Weekly Newsletter 10/11/24

Hello Salmon Bay Families!

It has been a busy week; we have started buddy classroom visits. On Thursday kindergarteners went up to meet their 6th grade buddies. The spent time getting to know each other and decorating a real pumpkin, so fun!

The book fair was a huge hit! Thank you, Corinna and all the parent volunteers that have come, in to support. One of the books I found is called “The Dragon Bakery”. I cannot wait to read it to students at school and my own grandkids! I hope your children found some awesome books as well. Corinna did a fantastic job in finding books for the whole range of K-8 students!

Halloween:  Some of you may already be in the process of planning costumes to celebrate Halloween. Please be mindful that we do not discourage students from dressing in a costume. However, we are mindful of the fact that some do not celebrate Halloween and the need to avoid major classroom disruptiveness. Regarding our school climate and culture, we ask that students not wear masks, facial or head attire that prevents identification, and that costumes are easy to navigate the day of instruction and movement. We ask that representation of different cultures along with blood and gore be avoided.

In the front lobby of our school, there is a wardrobe of costumes for the taking. If you have costumes to donate, please bring them. We appreciate all the donations so far and one parent asked if we take costumes for adults as well, and that would be yes.

Lastly, LOST AND FOUND, our collection of items is growing fast, please stop by and claim any items that may belong to your child.

Have a great weekend!

Ms. Dixon

News From the Library:

Book Fair:

THANK YOU to all the volunteers for their hard work during the book fair. I don't know what our commission is yet, but it has been very successful. Also, THANK YOU for supporting and your patience as we work through a clunky system with lack of WIFI and such.

Author Visit 10/23 for Elementary Students:

I am so excited to announce that I have arranged for an author visit with Dion Leonard for elementary students on Wednesday, Oct. 23 from 9:15-10:00ish. The community is welcome to come. In addition, this presentation does include "Gobi" the dog coming to school. He will be on a leash and is well trained. Please let us know if you have any questions/concerns about this.

Here is the book order form.

(It is very helpful to have this prepared and turned in before the presentation.)

Find out more about the author and story here.

In addition, we are able to fund this visit with the use of funds from Spring Auction 2024. So much gratitude to the community and FOSB for this.

Questions? Email Corinna Wright, Teacher-Librarian

Notes From the Nurse:

  • Please keep your child home if they are sick. Also, please do not give them sickness medication prior to school, as this medication will wear off while at school and symptoms will return
  • Your child CANNOT self-carry medication (even over-the counter medication) unless approved by me. Your child cannot TAKE medication (even over-the-counter medication) at school without the proper forms in place
  • Here is a link for COVID/Respiratory Illness guidelines.
  • Children can easily catch lice through contacts with friends at school, home and in the community. Finding lice early makes it easier to get rid of them. Doing regular head checks on your children is your best defense!

I am at Salmon Bay every Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Please reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns, or if I can be of further assistance. I look forward to partnering with you and your child!

Nurse Suzanne

Attendance:

The school day begins at 8:55am for K-8th grade. Students should be in their classroom ready to begin work when the school day begins. If your student arrives after 8:55 they will need to stop by the office to sign in and get a tardy slip.

To report your child absent, please email us at salmonbay.attendance@seattleschools.org or call us at 206-252-1728. When reporting your child absent, please include first and last name and the nature of your student’s absence.

Planned absences can be excused for medical appointments, religious or other one-time events. Family vacations or family trips during regular school days are not excused.

If your student is planning to ride home with another student who is assigned to a bus route, a temporary transportation pass (Yellow Card) must be obtained through our school office. We live in a digital world where technological advancement and their integration in our lives grows deeper and faster each day. The nation, and indeed the world, is rallying around the growing recognition that social media and excessive screen time are contributing to serious mental health concerns among our youth. To address this, we must focus on prevention by learning the latest research, establishing good habits, and setting boundaries at school and home early on. FOSB’s PIE Committee and select Salmon Bay K-8 staff invite our community to join us for a viewing and post-discussion of Screenagers - the original version focused on middle- and high-schoolers on November 6, and the newest elementary version on November 13 in the cafetorium. FOSB’s Racial Equity fund is intended to align with our commitment to anti-racism work. Funds are available for programming to address the needs of those most directly impacted by racial injustices at Salmon Bay School. Each is estimated to be between $250-2000. Our extended fall proposal deadline is October 31st. Please submit a proposal (1-page max) to Cynthia for how you would use the funds. Proposals can include trainings, community events, talks, etc. Proposals will be evaluated by the Racial Equity Fund Committee, with their funding recommendations presented to the community at the November 21st FOSB Board meeting. Additional rounds of funding will take place throughout the year. Please reach out to Racial Equity Fund Chair Cynthia Anderson (parent of 4th and 7th graders) with questions.

Save the Date: Fall Direct Giving Drive Starts Friday, November 1-22

FOSB’s Fall Direct Giving Drive is slated for November 1-22. The goal is to raise $84K to fully fund FOSB-supported school-related expenses this year. The money supports scholarships, camps and after-school-programs, teacher appreciation activities, stipends for the school nurse and volunteer coordinator, school advocacy efforts, parent information exchange programs, racial equity efforts, and community building initiatives, among others. Individual donations and corporate matching of any size is welcome. Keep an eye out in future newsletters, emails, and backpacks for more information on ways to give. Have questions, suggestions, or time to help? Contact Direct Giving Co-Chair, Liila Woods. “Let’s make this the best year yet!”

Native Youth Reading Challenge

Jenny Miller (Native American Family Support Worker) and Mai Takahashi (Childrens Service Librarian) recently shared an amazing opportunity for our Native Students at Salmon Bay. They are hoping to collaborate with neighborhood schools to participate in the Daybreak Star field trip on October 18.

Elementary students will spend about two hours at Daybreak Star, paired with high school students for near-peer mentorship. To ensure students are excused from school and able to participate, please reach out to Lara Cowles for:

  • Field trip permission forms.
  • Transportation arrangements or paperwork.
  • Any other planning or coordination needs

Background:

Native educators from various districts and NPOs in Western Washington have come together to form a non-profit called the United Indians of All Tribes Educators Consortium (UIATEC), with support from the United Indians of All Tribes Foundation (UIATF). UIATEC's goal is to empower Native youth across Western Washington and provide them with cultural exposure. Through this initiative, high school students will have the opportunity to develop leadership skills by planning and hosting events and leadership training.

The Reading Program:

We’re launching a Native Youth Reading Challenge. It will be similar to the Global Reading Challenge but with a cooperative reading log format. Our aim is to earn 1 million points together by reading books, attending library programs, and participating in community gatherings featuring books by Native authors. The challenge is modeled after the Cleveland Reads Program. We’ve also acquired the Beanstalk app for tracking reading progress.

We’ll kick off the challenge with an event at Daybreak Star in Seattle on October 18, where books will be distributed. Participants can then start logging their reading either digitally through the app or on physical paper. The program will keep going and we’ll collect and update the total minutes read each month and celebrate our progress with another event in March as a final of this program .

Reading lists at SPL (similar list will be available at KCLS, Sno-Isle, Pierce, and other library systems via Beanstalk App):

Please contact Mai Takahashi (Children's Service Librarian) with any questions about the program. Contact Lara Cowles if your child would like to participate.

What's in the Lobby?

Please limit to one costume per kiddo. Also, help us keep the costumes tidy as you look through them.

Fall Costume Exchange Now through Friday, November 1st.

Thank you to all the families who donated gently used costumes to our drive! All costumes are currently hanging on clothing racks in the front lobby. Costumes are available to take home now! Unclaimed items will be offered to the school’s theater department (for upcoming performances), our K/1 classrooms (for dress-up) and community charities, so nothing goes to waste. Looking forward to the school costume parade at the end of October!

Costume donations are still accepted - please hang them on the racks in the lobby.

Lost & Found

Please remember to have your kids check the lost & found periodically - there's already a full rack, and more comes in daily!

PLEASE NOTE: There is a lot of clothing out on the playground. Once it gets wet from the rain we can’t bring it in until it is dry (due to mold), which can be tricky this time of year.

Winter Clothing Drive Now through Wednesday, November 20

Drop-off anytime in the school front lobby

Do you have gently used winter clothing and outerwear that your family has outgrown? Drop them anytime in the designated box in the front lobby. Looking for gently used attire for you and your kids this season? Join us at our first annual Friendsgiving potluck and clothing drive on Wednesday, November 20. The collection of clothing will be made available during this event, to be taken for free or accompanied by a gift of any value to the FOSB Direct Giving Drive to support school-related activities this year. Unclaimed items will be kept for our community and/or donated to a local charity. Have questions, suggestions, or time to help? Contact Direct Giving Co-Chair, Chase Treisman.

Cleat Exchange Now through Friday, October 18.

Drop-off anytime in the school front lobby

Soccer season is upon us! Have your kids outgrown their soccer cleats or shin guards? Do you need a new pair that fits? Drop your gently used kicks and/or grab a pair anytime in the front lobby.
