Weekly Newsletter 11/08/24

Hello Salmon Bay Families!

Again, I want to acknowledge and honor the range of feelings many of us may be experiencing at this time in our country. I am deeply grateful to our entire community, staff, families, and students for always showing up for each other in the best way we can. You are the heart of who we are, and it is through our actions that we shape who we want to be as we navigate these times. Let us continue to come together as a community focusing on the things within our control and the positive impact, we can have within our community.

Today Mark, with the help of others, put together a very special Friday Sing in honor of Veterans Day (Monday November 11th). Thank you, Mark, it was heartfelt!

This veteran's day holds special significance as we pause to honor the brave individuals who gave their lives in service to protect the freedoms we hold dear. Their sacrifices have shaped the very fabric of our country and today we reflect on the courage, dedication and selflessness of those who served. We are deeply grateful for their sacrifices and the freedoms we often take for granted. It is through their commitment to our nation that we can enjoy the rights and opportunities we have. As we observe this day let us also remember the ongoing sacrifices of veterans and their families and renew our commitment to support them in meaningful ways.

Monday there is no school, so please take a moment to honor our Veterans in some way special.

In gratitude and partnership,

Principal Dixon

Direct Giving:

FOSB Fall Direct Giving is underway!

Friends of Salmon Bay (FOSB) is the nonprofit parent-teacher organization of Salmon Bay K-8. Through FOSB, our families and staff work together to build and sustain the people, programs, and activities that contribute to our unique and thriving school. Your generous donation of time and resources help us close the gap between the resources the district provides and what is needed for our students and entire community.

Please consider donating here today!

We are currently at almost 25% of our goal: Help us raise $84,000 by Nov 22 to fully fund the gap for this 2024-2025 school year!

Donations are tax-deductible. Corporate contributions are welcome. We recognize that families can contribute at different levels - please know that anything helps! Everything is voluntary, and everything is appreciated. Even a $5 donation brings us closer to our overall goal. Every dollar helps, and every donation is appreciated!

Did you know that …

  • You are the largest volunteer base in the entire district!
  • 77% of your contribution funds Salmon Bay school staff, supplies, programs, and scholarships
  • 23% of your contribution funds volunteer-led committee efforts that support our entire school community
  • See the breakdown of your contributions here.

Thank you for being part of our amazing community and supporting Salmon Bay!

Lost & Found

The lost & found has recently been sorted - thank you! Please be sure to grab something if you recognize it, and/or send your kiddos to look. Items with name tags have been pulled out, and office aides will be reconnecting them with students. Also, don't forget to check the playground!

Please Note: all items must be claimed by 11/15. Some items will be included in the first annual Friendsgiving clothing swap, hosted by FOSB on 11/20; remaining unclaimed items will be donated to various charities.

An album of photos can be found here. The photos are also in the Salmon Bay Community Facebook Group. These are all the items currently in lost & found (as of Tuesday morning).

After School Programming Survey

Please take FOSB’s After School Program Caretaker Survey! Help shape the future of after-school programs at Salmon Bay. Your feedback will help us create an inclusive and supportive environment for all students. Currently, classes are offered through Grade 6 due to low enrollment by middle school children. Caretaker input is also needed to see if we should expand after-school programs for middle schoolers! Survey is open through the end of November.

Picture Retakes

If you missed picture day or would simply like a retake the time is almost near.

November 19th is Picture Retake Day. Please have your student bring with them the original to return to Yuen Lui to receive your retake at no cost. Yuen Lui will not be calling classes down individually, but we will be making an all call for students to take pictures. You may email Tejara (Tae) if you would like to ensure your students name is on the list for retakes that’ll be given to Yuen Lui.

Did you miss pre-orders for the October 15th Picture Day but would still like to order? Families can still purchase pictures online! Below is the link to share. Each gallery is password protected by an online code. Online codes are SPS student ID numbers and orders are now shipped to homes.

Salmon Bay K-8 (view and order) here.

Missed picture day all together? Or perhaps, you would like a TAKE 2? Picture Retake day will be Tuesday, November 19th.

For families who have ordered photos, they should be arriving home with your student soon!

Ongoing Announcements:

Parents, to keep all students safe, and to avoid conflicts with food allergies, we have a no food or drink sharing policy at Salmon Bay.

This has been announced to students during lunch, but some still insist on sharing, or asking for the food/drink of table mates. Your help with discussing this with your child is appreciated.

We are still hoping to find a Crossing Guard. This is a paid hourly position. Please contact Principal Dixon if you are interested. Also, feel free to share the news with any community members who might be interested.

Attendance:

Morning Arrival/Absence:

The school day begins at 8:55am for K-8th grade. Students should be in their classroom ready to begin work when the school day begins. If your student arrives after 8:55 they will need to stop by the office to sign in and get a tardy slip.

To report your child absent, please email us at salmonbay.attendance@seattleschools.org or call us at 206-252-1728. When reporting your child absent, please include first and last name and the nature of your student’s absence.

Multiple Day Planned Absence:

If your student is going to miss more than two school days, please fill out the Planned of Absence Form and submit this form to the main office at least one week in advance of the absence. Planned absences can be excused for medical appointments, religious or other one-time events. Family vacations or family trips during regular school days are unexcused.

Riding home on the Bus with a friend:

If your student is planning to ride home with another student who is assigned to a bus route, a temporary transportation pass (Yellow Card) must be obtained through our school office. We do require a signed note/phone call or email from a parent/guardian giving permission for their student to ride the bus with a friend, please include route number and full names of students. Bus pass request must be made at least one hour prior to dismissal so please plan ahead of time!

Picking up students for Appointments:

If you are picking up a student for an appointment, please call the main office 5-10

minutes before your arrival so we can call your student down for pick-up. It gets quite

busy, and a call serves as a great reminder to us and helps us keep everything moving

on time.

If you have any questions regarding attendance please contact our Attendance coordinator, Ileana De Leon.

Notes From the Nurse:

A few important reminders:

  • Please keep your child home if they are sick. Also, please do not give them sickness medication prior to school, as this medication will wear off while at school and symptoms will return
  • Your child CANNOT self-carry medication (even over-the counter medication) unless approved by me. Your child cannot TAKE medication (even over-the-counter medication) at school without the proper forms in place
  • Here is a link for COVID/Respiratory Illness guidelines.
  • Children can easily catch lice through contacts with friends at school, home and in the community. Finding lice early makes it easier to get rid of them. Doing regular head checks on your children is your best defense!

I am at Salmon Bay every Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Please reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns, or if I can be of further assistance. I look forward to partnering with you and your child!
