Hello Salmon Bay Families!
|
We have had another fantastic week. Our kindergarteners went to Oxbow farms on Tuesday and had a wonderful time. I was listening to students share what their favorite part was, one student said rolling down the hill, with a big smile. It sounds like it was a great adventure.
A Gaga Ball Pit was installed on the playground this week and it’s been a hit with students! We are all learning the rules and coming to agreements about them. Here is a link to a video that teachers are showing in their classrooms so that we are all on the same page. There are still some questions about the last 2-3 people in the pit and what our rule will be, because the video says one thing, but we have been allowing those last few players to complete the game instead of having a count down. Take a look here.
Lastly on the gaga pit: we gave all teacher the list of rules that are posted and will come to agreement about the number of players at a time. We want this to be a fun experience for all and thus far students are really jazzed.
Traffic on 18th street
I just want to highlight the need for parents to work together and with us to manage the traffic on the 18th street side at the end of the day. We have cars double parked, which is not safe or legal and now the neighbors are complaining.
Earlier this year we put up the street-smart barriers and it seemed to be working, however some of our community members did not agree so we took them down. I have asked FOSB to canvas our community for solutions. One solution is to ask parents who live near the school to walk to pick up their students if possible. Another solution is to ask middle school parents that need to drive to pick up their students to park a couple of blocks away from the school and have your middle schooler meet you down the street. These are all just suggestions, if you have a better solution, please reach out to the FOSB chairs Julie and Shannon with your ideas. We all want you to be able to pick your students up safely and to be considerate of the larger community and neighbors.
In partnership,
Barbara Dixon

Enrichment Fees for K-5 Families:
Be on the lookout for letters to families regarding 2024/2025 Enrichment Fees. During the school year, your child will participate in field trips, artist-in-residence programs, or other special class projects. Instead of asking for payment each time one of these activities takes place, we ask parents to pay one fee at the beginning of the school year.
This fee is called the Enrichment Fee (or field trip fee). It allows our teachers the opportunity to choose the programs, projects and events that can best enhance their curriculum and excite their class. The fee this year will be $100 per student; scholarship funds will be available.
| | |
|
Enrichment Fees for Middle School Families:
At the middle school level, we operate with a pay-as-you-go model for our outdoor and experiential learning opportunities. To better help families plan, we wanted to provide you all with a list of a few upcoming approximate fees:
1. Spring Enrichment Program Fee: approx.$250 due in late February/early March
-This fee allows us to take all our middle schools students on adventures across this city in March. More information to come later this fall.
2. 7th and 8th Grade Camps: approx. $400 in late May/early June
-This fee allows us to take all our 7/8 students to overnight camp in early June
| | |
|
School Pictures:
Please remember you can order student portraits here: 2024-25 Salmon Bay K-8 Picture Day 10/15 (enter your email address and select your package; separate orders are required for each student, including siblings). Print preorders will be shipped to the school in approximately three weeks after picture day.
If your student missed Picture Day, re-takes will be held 11/19/24.
| | | |
Notes From the Nurse:
A few important reminders:
- Please keep your child home if they are sick. Also, please do not give them sickness medication prior to school, as this medication will wear off while at school and symptoms will return
- Your child CANNOT self-carry medication (even over-the counter medication) unless approved by me. Your child cannot TAKE medication (even over-the-counter medication) at school without the proper forms in place
-
Here is a link for COVID/Respiratory Illness guidelines.
- Children can easily catch lice through contacts with friends at school, home and in the community. Finding lice early makes it easier to get rid of them. Doing regular head checks on your children is your best defense!
I am at Salmon Bay every Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Please reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns, or if I can be of further assistance. I look forward to partnering with you and your child!

Attendance:
Morning Arrival/Absence:
The school day begins at 8:55am for K-8th grade. Students should be in their classroom ready to begin work when the school day begins. If your student arrives after 8:55 they will need to stop by the office to sign in and get a tardy slip.
To report your child absent, please email us at salmonbay.attendance@seattleschools.org or call us at 206-252-1728. When reporting your child absent, please include first and last name and the nature of your student’s absence.
Multiple Day Planned Absence:
If your student is going to miss more than two school days, please fill out the Planned of Absence Form and submit this form to the main office at least one week in advance of the absence. Planned absences can be excused for medical appointments, religious or other one-time events. Family vacations or family trips during regular school days are not excused.
Riding home on the Bus with a friend:
If your student is planning to ride home with another student who is assigned to a bus route, a temporary transportation pass (Yellow Card) must be obtained through our school office. We do require a signed note/phone call or email from a parent/guardian giving permission for their student to ride the bus with a friend, please include route number and full names of students. Bus pass request must be made at least one hour prior to dismissal so please plan ahead of time!
Picking up students for Appointments:
If you are picking up a student for an appointment, please call the main office 5-10
minutes before your arrival so we can call your student down for pick-up. It gets quite
busy, and a call serves as a great reminder to us and helps us keep everything moving
on time.
If you have any questions regarding attendance please contact our Attendance coordinator, Ileana De Leon.
| | | |
Crossing Guard Needed:
We are still hoping to find a Crossing Guard. This is a paid hourly position. Please contact Principal Dixon if you are interested. Also, feel free to share the news with any community members who might be interested.

Wed, November 6th & 13th 6-8pm - Screenagers, Salmon Bay Cafetorium
We live in a digital world where technological advancement and their integration in our lives grows deeper and faster each day. The nation, and indeed the world, is rallying around the growing recognition that social media and excessive screen time are contributing to serious mental health concerns among our youth. To address this, we must focus on prevention by learning the latest research, establishing good habits, and setting boundaries at school and home early on.
FOSB’s PIE Committee and select Salmon Bay K-8 staff invite our community to join us for a viewing and post-discussion of Screenagers - the original version focused on middle- and high-schoolers on Nov 6, and the newest elementary version on Nov 13 in the cafetorium. Free childcare and pizza available - RSVP here to guarantee we have sufficient staffing and food for your child(ren). Questions, suggestions, or time to help? Contact PIE Chair, Sylvia Loh.

Gaga Ball Game:
Kiddos have been enjoying the addition of Gaga Ball to their recesses! A little background, in case you were wondering: A Salmon Bay parent graciously donated his time and the lumber to build this “Pit of Joy” for our community. Approvals were officially given by the district earlier this week! One required piece was adding an ADA accessible door. Thank you to everyone who contributed! A second anonymous family donated $400, and $500 from FOSB’s Emerging Needs Fund means the current build has been fully paid for.
This game is new to some kids (and adults!). Here are some simple rules, a pretty good explanation of the social and emotional benefits of the game, and a video that you may find enjoyable.
Volunteer Support:
Additional recess support would be very useful to help steer the children towards good decisions. Here’s what that might look like. If you’re available, please contact Volunteer Coordinator Lara Cowles to volunteer some time on the playground. Thank you for considering!
10:00-10:15 Grade K-2
10:55-11:10 Grade 3-5
11:25-12:10 Grade K-2
12:10-12:40 Middle School
(Wednesday, 1:00-1:20 Grade 3-5)
1:35-1:55 Elementary Grades
1:55-2:15 Elementary Grades
A few identified needs:
A couple of balls were provided, but as these have a tendency to disappear, the school would be grateful for a few more, along with a mesh bag for storage. Also, We are aware that there have been a number of students scraping their knuckles on the asphalt while playing. We’re figuring out if installing rubber mats is a possibility, at what cost, and in what timeframe. Stay tuned!
Finally, related, please contact Principal Dixon if you have any hopes/ideas for additional playground or school improvements. Contact FOSB chairs Julie and Shannon if you have questions about accessing FOSB’s Emerging Needs Funds for any school related project or idea.

Middle School Ski Bus is Happening!
Hi Salmon Bay Middle School Parents!
My name is Taylor Dos Santos and I am a parent of 3 kids that attend Salmon Bay. I am volunteering as the Program Coordinator to get ski bus up and running again here at Salmon Bay!
I am excited to announce that we are partnering with Mohan Skiing and Boarding School to provide a ski bus for Salmon Bay middle schoolers!
It is important to note that this ski bus is not run through Seattle Public Schools/Salmon Bay K-8. SPS no longer allows the ski bus to happen during school hours. We know many of the kids and parents were sad to hear that ski bus went away last year, but we are pleased to offer a new program for this winter!
What is it?
A six week ski/board bus to Snoqualmie.
There are three options:
1. Ski lessons and transportation
Cost: $740*^
2. Board lessons and transportation
Cost:$740*^
3. Transportation only
Cost: $475*^
* Lift tickets and equipment are not included in the cost of lessons/transportation. All students must have their own lift ticket (a season pass or a daily lift ticket). Students without a lift ticket will not be allowed onto the bus as they would be unable to ski. Equipment is also not included—you can rent equipment for your child for the season.
^ Mohan does provide scholarships. Please visit this link to apply.
When is it?
Fridays after school. The buses will pick up from Salmon Bay at 4pm and arrive back between 11-11:30pm. Dates:
January 10
January 17
January 24
January 31
February 7
February 21
When you go to register, you will notice that for the Transportation only students, it only has Waitlist spots. Mohan wants to be sure that students who need/want lessons are able to register before children who only want transportation. It is still important to register now for transportation only, as the waitlist will be processed on a First Come/First Serve basis. We will leave the lessons and transportation up for one week before we begin processing the waitlist.
For more information and to register, click here.
Please read the policies outlined by Mohan! They will not provide refunds after November 29th. Children can be dismissed from the program for not following program rules/inappropriate behavior. Refunds will not be given to children who are dismissed from the program.
Parent Volunteer Need:
We need parent volunteers to make this program run smoothly! We believe we will need at least 3 parent volunteers (plus me!) to chaperone the buses each week (this number can change based on how many students sign up) Additionally, we need 2 emergency drivers, 1 male and 1 female each week. The emergency drivers can drive in the same car or separately.
Volunteers must sign up on the Mohan website and have a background check. Mohan has created a step by step document that shows volunteers how to apply. Find it attached here.
For more information on volunteers and to register as a volunteer please visit this link.

Fall Direct Giving Drive Starts Friday, November 1-22
FOSB’s Fall Direct Giving Drive is slated for November 1-22. The goal is to raise $84,000 to fully fund FOSB-supported school-related expenses this year. The money supports scholarships, camps and after-school-programs, teacher appreciation activities, stipends for the school nurse and volunteer coordinator, school advocacy efforts, parent information exchange programs, racial equity efforts, community building initiatives, among others. Individual donations and corporate matching of any size is welcome. Keep an eye out in future newsletters, emails, and backpacks for more information on ways to give. Questions, suggestions, or time to help? Contact Co-Chair, Liila Woods. “Let’s make this the best year yet!”
| | | |
Please limit to one costume per kiddo. Also, help us keep the costumes tidy as you look through them.
|
Fall Costume Exchange Now through Friday, November 1st.
Thank you to all the families who donated gently used costumes to our drive! All costumes are currently hanging on clothing racks in the front lobby. Costumes are available to take home now! Unclaimed items will be offered to the school’s theater department (for upcoming performances), our K/1 classrooms (for dress-up) and community charities, so nothing goes to waste. Looking forward to the school costume parade at the end of October!
Costume donations are still accepted - please hang them on the racks in the lobby.
| | | |
|
Seasonal Clothing Exchange through Wednesday, November 20
Drop-off anytime in the school front lobby
Do you have gently used clothing and outerwear that your family has outgrown? Drop items anytime in the designated box located in the school’s front lobby. Looking for gently used attire for you and your kids this season? Join us at our first annual Friendsgiving potluck and clothing drive on Wednesday, Nov 20 in the cafetorium. The collection of clothing will be made available during this event, to be taken for free or accompanied by a gift of any value to the FOSB Direct Giving Drive to fund FOSB-supported school-related expenses this year. Unclaimed items will be kept for our community and/or donated to a local charity. Volunteer here to help the event run smoothly! Questions, suggestions, or time to help? Contact Co-Chair, Chase Treisman.

Lost & Found
Please remember to have your kids check the lost & found periodically - there's already a full rack, and more comes in daily!
| |
PLEASE NOTE: There is a lot of clothing out on the playground. Once it gets wet from the rain we can’t bring it in until it is dry (due to mold), which can be tricky this time of year.
