14/23 from 10:00AM - 1:00PM

Valentine's Day Tips

CARDS:

Get creative with Valentine cards – Instead of buying a card that will likely end up in the trash, make your own unique cards using photos or other reusable or recyclable items around your home. You could also send an e-card instead of a paper card!

FLOWERS:

Compost when spent!

VASES:

Return to local florist!
