Salit Specialty Rebar is complying with ANSI/CRSI-IPG4.1 and has passed its first audit.

The Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute (CRSI) Standard Practice for Stainless Steel Reinforcing Bar Fabrication Facilities (ANSI/CRSI-IPG4.1) defines quality processes for fabrication of stainless steel reinforcing bars. Processes encompass the development and use of a fabrication quality manual, proper personnel training, inspection criteria, handling and storage, fabrication, and shipping to job sites.

Performance requirements have been added in which rated load capacities are assigned to a reinforcement support, based on the ability of the support to meet minimum requirements of load test, impact test, water absorption criteria and concrete consolidation test.

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) accredited the Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute (CRSI) as a Standards Development Organization (SDO) in April 2013. The scope of CRSI's standards activities includes the development and maintenance of consensus standards for design, detailing, fabrication, placement, and construction of assemblies consisting of steel reinforcement and associated products used in concrete and masonry construction.

Stainless steel rebar specified on Kosciusko Bridge (Phase 2)
Brooklyn, New York

The Kosciusko Bridge Replacement is the largest single contract in the history of the NYSDOT and the first cable-stayed bridge in New York City. Being built in two phases, the first was completed with opening of a new eastbound bridge in 2017. The second began in the fall 2017 with demolition of the westbound bridge and construction of the westbound bridge beginning in spring, 2018.

Salit Specialty Rebar supplied 1,600 ton of XM-28, a high manganese low nickel austenitic stainless steel, strengthened by extra nitrogen present in solid solution. XM-28 provides a cost advantage without adversely affecting corrosion resistance. High nitrogen provides higher tensile strength and yield strength without adversely affecting elongation and reduction in area (ductility), or non-magnetic properties.

The project is being completed as a traditional design-bid-build project, with WSP providing final design services. The structure includes a single-tower cable-stayed main span and prestressed girder approach spans.

The New York State Department of Transportation decided to replace in full the aging Kosciuszko Bridge which carries the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (I-278) over Newtown Creek, connecting Brooklyn and Queens. The new $555 million crossing has been designed for a 100-year service life.

Patterson Plank Road Bridge Deck
North Bergen, New Jersey

The Route 495, Route 1&9/Paterson Plank Road bridge deck was in poor condition and the structural framing and supporting piers had areas of severe corrosion and section loss until the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) started the major rehabilitation project. The purpose was to restore the structural integrity of the bridge, extend the service life for an estimated 75 years, and minimize the need for emergency repairs, which impact traffic operating conditions.

SSR supplied 625 ton of Duplex 2205 which is a nitrogen-enhanced duplex stainless steel used for common corrosion problems encountered with the 300 series stainless steels. "Duplex" describes a family of stainless steels that are neither fully austenitic, like 304 stainless, nor purely ferritic, like 430 stainless. Duplex 2205 is the most widely used grade in the duplex family of stainless steels.

The project is rehabilitating the nine-span viaduct including repairs and reconstruction of the concrete bridge deck, and the westbound exit ramps to Route 1&9 southbound and Paterson Plank Road northbound. The deck replacement required multiple stages to maintain traffic while structural repairs are performed to replace and strengthen deteriorated structural steel. The $90.3 million state-funded project began in September 2017 with local street improvements. The entire project is expected to be completed in summer, 2021.
Salt Bayou Bridge
Slidell, Louisiana

State of Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (LaDOTD) specifications for the Salt Bayou Bridge project included, among other elements, removal of the bridge and replacement with a concrete slab span bridge.

Salit Specialty Rebar supplied 100 ton of 316LN, a low carbon, nitrogen-enhanced version of Type 316 molybdenum-bearing austenitic stainless steel. The Type 316 alloys are more resistant to general corrosion and pitting/crevice corrosion than the conventional chromium-nickel austenitic stainless steels such as Type 304.

Frequently Asked Questions about Stainless Steel Reinforcing Bars - CSRI Technical Note ETN M-2-18

Stainless steel reinforcing bars are experiencing increased use in reinforced concrete projects because of the material's inherent properties, which depending upon the chemistry specified, may include corrosion resistance, low magnetic permeability, ductility, or a combination of all of these characteristics.

CRSI's Technical Note ETN M-2-18 presents a collection of questions that are asked from engineers and architects, inspectors, code enforcement personnel, contractors, and state Departments of Transportation.

Melc Flexiline 25x4 straightening and cutting machine
The Melc Flexiline 25x4 straightening and cutting machine from Germany's EUROBEND GmbH was scheduled for commissioning in September. Delivery of the unit was delayed until November 2018 when it is expected to be commissioned. The machine that straightens from coil, stainless steel rebar up to #8 (25mm in diameter) will be used exclusively for supplying bridge decks.

EUROBEND has been involved for more than two decades in the manufacturing of advanced technology machinery. The company produces fully automated electronically controlled machines for straightening, cutting and bending of all types of steel wire (smooth, deformed, recessed or rebar) mesh welding, and mattress-making.

Stainless steel welded wire mesh mats for resilient infrastructure

Standard-sized stainless steel welded wire mesh mats were introduced by Salit Specialty Rebar to the poured-in-place and precast concrete markets in the USA and Canada to facilitate precast concrete production and lower costs of construction.

The product is available in two different styles of mesh produced using two different alloys. One product is 6X6 D2.9/D2.9 (gage) that would be assembled in 6-foot x 12-foot mats. The other product is 4X4 D4/D4 (gage) available as 6-foot x 12-foot mats. These sizes are the most popular in carbon mesh. All stainless wire mesh is branded with "SALIT" so buyers know that the wire mesh they are using is from a source in the Salit Group of Companies.

2304 Duplex |UNS-S32304 Stainless rebar adds to the design life of structures

2304 Duplex |UNS-S32304 stainless is a lean duplex stainless steel that has a microstructure consisting of austenite and ferrite phases. This duplex microstructure and the chemical composition of 2304 Duplex stainless results in an excellent combination of strength and corrosion resistance.

The high strength capability of minimum yield strength of 75 ksi (518 MPa) for 2304 Duplex stainless rebar is an added economical advantage. In the annealed and hot rolled conditions, 2304 Duplex stainless is ferromagnetic.

2304 Duplex stainless possesses good resistance to general corrosion in many acid environments, chloride stress corrosion cracking, pitting and crevice corrosion.

Applications
Specific rebar applications include bridge decks, barrier and retaining walls, anchoring systems and dowels, chemical plant infrastructure, coastal piers and wharves, bridge parapets, sidewalks and bridge pilings. Another application for 2304 Duplex stainless includes bridge tie wire.
