Hello Salmon Bay Families,

I hope you are doing well today and that perhaps you got outside a bit and enjoyed some of the sunshine.

This week our Building Leadership Team met to discuss the Salmon Bay Logo, and formally voted to launch a process to retire and replace our current logo. We hope to complete this process by the start of the 2021-22 school year, and will be sharing opportunities for community involvement and input – along with learning opportunities about Native arts and the harm of cultural appropriation.

By way of background, the Salmon Bay Logo was created by a former Salmon Bay Teacher in the early days of the two schools joining – the Cooperative Holistic School (COHO) and New Options Middle School (NOMS) – to become Salmon Bay K-8. The artist who created the logo is not indigenous, and has stopped working in this art form as he now recognizes that this can cause harm. We’ve spoken with the head of Native Education in Seattle Schools and also heard form indigenous members of our community that a new logo created by a Native Artist or a logo that isn’t in that Coastal Salish or Haida art style is an important shift to make to not continue to do harm.

The name Salmon Bay was chosen with connection to the place, and the logo had that intention behind it as well.  There had been a previous school named Salmon Bay – opened in 1901 by the Ballard School District and becoming part of Seattle a few years later. A connection to our current location is that school closed in 1932 and students from that school were moved to Monroe Jr High (our current school campus) in 1931!

Some of you may have seen the Burke’s Museum, The Waterlines Project (linked here).
Salmon Bay on this map of Coastal Salish Place names was known as a “Place to Spirit Journey”. I look forward to being on a journey with the community as we seek to continue to learn and grow together.

Thank you,

Neil

Roots of Empathy - 5th Grade
Roots of Empathy is in full swing in our 5th Grade classrooms. Each classroom has their own baby and the students are excited to get to meet them either this week or next. Through their interactions with the baby (and their adult), our 5th graders will learn about milestones, temperament, sleeping, nutrition, diapering, attachment, emotions, safety, and much more. Aleen Adams (a Salmon Bay parent) and Jenny Brooks are trained Roots of Empathy instructors and will each be teaching one of our 5th grade programs this year. Now, the best part… the babies!

Class Photo Day
Next Tuesday, December 15 we will be taking class pictures during Homeroom. We hope that everyone will turn on their camera and take a picture in Together Mode with their classmates.

Having light on you student faces really helps us see beautiful smiles, so face windows or lights rather than have them at your back!

We are working with Entourage Yearbooks to use a photo app for individual pictures. We will be asking students and families to submit these in January through the app which will help us roster and organize all the pictures coming in such that our yearbook team can lay out the pages.Stay tuned for more details after break!
Library News
We are pleased to announce that the Mini-Library in Panther Passage (AKA the alley) will now be open every Thursday evening (except for breaks/holidays) for browsing and checking out books!

Be sure to stop by next Thursday, December 17th between 3:30 - 5:30 pm to stock up on books for our Winter Break.

Excited to see you there,
Your Mini-Library Team

Hello Salmon Bay Families,

I hope you are well. Today I received an email from Committee for Children, the organization that developed Second Step. Second Step is a social emotional learning (SEL) curriculum that many schools use to teach students foundational skills such as self and social awareness, relationship skills and self-management. They have developed a series of videos that focus on winter well-being to help us all get through this dark time of the pandemic. This week, the first of eight weeks, is a video on self-compassion. Please enjoy it. Click here to view the video.

Let me know what you think about the information and how you are doing.

Take good care,

Rob

As always, you can reach out to me or Jenny B. if you need anything.
Lantern Festival Plans
It’s Lantern Festival time! We hope you will join us on Friday, December 18th at 8:30 am (during Friday Sing) for our morning Lantern Festival celebration.

Guest teaching artist, Mary K, will also lead an evening celebration at 6:30 pm on December 18th. Final details are still being worked out for this community gathering, so we will wait to share a link until next week. We will send an email invitation, with a link, to all families K-8.

Prepare for the Lantern Festival
Practice the Lantern Festival Songs
The first link below, featuring Guest Teaching Artist Mark K teaching the Nairobi Peace Song, is recorded on Stream (using Teams) so students will have to sign in with their school district accounts to view it.

The second link is to Building Bridges, which Teacher Marian sang this morning at Friday Sing. This video is from YouTube so students shouldn't need to sign in to view it.

Create a Lantern at Home
Teacher Trev (our art teacher) has graciously made some lantern designs that use easily-accessible materials around the home to make lanterns, with different options for different grade levels. Here are Trevor’s videos to help your child make a lantern:

If you need an electric tea light for your lantern, you can pick one up at Panther Passage (the alley).
We encourage your family to make a lantern(s) and participate in our celebrations on December 18th!

Nathan Hale HS Fall Play
Nathan Hale Theatre students made the most of this unprecedented time by creating an original theatrical masterpiece all on their own. Written, performed, and edited by students, this comedic murder mystery is fun for everyone. The show, set in a series of Zoom calls, weaves together the tale of a comedy troupe falling on hard times because of COVID, and the murderous drama that ensues. Family quarrels, secret identities, big reveals, and lives on the line are all main themes throughout the show, as well as falling in love and coping with loss.
