SSR Stainless Steel Digest
May 2019
Kevin here.

For those of you who were able to attend Construct Canada, Canadian Concrete Expo, World of Concrete, or The Precast Show, we were very happy to meet you for the first time and share memories with friends. Thank you for stopping by our booth when we attended events as an exhibitor.

Our move to larger space in Buffalo to accommodate new equipment and product has worked well to improve our services and product reach throughout the USA and Canada. In each of our annual newsletters, we highlight a selection of projects. This Issue of SSR Stainless Steel Digest focuses on bridges where stainless steel reinforcement was specified. Although we receive numerous orders for transportation structures, we do supply projects that include h ospital and medical clinic MRI's; l ight rail transit; piers; wharves; tunnels; and, industrial facilities.

We have one more show where we will be exhibiting this spring. I will be at the International Bridge Conference in Maryland June 10-12. Let me know if you plan to attend by visiting our events page on Facebook or mailing me at kcornell@stainlessrebar.com. I am there to discuss projects, share technical information, and have a little fun with friends.

Stainless steel reinforcement specified for new I-74 Mississippi River Bridge
Moline, Illinois to Bettendorf, Iowa

The I-74 Mississippi River Bridge project is part of an overall plan to improve the I-74 corridor from Moline, Illinois to Davenport, Iowa. Through 2019, construction is taking place between Avenue of the Cities in Moline and Middle Road in Bettendorf. The project includes the replacement of the I-74 bridges over the Mississippi River as well as interchange ramp redesign and local roadway improvements.

Bridge construction includes:
  • Construct a bridge along a new alignment east of the existing bridge
  • Roadway and aesthetic lighting on and underneath the bridge structures
  • A pedestrian/bike path, including a scenic overlook on the eastbound bridge with connections to paths in Bettendorf and Moline
  • An elevator in Bettendorf for increased access to connecting path
With a narrow width and lack of shoulders, the existing bridge is a major contributor to local congestion problems. The Iowa and Illinois departments of transportation improved the situation with additional travel lanes, improvements to interchanges and intersections, and other improvements.
The Quad Cities ( Davenport,  Bettendorf,  Rock Island Moline , and  East Moline)  are growing, and the Iowa and Illinois departments of transportation want to bring the public a safer commute, better designed interchanges and a more reliable travel experience.

Kosciusko Bridge Phase 2 update
Brooklyn, New York

Phase 2 construction of the westbound new bridge is well underway. The new Phase 1 eastbound bridge, which carries both directions of traffic, opened ahead of schedule on April 27, 2017.

The Kosciusko Bridge Replacement is the largest single contract in the history of the NYSDOT and the first cable-stayed bridge in New York City. Being built in two phases, the first was completed with opening of a new eastbound bridge in 2017. The second began in the fall 2017 with demolition of the westbound bridge and construction of the westbound bridge beginning in the spring, 2018.

Salit Specialty Rebar supplied 1600 ton of XM-28, a high manganese low nickel austenitic stainless steel, strengthened by extra nitrogen present in solid solution. XM-28 provides a cost advantage without adversely affecting corrosion resistance. High nitrogen provides higher tensile strength and yield strength without adversely affecting elongation and reduction in area (ductility) or non-magnetic properties.

The project is being completed as a traditional design-bid-build project, with WSP providing final design services. The structure includes a single-tower cable-stayed main span and prestressed girder approach spans.

The New York State Department of Transportation decided to replace in full the aging Kosciuszko Bridge which carries the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (I-278) over Newtown Creek, connecting Brooklyn and Queens. At $555 million, the Kosciusko Bridge Replacement is the largest single contract in the history of the NYSDOT and is the first cable-stayed bridge in New York City. The new crossing has been designed for a 100-year service life.

Stainless steel reinforcement specified for I-35W over the Minnesota River
Burnsville and Bloomington, Minnesota

A structurally sound bridge crossing over the Minnesota River is needed within the I-35W corridor. The replaced bridge, constructed in 1957 was reaching the end of its design life.  Substantial maintenance needs were anticipated requiring extensive levels of investment.

Salit Specialty Rebar supplied 500 tons of 2304 Duplex | UNS-S32304 stainless steel for reinforcement of bridge elements. 2304 Duplex is a lean duplex stainless steel that has a microstructure consisting of austenite and ferrite phases. This duplex microstructure and the chemical composition results in an excellent combination of strength and corrosion resistance.

Baudette/Rainy River International Bridge replacement
City of Baudette, Minnesota and Highway 11, Town of Rainy River, Ontario

The Baudette/Rainy River International Bridge provides a connection between United States and Canadian full-service, 24-hour Port of Entry facilities. Constructed in 1959, the bridge was reaching the end of its design life after 2010 and classified by MnDOT as structurally deficient.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT), along with its partner, the Ministry of Transportation Ontario (MTO) is replacing the existing bridge with a new structure located on a new alignment immediately upstream of the existing bridge. The project includes reconstruction of the U.S. and Canadian approaches to tie into the existing roadway on Trunk Highway 72 in the City of Baudette and Highway 11 in the Town of Rainy River.

During the summer of 2019, the contractor will use a crane on the temporary causeway into the Rainy River on the Minnesota side. This will give crews a working space to construct the bridge abutment and first river pier. During spring and summer, 2019,  the contractor will be constructing, concrete piers.

Salit Specialty Rebar and Rhino Mechanical Connections Dealer Agreement

Rhino Mechanical Connections  specializes in engineered mechanical steel connections for the commercial concrete construction business. Mechanical splices do not rely on concrete and offer greater strength, toughness and dynamic performance during seismic or man-made events.

RHINO Mechanical splices are a taper-threaded splicing system that assures a positive locking connection and provides continuity and structural integrity to reinforced concrete construction. RHINO spliced bars behave as continuous lengths of reinforcing steel bars by providing full strength in tension, compression and stress reversal applications. RHINO Mechanical splices reduce congestion and are ideal for fast and easy rebar placing when using sliding or climbing formwork.

Stainless steel welded wire mesh mats for resilient infrastructure

Standard-sized stainless steel welded wire mesh mats were introduced by Salit Specialty Rebar to the poured-in-place and precast concrete markets in the USA and Canada to facilitate precast concrete production and lower costs of construction.

The product is available in two different styles of mesh produced using two different alloys. One product is 6X6 D2.9/D2.9 (gage) that would be assembled in 6-foot x 12-foot mats. The other product is 4X4 D4/D4 (gage) available as 6-foot x 12-foot mats. These sizes are the most popular in carbon mesh. All stainless wire mesh is branded with "SALIT" so buyers know that the wire mesh they are using is from a source in the Salit Group of Companies.
