''God's dream is that you and I and all of us will realize  that we are family,
that we are made for togetherness, for goodness, and for compassion .''

- Desmond Tutu

Dear Friends of SSGWI,

Congratulations! We have successfully accomplished phase 1 of our project. This year marks construction of 43 homes. Phase II involves providing water and drainage facilities to these houses.

Additionally, 8 children in the village have completed the Quran, and the elementary school is running well. SSGWI continued the tradition of distributing Ramadan rations to all the families in our village Sulaiman Mallah; clothes were also given to the womenfolk for Eid.  We provided utensils to all 43 homes. SSGWI took care of wedding expenses for two families.  I visited the village frequently between 2014-2017 to personally supervise construction work. It was a relief to see that all the villagers were healthy and did not need any medical assistance. Previously, during my visits, I would handle 2-3 sick children and an adult in each family. It appears that providing regular health education to the villagers has improved the health and wellbeing of the villagers remarkably.

Junaid Jamshed's sons Taimur and Babur, with Salman and Sherjan at the Hum TV Awards in Lahore, Pakistan (2017)

On December 7th, 2016 we lost our beloved friend and brother Junaid Jamshed. His plane crashed as he was traveling from Chitral to Islamabad. Salman and I have shared a major part of our life with him, and we were totally devastated.
Our boys went to the same school in the 90's. Salman decided to involve Junaid's sons Taimur and Babur, and our son Sherjan, in a music medley to pay tribute to Junaid's legacy. The performance took place on Hum TV Awards, and will be aired globally on Eid day. Currently Salman is giving music lessons to Junaid's children.

Salman gave a tribute to one of Pakistan's most influential figures JJ, through the short film  Khwab (directed by Imraan Ahmad Khan).

Abu Dhabi Art & Culture Summit 2017 with Noura Al Kaabi Minister of State UAE

    April 7th 2017
We were invited to the Abu Dhabi Art & Culture Summit 2017. There were 80 participating       countries in a groundbreaking event lead by Mohammad Al Mubarak (Chairman, Abu             Dhabi Tourism & Cultural Authority) . We were part of a remarkable group of international
cultural leaders. Their aim was to explore how artists, art administrations, media                     leaders technological innovations, policymakers, and philanthropists can work together       to address issues of common concern and develop action items that can make the world       a better place. The Summit focused on issues like women's empowerment, climate                 change, combating violent extremism, new technologies, and education.

SSGWI and Polio Eradication Work in Pakistan

Salman is the Pakistan Polio ambassador for Rotary International since 2014.

Both of us have visited various educational institutes in Pakistan and organized polio awareness meetings/seminars titled ''Sehatmand Pakistan'' ( Overcoming all health challenges!!)
The purpose was to educate people about polio.  We visited Punjab University, NICH, Preston University, PAF chapter in Karachi, LUMS, Karachi City School, Habib University, and UET.

When Salman started his polio work in Pakistan, the number of cases were 306, we are happy to announce that only 2 cases of polio remain in 2017.

We are very close to eradicating polio from our planet.  SSGWI has used media (social, print, & video) and the arts (poetry, music, & film) to spread awareness of this disabling disease. We have tried to engage the Pakistani diaspora globally for their support and involvement. In Pakistan we have regular meetings with Pakistan National Polio Plus Committee headed by Chairman Aziz Memon, Rotary, Federal & Provincial Health Ministries, UNICEF, WHO, regional and community based partners, and many others who are working on the ground doing exemplary work.

Salman was invited to Harvard Pakistan Forum 2017 in April to deliver a keynote address and spoke about our health and education projects in Pakistan.

SSGWI Women's Wellness Initiative

We started SSGWI Women's Wellness Initiative in 2008 in Mansehra to educate girls. We adopted Spring Public School and started our project in a small space. However, a couple of years ago we moved to a bigger and better location. The program is running very well, the girls are given education till grade 12, and they are also given vocational training so that after completing their studies they feel empowered!

NEXT STEPS

SSGWI will be launching ''Water For Life'' initiative in Fall 2017.
We plan on installing water pumps in remote villages where there is scarcity of clean drinking water. SSGWI will also embark on completing phase 2 of the model village project (water and drainage facilities for the homes). Repair work will also be done where needed.

Since 2008 we have been supporting underprivileged artists in Pakistan, one of them has composed unforgettable melodies for Pakistani cinema for almost 5 decades but now lives in a slum.

SSGWI will continue the ART project (Aman, Rozi, Taleem), its mission is to sponsor orphans and other underprivileged community members to get affordable education, jobs, and access to health facilities, thereby allowing them to live a life of dignity.

We registered SSGWI Trust in Pakistan in 2015 for all our friends and family who showed interest in donating to our projects from Pakistan. We will be sharing information on how you can donate to SSGWI Trust.
