Hello Salmon Bay Families,
This week, I was back in the Panther Passage, checking in with Kindergarten families during the drop-off time. “Are you Prince Neil?” I assured them that I wasn’t, but I was honored, and I asked them if they knew any princes or princesses. “Oh, lots of them, but mostly in movies and books.” I love the chance to enter the imaginative world of children through literature and play.
Another place I find an entry point for entering that world is through nature experiences. Last night for Earth Day, I read The Sense of Wonder by Rachel Carson with my children and shared the wonderful nature pictures with them and we talked about memories of catching frogs and finding frost making the world sparkle. I hope you have the chance to enjoy some nature this weekend with your family – be it a thunderstorm, bird songs, flowers blooming, or the lapping of water in a pond or the ocean.
I’m glad to be on this amazing planet with each of you!
Happy Earth Day Week,
Neil

Thank you to everyone who joined us for Elementary Poetry Night this past Tuesday. We loved sharing favorite poems and listening to your original writings!

Middle School students transitioned to new schedules this week. Staff were also excited to welcome some students back to the building. You can't see it behind his mask, but art teacher Trevor has a huge smile on his face as he welcomes students into the art room! !

New Faces at Salmon Bay
We are excited to introduce these four new staff members to our community.
|
Maria Ortega
Maria is a mother of nine children, six boys and 3 girls. She is from California but moved to the Seattle area in 2008 to start a new life. When she originally moved here, she didn't have any family in the area. She does now! She has 25 grandchildren with whom she loves to spend time. She likes to go camping every summer with her family and enjoys exploring this beautiful state. Maria joined SPS in 2019 and loves her job. She is part of our Salmon Bay custodial team, working to keep our students healthy and safe.

Christy Malcom
Hello, Salmon Bay! I’m excited to be filling in for Katie for the remainder of the year in World Cultures. I’ve been a professional educator ever since graduating in 2001 from Georgia State University with my Bachelor’s in Early Childhood in Education, apart from my maternal leave years. I kicked off my career as an international school teacher in Seoul, South Korea where I taught 5th graders for several years. I’ve also taught at various other grade levels, including here in my home state of Washington. I’ve been teaching for Seattle Public Schools for 4 years. I’m a bit of a mixed-breed, having lived on both the East and the West Coasts (but I do prefer my original roots here in the PNW!). When I’m not teaching students, you’ll find me loitering in bookshops, drinking coffee, playing outdoors, listening to music and podcasts, and just being with my three kids and my husband in the community of Ballard where we love to live.

Munya Souaiaia
Munya grew up in Seattle and after attending college in New York City and living two years in France, she returned home and the rest is history. She enjoys cooking, running, playing the flute and piano, travel, and languages. She's also a lifelong Mariners fan, against her better judgment. (Team Edddd-gar forever.) Education has been a constant theme underlying her career, whether she has been in front of the classroom, or providing behind-the-scenes support in the various roles she's held. She's also TESOL-certified and has experience teaching English to children of all ages as well as adults. Munya is currently providing hourly support and supervision. She's excited to be a part of the Salmon Bay community and looks forward to meeting you all!

Peter Henry
Peter grew up in New York City, and after college he moved to the Seattle area. Every time he looks out and sees the mountains, he knows he made the right move. He lives in Edmonds with his wife, Ginny, housemate, Lori, and feline companions Simon and Spoooky. He loves going on field trips to look at rocks, and rides his bike more than he drives. He also loves teaching science and, especially, math, so he's found his niche at Salmon Bay providing small group math support and teaching with Brittaney for the rest of the school year!

Staff Appreciation Week Plans
We will celebrate staff appreciation the first week in May. And while we can't host a potluck lunch or many of the appreciation activities typical of past years, we can host an outdoor "pop up" Salmon Bay greenhouse and provide snacks to our staff.
It's become tradition to end staff appreciation week by creating a greenhouse where each staff member can select a plant as a lasting token of appreciation from our community. The plants are always a highlight and staff love "shopping" for their gift.
Here's how you can participate:
-
If you are able to donate a plant(s), please sign up here. This list helps us track donations and ensure we have enough plants so every staff member can select one.
.
- Drop off your potted plant at our outdoor greenhouse on the morning of Thursday, May 6th by noon.
In addition to the Salmon Bay Greenhouse, FOSB will be stocking our staff lounge with a variety of snacks and drinks. If you'd like to contribute toward staff snacks, see our request list here.
We'll also send a card to all staff members.
Question? Please email Jodi, Volunteer Coordinator.

Middle School Ebook Resource
We have a new collection of ebooks for middle school students to access! They can be found in the Sora app, which can be accessed through Clever. Teacher Ben made this video demonstrating how to access and use Sora. (Note: you will need to be logged into an SPS account to view the video.) Sora is a great platform because it allows to students to easily look up word definitions, annotate text selections, and even export their annotations into a document. Sora seamlessly links with Libby, so students can read all the Seattle Public Library books on Sora as well.

Final Call for Yearbook Photos
We are working to complete our yearbook within the next couple weeks and could use your help!
Yearbook Portraits: Earlier this week, reminder emails were sent to all students without yearbook portraits. If you have not yet uploaded (or emailed Jodi) your yearbook portrait, please do so before Monday.
Additional Candid Photographs Needed:
We could use some additional photographs that highlight students in an outdoor setting. Have a photo from your yard, a park, a hike, spring break or playing a sport?

Food Support at Salmon Bay
Students are invited to pick up a lunch (and breakfast for p.m. cohorts) prior to leaving school each day. Meals are "grab-and-go" style and are to be consumed off campus.
Meals are free for any student (not just those who qualify for free/reduced meals). Families who do qualify are encourage to fill out free/ reduced meal paperwork because there are additional benefits that might be helpful.
Families are also encouraged to visit any of the SPS dedicated meal sites to pick up a variety of meals including hot entrees, fresh fruits and vegetables, frozen dinners provided by FareStart and weekend pantry bags. Adams Elementary and Whittier Elementary are two close meal sites, open between 10:45 am - 1:15 pm daily.
In addition, students can request a weekend food bag provided by the Ballard Food Bank. To arrange for a weekend food bag, please email Jodi Russell, Volunteer Coordinator.
