Hello Salmon Bay Families! | |
|
It has been a short and busy week, I hope you all had the chance to honor, thank and remember a veteran.
Middle school started the week with an assembly honoring Veterans Day by asking some important questions like; “What is a Veteran” and “What is Veterans Day?” and explaining to students that Veterans Day was originally known as Armistice Day, celebrated on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month commemorating the end of WWI. Then in 1938 it became a holiday to honor all who fought in WWI. In 1954, after the Korean War and WWII, the holiday was officially changed to “Veterans Day” to honor all Veterans.
During the Elementary assembly last Friday, we learned that there is an official day honoring Women Veterans, not all states recognize this day, but they should. This day was chosen in recognition of the anniversary of the 1948 Women’s Armed Services Act Signing, 2024 is the 76th anniversary.
It was also great to see the family photos of veterans that students and staff shared, like the Don Burger, beloved grandpa of Sophia Elias, Mike Heltzel, Theo Drakes Uncle and James Nartker, Theo Drakes Grandpa. And Evie Taylor our Assistant principal shared a photo of her dad Early Taylor, now 99 and still driving around! It is such an honor to remember heroes such as our veterans!
Also, this week our Kindergarten and First Grade students went to the Seattle Children’s Theater and enjoyed a one woman show called “Havana Hop” a children’s tale of culture and confidence!
If you are in the building this week, check out the writing and artwork outside Talia’s room titled “A Good Leader Would…” by our amazing future leaders of America!
Parent Teacher Conferences are starting next week: please sign up with your child's teacher, if you have not already.
Have a great weekend!

From The Social Work Team:
You may have seen some new faces around Salmon Bay lately; we have two new social work interns! Together, we are hoping to expand our reach and support more students!
As a team or three, we will be able to service the community a bit more. As school social workers, our job is to help create a safe environment for all students and support their social and emotional learning and well-being. Your child is our main priority, but supporting them may also include supporting them at home, at school, or in the greater community. This will look like three main services: one-on-one check-ins, group or lunch bunch check-ins, and family/community support.
• One-on-one check-ins serve as a brief opportunity for students to be heard and supported and possibly practice some social-emotional skills.
• Our groups vary on topic, such as emotions or planting a friendship garden. It allows students to work together to grow holistically.
• Lunch bunch is a lowkey opportunity for students and their friends to eat lunch in our office, talk, and play games with the goals of forming friendships with peers and building relationships with trusted adults on our social work team.
We try our best to schedule these in a way that does not interfere with core instruction!
In terms of community resources outside of the school, we have amazing partners in the community that provide us with food bags for our families. Also, we can provide mental health resources for a more in depth emotional support outside of school. We are happy to look for resources in the community for any area of life. We want to support your child by supporting them at school, at home, and in the community! Let us know if you're interested!
We are so excited to continue this school year! It is okay to ask for help and that we are better when we work together to best support each other!
Allie Ash, Kate Barrett, and Ashley Pilling

Help us fully fund this school year!
We’re halfway there, but still need to raise another $42,000
This money closes the gap between what the district provides and what we need to sustain the staff, programs, and resources that make Salmon Bay K-8 great! If the majority of our families donate something, even a few dollars, we will reach the goal in no time!
Many of the essential and unique aspects of our school…
- Volunteer coordinator, nurse, art teacher, drama instructor
- Kindergarten jumpstart and fall connections
- Spring Enrichment Program (SEP)
- Field trips and camps for every grade
- After-school programs, team sports, and theater
- Scholarships to enable equitable participation
- Racial equity initiative funding
- Parent education resources
- All-school and grade-specific community building
- (Pizza on the Playground, Friendsgiving, Lantern Festival, Pi Night, Multicultural Night)
- Free yearbooks for all students
- And so much more!
…would not be possible without your support!
Donate here today!

Enjoy Screenagers at home through Fri, Nov 29
Thank you FOSB Parent-Information Exchange (PIE), Rob Bright (middle school counselor), Allie Ash (social worker), and school staff for bringing Screenagers to our community!
Upper elementary and middle school classrooms held abbreviated viewings and discussions prior to the community screening and conversation. While Screenagers highlighted the key challenges and strategies around screen, technology, and social media use at home and school, it also sparked the beginning of conversations, perspective sharing, and strategy-making among our community of staff, caregivers, and children.
If you weren’t able to join us for the screenings or want a second go, you can register here to watch Screenagers at home anytime through Fri, Nov 29. We encourage our community to keep having open dialogues with one another to find what healthy boundaries concerning screen use and digital citizenship mean for each of us.
In the words of Jonathan Haidt, author of the Anxious Generation:
It is often hard for one person, one family, or one school to swim against the tide of ever-increasing screen time, but if we act together, we can turn the tide… rolling back phone-based childhood and helping our children regain more independence in the real world.
To this end, we will be introducing the Let Grow Experience, after school play program, and guest speaker event with founder Lenore Skenazy to our school community after winter break. Stay tuned!

News From the Library:
Another busy week in the library! Sixth graders came with Katie's social studies classes to learn how to use the district's databases. The students also learned about research vs searching and websites vs databases. I look forward to seeing their Ancient Egypt projects.
In addition, we are getting closer to having the new furniture in the library. We have picked the color scheme and hope have it all in place by January. I will need help with moving furniture and books during that time. I will be asking for volunteers. Stay tuned!
Just a heads up, I will be out most of December. I am getting hip replacement surgery soon and will be recovering. We have a former Salmon Bay librarian to cover for me during this time, (Linda Illman). Reach out with questions.
Kindly,
Corinna Wright

Attendance:
Morning Arrival/Absence:
The school day begins at 8:55am for K-8th grade. Students should be in their classroom ready to begin work when the school day begins. If your student arrives after 8:55 they will need to stop by the office to sign in and get a tardy slip.
To report your child absent, please email us at salmonbay.attendance@seattleschools.org or call us at 206-252-1728. When reporting your child absent, please include first and last name and the nature of your student’s absence.
Multiple Day Planned Absence:
If your student is going to miss more than two school days, please fill out the Planned of Absence Form and submit this form to the main office at least one week in advance of the absence. Planned absences can be excused for medical appointments, religious or other one-time events. Family vacations or family trips during regular school days are unexcused.
Riding home on the Bus with a friend:
If your student is planning to ride home with another student who is assigned to a bus route, a temporary transportation pass (Yellow Card) must be obtained through our school office. We do require a signed note/phone call or email from a parent/guardian giving permission for their student to ride the bus with a friend, please include route number and full names of students. Bus pass request must be made at least one hour prior to dismissal so please plan ahead of time!
Picking up students for Appointments:
If you are picking up a student for an appointment, please call the main office 5-10
minutes before your arrival so we can call your student down for pick-up. It gets quite
busy, and a call serves as a great reminder to us and helps us keep everything moving
on time.
If you have any questions regarding attendance please contact our Attendance coordinator, Ileana De Leon.

Notes From the Nurse:
Head Lice:
Children can easily catch lice through contacts with friends at school, home and in the community. Finding lice early makes it easier to get rid of them. Doing regular head checks on your children is your
best defense!
Basic Lice Facts:
Who gets lice? Anyone!! Frequent, regular shampooing does not prevent lice. Younger children seem to get lice more frequently because of more close contact with others. Animals do not carry or contract head lice.
How do you get lice? Lice can walk, but they do not fly or hop. They travel from person to person directly (two heads touching) or are transferred via personal items (combs, brushes, hats, pillowcases…)
Facts about Lice: The adult louse is a wingless insect less than 1/8” long and is a pale brownish-gray. Lice do not carry disease. They bite the scalp causing itching. They move quickly and avoid light so they are often difficult to see.
Facts about Nits: The female louse lays 3-6 eggs per day and may live up to 30 days. The nits (egg sacs) of lice are cemented to human hair with “nature’s superglue.” The nits appear as small, silvery oval-shaped specks that look like dandruff. But they are difficult to remove! The nits hatch in about 7 – 10 days.
-
Lice are not a health hazard and do not spread diseases. However, they are annoying, itchy and frustrating!
-
Indications of a lice infestation include – itching of the scalp, a tickling feeling in the hair, visible live lice or nits attached to hair, sores or scratches on the head, irritability or trouble sleeping.
- Almost all cases of lice are spread through direct head-to-head contact. Lice cannot jump or fly to another person's hair. While it is possible to spread lice while sharing hats or brushes, most lice are spread during sleepovers and bed-sharing.
-
Nits (lice eggs) are tiny, oval and tan (not hatched) or white (hatched) specks that are glued to the hair shaft. Nits hatch into lice in about 1 week. Off the scalp, nits can't survive over 1 week.
-
Lice are approximately 1/16-inch (2 mm) long bugs – about the size of a sesame seed. They move quickly and are difficult to find. Adult lice can typically survive 3-4 weeks on the scalp, but only 24-48 hours off the head. The lice feed on blood from the scalp.
A few important reminders:
- Please keep your child home if they are sick. Also, please do not give them sickness medication prior to school, as this medication will wear off while at school and symptoms will return
- Your child CANNOT self-carry medication (even over-the counter medication) unless approved by me. Your child cannot TAKE medication (even over-the-counter medication) at school without the proper forms in place
-
Here is a link for COVID/Respiratory Illness guidelines.
- Children can easily catch lice through contacts with friends at school, home and in the community. Finding lice early makes it easier to get rid of them. Doing regular head checks on your children is your best defense!
I am at Salmon Bay every Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Please reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns, or if I can be of further assistance. I look forward to partnering with you and your child!
