Screening and Conversation with the Film Maker

5:30pm - 7:00pm Pavilion 201 Whatcom Community College
We'll be screening three short documentary films from Original Pursuit and Plumb productions about two iconic, threatened species of the Pacific Northwest: The Southern Resident Orcas, and the Chinook Salmon they need for survival.

October Orca Webinar
Save the date! In recognition of upcoming Orca Recovery Day, and Orca-tober, join us Wednesday Oct 15th at 4:30pm for a fantastic webinar about Southern Resident killer whale health assessments in the Salish Sea. Dr. Deborah Giles from SeaDoc Society and Dr. Holly Fearnbach from SR3 will be presenting on the exciting new technologies being used and the collaborative nature of these projects.
Hands Across the Water
Cindy Elliser, Associate Director of the Salish Sea Institute participated in the Hands Across the Water event (https://acrossthewater.org/), a 3 day flotilla from Orcas Island, Washington to Salt Spring Island, British Columbia in celebration of a joint declaration of friendship between the two islands. Cindy spoke on a panel about environmental resilience and working together to support a healthy Salish Sea. "It was such an inspiring event, seeing friends and strangers from across the border come together, share their stories, learn from each other and forge new connections."

The Last Couple of Weeks was both a Sobering and Exciting time in the Salish Sea.
On September 13th SRKW J36 (Alki) was observed carrying her deceased newborn female calf, less than 3 days old.
On September 19th J42 (Echo) was observed with a healthy newborn calf!
On September 15th and 16 a rare sighting : A fin whale was sighted on two different days! The last sighting of this species in the Salish Sea was in 2022. *Photo taken by Sophia Madden Outer Islands Excursions

In our most recent EI paper, Chloe Robinson writes about the insufficient protections afforded whales and their prey in the Salish Sea. Specifically for the Southern Resident killer whales who are facing extinction due to limited cross-border cooperation, gaps in legislative protection, and frameworks. However, enhanced protection of whales and their prey is possible within the Salish Sea with identifying and developing unified pathways.
