What We're Reading, Listening To & Watching

SalemRecycles' mission is to reduce trash tonnage in the City of Salem by increasing recycling, diverting reusable items, and motivating city stakeholders through education and information.

Styrofoam Recycling Event

Salem & Beverly are partnering again to host a Styrofoam Collection Event!

Hold on to your Styrofoam – the company “Save That Stuff” will collect it to recycle! Residents of Salem and Beverly may participate in this drive-through event at Beverly High School on Saturday, January 13, from 10 am to 1 pm.

Please bring only rigid white expanded polystyrene (Styrofoam). No packaging peanuts or food service containers such as meat trays, clamshells, or Styrofoam cups can be accepted.

While Styrofoam cannot be recycled curbside, Save That Stuff has densifiers that can process the material for recycling. We’re excited to offer residents a way to sustainably dispose of their Styrofoam!

Plastic Film Drop-Off Locations!

In an effort to keep plastic bags and other soft plastics out of the city's curbside recycle bins, Salem is now offering a new soft plastic recycling option!

In addition to bringing soft plastics to participating grocery stores, you can now bring clean, dry, soft plastics (photos below) to the following locations:

1) City Hall Annex, 98 Washington Street, 1st floor

2) Salem Public Library 370 Essex Street (main level near main entrance)

3) Community Life Center, 401 Bridge Street

Declutter 2024

If you've ever considered freeing your life and home from clutter, let 2024 be your year!

Clothing: Drop clothes in a nearby textile bin or schedule a pickup with Helpsy, offering free curbside service to Salem residents.

Household Items: Consider donating to the Lifebridge Thrift Shop, helping a neighbor via Giving in Salem (Facebook), or contacting the Essex County Habitat for Humanity (accepting appliances, cabinets, and more).

Children's Toys & Clothing: Check out community exchanges such as Salem Mamas (Facebook).

Extensive Clean-Outs: Need to empty or organize your attic or garage, or deal with an entire household of goods? Get help! Call Salem's To Do! Ta Done or another professional home organizer.

Remember:

  • When tackling clutter, take things slowly – one closet or drawer at a time.
  • Once you've decluttered a space, don't fill it with more things! Resolve to buy and use less in 2024!
