Transfer Station Reminders
Yard Waste & Cardboard Recycling
During the open season (April through December), Salem residents with proof of ID may drop off their yard waste and cardboard recycling at the Salem Transfer Station at 12 Swampscott Road. Drop-off hours are Saturdays, 7 am to 3 pm, and Sundays, 9 am to 5 pm.
Yard waste should be dropped off in a paper yard waste bag or dumped loose at the designated area on the site. Yard waste in plastic bags will not be accepted and stumps and branches greater than 2” in diameter will also not be accepted.
Excess cardboard recycling at the transfer station: To ensure that this program is successful, it is imperative that only clean, dry cardboard is brought to this location. Cardboard must be flattened.
If the cardboard boxes can be reused, please bring them to U-Haul Moving & Storage at 43 Jefferson Ave as they offer a “take a box, leave a box” reuse program.

The Global Plastics Pollution Treaty
On March 2, 2022, the United Nations approved a resolution to create the world’s first global plastics pollution treaty.
The UN resolution established an Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) to complete a legally binding global agreement by the end of 2024 to address the world's plastic pollution crisis, including the alarming increase in plastic waste in our oceans. To date, the INC has held four negotiation sessions around the globe, the most recent (INC-4) in Ottawa, Canada in April. A fifth negotiating session (INC-5) will begin in late November in South Korea.
Upon completion of the INC’s work, the UN will convene a conference to adopt its final draft of the agreement and open the treaty up for signatures.
The final agreement may include provisions addressing these and other solutions:
-
A reduction in plastics production
- The elimination of single-use plastics
- Extended producer responsibility (EPR) schemes requiring companies to manage their own product and packaging waste
How will the United States, as the world's leading plastic polluter, help to shape the final treaty? Environmental and health organizations are urging US Government officials to push for an ambitious agreement that will curb the growing damage resulting from the production, use, and irresponsible disposal of plastic products.
Watch a short video about the Global Plastics Treaty.
