Weekly Newsletter 10/04/24
Hello Salmon Bay Families!
We have had another fabulous week!
For those of you who do not know, I was the Assistant Principal at Salmon Bay K-8 two years ago before assuming the role of interim principal for one year at an SPS middle school last year. I have returned this year and look forward to the school year ahead.
Please Note:
School Closure: This week we received news that our school will not be closing next year.
Curriculum Night: Parents/guardians thank you for coming out! Excellent attendance!
Thank you to teachers and staff for an evening of well-organized presentations and for creating an inviting atmosphere.
A huge thank you also to teacher Sam Olson and WEB student leaders for your participation during curriculum night.
Halloween: Some of you may already be in the process of planning costumes to celebrate Halloween. Please be mindful that we do not discourage students from dressing in a costume. However, we are mindful of the fact that some do not celebrate Halloween and the need to avoid major classroom disruptiveness. Regarding our school climate and culture, we ask that students not wear masks, facial or head attire that prevents identification, and that costumes are easy to navigate the day of instruction and movement. Last and not least, we ask that representation of blood and gore be avoided. In the front lobby of our school, there is a wardrobe of costumes for the taking. If you have costumes to donate, please bring them.
All for now,
Evie Taylor
Assistant Principal

Wed, November 6th & 13th 6-8pm - Screenagers, Salmon Bay Cafetorium
We live in a digital world where technological advancement and their integration in our lives grows deeper and faster each day. The nation, and indeed the world, is rallying around the growing recognition that social media and excessive screen time are contributing to serious mental health concerns among our youth. To address this, we must focus on prevention by learning the latest research, establishing good habits, and setting boundaries at school and home early on. FOSB’s PIE Committee and select Salmon Bay K-8 staff invite our community to join us for a viewing and post-discussion of Screenagers - the original version focused on middle- and high-schoolers on November 6, and the newest elementary version on November 13 in the cafetorium. Questions, suggestions, or time to help? Contact Sylvia Loh.

Native Youth Reading Challenge
Jenny Miller (Native American Family Support Worker) and Mai Takahashi (Childrens Service Librarian) recently shared an amazing opportunity for our Native Students at Salmon Bay. They are hoping to collaborate with neighborhood schools to participate in the Daybreak Star field trip on October 18.
Elementary students will spend about two hours at Daybreak Star, paired with high school students for near-peer mentorship. To ensure students are excused from school and able to participate, please reach out to Lara Cowles for:
- Field trip permission forms.
- Transportation arrangements or paperwork.
- Any other planning or coordination needs
Background:
Native educators from various districts and NPOs in Western Washington have come together to form a non-profit called the United Indians of All Tribes Educators Consortium (UIATEC), with support from the United Indians of All Tribes Foundation (UIATF). UIATEC's goal is to empower Native youth across Western Washington and provide them with cultural exposure. Through this initiative, high school students will have the opportunity to develop leadership skills by planning and hosting events and leadership training.
The Reading Program:
We’re launching a Native Youth Reading Challenge. It will be similar to the Global Reading Challenge but with a cooperative reading log format. Our aim is to earn 1 million points together by reading books, attending library programs, and participating in community gatherings featuring books by Native authors. The challenge is modeled after the Cleveland Reads Program. We’ve also acquired the Beanstalk app for tracking reading progress.
We’ll kick off the challenge with an event at Daybreak Star in Seattle on October 18, where books will be distributed. Participants can then start logging their reading either digitally through the app or on physical paper. The program will keep going and we’ll collect and update the total minutes read each month and celebrate our progress with another event in March as a final of this program .
Reading lists at SPL (similar list will be available at KCLS, Sno-Isle, Pierce, and other library systems via Beanstalk App):
Please contact Mai Takahashi (Children's Service Librarian) with any questions about the program. Contact Lara Cowles if your child would like to participate.

Please remember to have your kids check the lost & found periodically - there's already a full rack, and more comes in daily!

Unclaimed items will be kept for our community and/or donated to a local charity. Have questions, suggestions, or time to help? Contact Direct Giving Co-Chair, Chase Treisman.

Save the Date: Fall Direct Giving Drive Starts Friday, November 1-22
FOSB’s Fall Direct Giving Drive is slated for November 1-22. The goal is to raise $84K to fully fund FOSB-supported school-related expenses this year. The money supports scholarships, camps and after-school-programs, teacher appreciation activities, stipends for the school nurse and volunteer coordinator, school advocacy efforts, parent information exchange programs, racial equity efforts, and community building initiatives, among others. Individual donations and corporate matching of any size is welcome. Keep an eye out in future newsletters, emails, and backpacks for more information on ways to give. Have questions, suggestions, or time to help? Contact Direct Giving Co-Chair, Liila Woods.
“Let’s make this the best year yet!”

We are inspired by Alok Vaid-Menon’s quotation of prioritizing “compassion over comprehension,” and we want to help create a space where people can be imperfect, ask difficult questions, and make mistakes, all while focusing on fostering relationships and repairing harm when harm occurs. Our goal is to transform schools so that queer and trans youth and adults can be their authentic selves without fear. This work is deeply personal for us; it’s about surviving in a world that often overlooks trans people and healing our inner child who couldn’t fully express themselves until later in life. We are dedicated to building community and ensuring that future generations of trans and queer individuals feel welcomed, supported, and able to thrive. To start, we’ve developed and designed this gathering to foster meaningful change within our educational environments.
Event Details:
Date: October 19, 2024
Time: 10-12pm PST
Location: Online (Zoom link will be provided closer to event date)
Language: English (English Closed Captions available through Zoom captions)
The session will primarily be delivered through English spoken language, but one of our facilitators is a Spanish speaker and can elaborate content in Spanish as needed (continuous interpretation is not available at this time)
Our aim is to co-create and co-facilitate a community gathering space to not only deepen political analysis on the intersections of racism, gender, sexuality, and other identities and lived experiences, but to also strategize on ways in which we can create inclusive spaces within our communities for queer and trans youth to thrive beyond survival. Our goal is to move beyond mere allyship and engage in practical, effective measures that can be implemented within our schools.
Highlights of the Event:
Facilitators with Lived Experiences: As queer and trans people of color working within the DEI industrial complex, we are committed to grounding our work in transformative justice principles and decolonizing practices.
Interactive Session: Participate in hands-on session designed to equip you with practical tools and strategies for fostering inclusive environments.
Peer Discussions: Engage in thought-provoking discussions with other educators, advocates, and community members about the challenges and opportunities in creating more inclusive and welcoming spaces.
Why Attend? This event is an opportunity to deepen your understanding of the needs and experiences of queer and trans students and educators and to gain practical insights that can drive positive change in your school or community. Your participation will contribute to a collective effort to ensure that all students feel seen, valued, and supported.
How to Register: Please secure your spot by registering through the following link.
As spaces are limited, register soon to ensure your participation. Should you have any questions or need further information, please do not hesitate to reach out. You can contact us directly at queeringliberation@gmail.com.
