December
15: Class Photo Day
18: Lantern Festival
21-31: No School - Winter Break
Thank you!
Thank you for supporting our numerous giving opportunities- we know it’s a lot all at once. This community is generous and it will all come together. If you can give and haven’t done so already, please sign up early so we know where the gaps are that need to be filled. We appreciate all you are doing to support each other during the darkest month of a very tough year.

Who can help during non-school hours?
Our Salmon Bay administrators, counselors, teachers, and front office staff are here to help during school hours (and often outside of school hours). What should you do if there is an emergency involving other students outside of school hours?

Here are some resources you should all have:
  • SPS Safety and Security Department (staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year). They have access to student names, addresses, and phone numbers: 206-252-0707
  • King County 24-hour Crisis Line: 866-427-4747
  • TeenLink (staffed by trained teens): 866-833-6546/ 866-TEENLINK
  • Seattle Children’s Hospital ER: For physical or emotional crisis needing immediate intervention
  • To report child abuse or neglect: 800-609-8764
  • Loop one (or more) of us in through email and we will respond when possible

If you have a teen with their own phone, please help them add some of these numbers to their contacts. Also, please remind them the difference between telling and tattling. Telling (an adult) is for big deals and to get someone help. Tattling is for little deals and to get someone in trouble.

You matter. You are loved. We will get through this together. If you need help or support, please let Rob or me know.
Much love,
Jenny B

The Salmon Tank is up and running!
Teacher Brian returned to show Teacher Marian the ropes and got it all set up in the front lobby of school! We’ll get salmon eggs in January, and plan to have a webcam for students to observe the development of the salmon through April, when we will release them at Carkeek Park Imprint Pond.
Seen Online: This Week in 5th Grade
On Monday we started Making History, a program that simulates the creation of culture and civilization on a map resembling (but different from) earth. On Tuesday, we had the exciting opportunity to hear from three guest speakers coming from three different continents: Sonnet from Bangladesh, Annelotte from the Netherlands, and Marian’s husband Mauricio, who is originally from Bolivia and lives in Seattle. They joined us on Teams Tuesday morning to share about their native languages. We listened to their native languages and talked about different sounds (phonemes), language families, and how languages evolve over time.
K-2 Puppet Shows

A Message from Malik
Good afternoon everyone! I hope that you and your families are doing well in this interesting time of our lives. I’m writing this to inform the community that I’ve recently accepted an offer from Ballard High School as a Success Coordinator where I’ll continue to work closely with students and families. Today is my last day at Salmon Bay, and I would like to say THANK YOU! Thank you to the family that is the Salmon Bay Community.

In the past 5 years I’ve gone from working with the Boys and Girls Club to working as an IA inside of the School here at Salmon Bay. During that time I’ve experienced love, mentorship, kindness, failures, advances in field and a willingness to be able to listen to the forgotten. I am going to forever have gratitude towards what Salmon Bay has done for me. I will be back from time to time to stop by, say hello to everyone when I can. I have built relationships that I know will continue past my time here at Salmon Bay, and I cannot wait to continue those going forward.

Warmest regards and best wishes for the future,
Malik Prince A.K.A Mookie

Lantern Festival Plans
It’s Lantern Festival time! We hope you will join us on Friday, December 18th at 8:30 am (during Friday Sing) for our morning Lantern Festival celebration.

Guest teaching artist, Mary K, will also lead an evening celebration at 6:30 pm on December 18th. We will share additional details and links for the evening celebration in the newsletter next week.

Practice the Lantern Festival Songs
The first link below, featuring Guest Teaching Artist Mark K teaching the Nairobi Peace Song, is recorded on Stream (using Teams) so students will have to sign in with their school district accounts to view it.

The second link is to Building Bridges, which Teacher Marian sang this morning at Friday Sing. This video is from YouTube so students shouldn't need to sign in to view it.

Create a Lantern at Home
Trevor, SB art teacher, will be guiding all elementary students through simple lantern-making ideas that focus on developmentally appropriate processes using materials that can easily be found around the house or in the recycling bin. Materials to consider are: brown paper bags, plastic takeaway containers, construction paper, markers, glue stick, cracker/cereal/Kleenex boxes, cardboard scraps, a pencil and olive oil. A video that demonstrates all processes will be available at Trevor’s Youtube channel here: Teacher Trev - YouTube

We encourage your family to make a lantern(s) and participate in our celebrations on December 18th!
Friends of Salmon Bay (FOSB) is our school parent teacher organization. All parents and guardians are members.

We had a great discussion around International People’s with Disabilities Day sponsored by our Special Education Disability (SED) Committee. Our next meeting will be January 14th, a link will be available in the next bulletin. Nathan Hale HS Fall Play
Nathan Hale Theatre students made the most of this unprecedented time by creating an original theatrical masterpiece all on their own. Written, performed, and edited by students, this comedic murder mystery is fun for everyone. The show, set in a series of Zoom calls, weaves together the tale of a comedy troupe falling on hard times because of COVID, and the murderous drama that ensues. Family quarrels, secret identities, big reveals, and lives on the line are all main themes throughout the show, as well as falling in love and coping with loss.
